Malcolm, thanks very much for all the advise. I will see what is possible, and hopefully have its condition carefully checked by an expert before I consider the deal. Thanks again! Mick |

Mick, I would have thought in the region of about 1500 Euro's is a good starting point for bartering, but it depends on its condition. How long is a piece of string - the cost to re-build depends on what you find wrong, if it just needs syncros then only a few hundred Euro's, but if you get into gears and shafts then the price will increase considerably. As the box is already stripped it shouldn't take more than a day and half to clean, inspect and rebuild replacing whatever parts are required. Why don't you have someone inspect it and give you a list of the parts required - we would then be able to price it for you. MW |

No Malcolm, I don`t... But the whole unit is dismantled, so it is possible to take a good look at it. What would you consider a fair price for a unit in well used condition(like a `core`price)? And how much should I calculate for a complete rebuild? Thanks, Mick |

Mick, The risk is, as with any second-hand purchase is you don't really know what you are buying unless you can take the thing apart before parting with any money. Even removing the sump won't give that a clear indication, if it were me and I was going to buy, I would knock down the price, 2400 Euro's is too much, so the choice is yours. By the wat do you know how many miles it has done? MW |

Thanks for the input everybody! Malcolm, if I understand well the casting is the same on all model years? The guy is asking about 2400 Euro`s for the complete unit, including the bell-house and transfer gear case and complete clutch... Just by looking carefully at a unit like this, what are the points of attention? Thanks again, Mick |

The final drive, 17/63 is the same for your car and the box you are thinking of buying. However the 5th gear ratio is different a GTS 5th gear has 28 teeth where as a GTB has 29 teeth, this also applies to an Australian spec car. Depending on what you use your car for and how much you are paying for the gearbox will determine if the box is worth buying MW |

I dont have the info in front of me at the moment but the 308's had several gear ratio differences from market to market as well as injected and QV's. The rear axle ratios also changed but not as much. Ill go out on a limb and say a 77 Euro is different than an injected ratio wise but they will all physically fit the cars. |

As far as I recall, the final drive ratios were changed in the later cars to provide acceptable acceleration despite less power. |

Hi there! Can anybody tell me definitively if there is any difference between the gearboxes(including the complete housings/castings, ratio's and partsnumbers) for the different model years of the 308? A complete gearbox for a 1980 308GTSi was offered for sale to me, and I want to know if it would be a suitable spare for my 1977 GTB. Thanks, Mick |
