Well it sounds like no matter what it's going to be expensive to fix. I talked to the good folks at Grand Touring Inc. in MD to get a second opinion and they said it's very rare for the head gaskets to fail on the 308s. They think there is a possibility the water vapor from the exhaust could be from something else. Anybody know what else it could be and what the associated repair costs might add up to be? Thanks for all the help. |

What's their hourly rate? The F&MoNE & the better shops around here get $85 - $95/hour for exotic car work. so 40-60 Hrs + parts... |

If the heads come off without too much grief, a basic gasket replacement is realistically about 30 hours work to do both banks. Start to finish. You'd be well advised, but not compulsory, to do a "top end overhaul" while you're in there....meaning a good clean and de-coke and a thorough check/replacement of all cams/buckets/valves/seats/guides/springs/seals and clearances. Also, if the heads have been off before, or if you don't know....I'd replace the head studs to be sure they don't stretch. All this can easily take 60 hours + real time. Add all your parts up and factor in the labour at whatever rate you get and you'll see it's probably not far off. I'd attempt to do it all in situ, but it's swings and roundabouts really. |

After the aggravation I am going through in trying to take my heads off, 5K seems like a great deal. I will say my prayers for your heads. |

I understand that it may be possible to remove the front head from a 308 while it is in the car, but inevitably, corrosion rears its ugly head and makes removal nearly impossible. For this reason, it's almost always faster and easier to pull the engine to remove the forward head. |

My mechanic has done many head gaskets *without* removing the engine. Last time I was in there, there was a QV block w/o heads sitting in a car waiting for the heads to come back from the machine shop for resurfacing. And your price is way too high. |

Can't you just buy a rebuilt engine from someone (T.Rutlands maybe?) for $7,500? I know it's more money, but you'd have an entire engine as a spare. |

That is the best way to replace head gaskets, and yes $5000 is about what it will cost when it comes to Ferrari. Actually, they will find some other stuff to fix while there are in there. So you can expect it to be a little more |

My 83 QV is in need of new head gaskets due to some overheating problems it suffered earlier this year. The dealer tells me to replace the gaskets they have to take the engine out. They estimate $5000 for the repair. Does this sound outrageous to anyone but me? What else can I do? |
