I have a Mondial t and had the same problem. Removing the headlining will not help which you may have found out already. The roof runs in an enclosed cavity and cannot be seen even with the headlining removed. What you need to do is:
1. Locate the hard cable outer which comes out the back of the motor in the boot.
2. Remove the cap and fitting from the end of the cable.
3. Operate the roof open button to full open (even though the roof is not moving) and you will see the cable protrude around 20mm beyond the end of the rigid cable when the mechanism/cable is fully open (assuming the cable is not broken).
4. Go back to the roof and now for the brave part. The roof should open if tapped in a rearward direction with the palm of your hand. The operating mechanism will be out of the way if you have electrically run the roof full open.
5. With the roof now open you need to remove the wind deflector and the two chrome tracks. The tracks are secured by two small cross head screws at the forward edge.
6. With the tracks removed it is just a case of pulling the roof forward and out of the runners. The roof will come out completely and you can place on one side.
You are now able to see inside the roof cavity to see what's happening with the mechanism. You can operate the mechanism with the switch and see what is moving and what isn't. I was lucky with my roof it had just seized up through lack of use. A good clean and lube did the job.
The secret to being able to remove the roof is removing that cap from the end of the cable allowing the mechanism to overtravel permitting the roof to be removed.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom. I'll try pulling down the sunroof headliner tomorrow to take a look.

The sunroof headliner just pulls down,it's held on there by push clips.

Sounds like the cable has snapped. I hate to say it but, good luck finding anything for that sunroof The last time I tried to get parts for one the parts guy laughed at me. I know the cable is very similar to M-Benz.

My sunroof just stopped working. The sunroof goes up and down, but it no longer slides back and forth. I can hear the motor running, but it seems like the linkage that moves it back and forth is disconnected. There is also a rattle in the roof that wasn't there before, so it sounds like the linkage fell off. Is there any way to access the linkage, or does it require removal of the headliner?
