I hope it's not your clutch, but for your information the handbrake is operated using 4 brake shoes (2 in each rota)they open out inside the rotas and "bite" against the inner surface. If the car was driven with the handbrake on it will require re-adjusting, by removing the rear wheels and turning the adjuster wheel (no 14 in the drawing) through a hole in the disc will put things back as they were.Upload

Dan - good news is that the brakes are fine. Bad news is that you need a new clutch.

I'm not sure of the 550, but many rear disk brake cars have a separate little drum brake that is used as a parking brake. I recall my Alfa Milano had a complex caliper that engaged the main rear pads.

In either case, the car is probably fine. New pads contain volatile components that burn off the pads when they get heated. It sounds like your 550 has a separate brake system for parking and the pads got heated up and outgassed some of the volatile stuff you are smelling. The smell will go away, and the good news is that if you engage the parking brake again and drive a mile, it won't smell nearly as much the next time.

Ok, this will seem silly, but here it goes:

just let a friend take the 550 out for a quick spin (about a mile), but I wasn't in the car with him. When he came back, something was stinking - yup, the rear brakes. Dolt left the parking brake on.

So my question is - are the rear brakes cooked, or is the parking brake a separate 'part' with its own pad? The brakes felt fine, but I didn't stomp on them after. THe handbrake still engages / disengages easily. I drove back to my office (about 7 miles via freeway) and while the car felt fine, when I stopped it still smelled.

My question is - are the rears shot, or is the parking brake a separate unit with its own pad that might be pretty worn (easily fixed)?
