Mr. Green - you were a young-ish man growing up in Michigan in the mid-70s and you never went to see the Motor City Madman? Not even Big Bob Seger? You have seen some damn cool shows though. Martin -

ARe we talking the "best band ever" or the best band you've ever seen in a concert? I would say the best bands I've ever seen in concert are Aerosmith and The Stones. Clapton was right in there too. I've also seen some concerts that were great, but I wouldn't say they were the best bands ever. Genesis, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Meatloaf. Even Charlie Daniels... late 70's .. great show. |

My absolute favourite has been U2. Absolutely awesome. Honourable mention to, surprisingly enough, Sade (yes, that's the name of the band). They put on an incredible show. The Police is the band that I would most like to see get back together. If weren't 9 when they broke up I would have already been to like 10 of their concerts. Stewart Copeland has got to be one of the best drummers of all time. |

Dave, I'd have to agree with you on the Allman Bros. I've seen them twice, and since I'm 29 none of it was with Duane in the band. They're a great band. I'd also have to say Santana is Great as well, I saw him last summer. Stereophonic bongo drums are awesome. If anyone is in the Philadelphia area, and they like jazz, check out Jimi Bruno sometime. He normally plays at Chris' Jazz Cafe. He's a jazz guitarist that had been influenced by rock.

I saw Pink Floyd at the Paramont in Seattle about 1970. What I remember is the loonies in the crowd shouting "BOOOOOGIE!!!". Gilmour (who was playing cross-legged on a carpet), got up and said "WE ARE NOT A BOOGIE BAND! WE DO NOT PLAY BOOGIE!" then got back to business. Cool. |

Bruce - unfortunately for me, I missed the best era in rock. I was only 1 in '68 so I wasn't getting out much I often think how incredible it must've been to be around 20 or so in '67 (musically speaking). For about 10-12 years, you could've enjoyed the greatest shows ever seen: the Stones, the Doors, Airplane, Jimi, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Cream, Allmans, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, Boston, etc. etc. etc. the list is truly endless. I truly believe those were the glory days for rock music - everything since has been either a plain rip-off or just plain bad. As for today's mass-marketed pap for the MTV generation, no comment. I think we'll look back on the current era of bad rock, rap, and contrived country the same way we look back on disco. At least I hope we do! None of these guys is fit to lick Eric Clapton's shoe. |

Seriously guys - the Rolling Stones under producer Jimmy Miller (1968-1973) were the quintessential rock and roll band. Man I long for those days of true album rock - these pseudo-punk and rock bands of today have no idea what time it is (for the most part). Don't watch videos - break out the old vinyl! |

There was obviously no way that I knew at the time what a piece of history I was experiencing when I saw The Beatles but I think we knew from the beginning that they were something special. Arthur, I would have loved to have seen Grace Slick back in 1968, especially in Sausalito. I give her my vote for the best sounding female rock singer. Her voice was so strong and clear. |

Van Halen Dallas TX, 1984 Third show (the was the last show David Lee Roth did before quiting the band from what I understand.) The Who at the Cotton Bowl, Dallas TX 1989 Stevie Ray Vaughn was one of the opening acts that day. Wildest show yet. PANTERA with SLIPKNOT Dallas 2001. I thought I was at a Klan rally for the looks of the crowd, got hit in the face by a flying bottle, & numorous pissed off youths "acted" like they wanted to start a fight. Very scary night indeed.

Pink Floyd, bar none. The first time I saw them I was stone sober and I sat stunned and hardly breathing through the whole show. I was mesmerized. The second time was almost as good. The other 'best' were, in no particular order: The Who, seen them many times, and met the band. The Dave Matthews Band, they jam like the Allman Bros did. The Rolling Stones, just because they're the Stones. Stevie Ray Vaughn, I only wish I remembered more of it. |

Dale, Yes, of course I remember. It was my first rock concert. I have used that one as a measuring stick since then. The problem now is that most bands play for (maybe) 1 1/2 hours. None of these new acts seem to want to break a sweat. I must say Pink Floyd, visually, was very impressive, ie.: "On the run" with the movie montage of the guy strapped to the gurney, ending up flying over the audience and crashing into the stage. WOW! Apparently, I come from a different era and a different concept of music than you guys. I can appreciate many of those mentioned so far: the beatles, the who, bb king, csny (saw them actually and neil young several times). And in recent years I've really come to appreciate certain eras of the Stones. I've seen thousands of bands over the years. Most never sold more than a few thousand records. But many were amazing live and even some of my favorite albums were tiny sellers by obscure acts. But just to play along, favorites of mine that some of you may have actually heard of include: The Clash, The Pogues, Pavement, U2, REM, and Los Lobos. But probably the most intense band I've seen live was....Fugazi. |

Darth, are you sure you remember the Led Zep show? David, I lived in the Boondocks when the Beatles were touring (Pensacola, Florida). All I had was a little transistor radio and the Ed Sullivan show in black and white. But I gotta say, that I saw Paul McCartney last year and what a show. I know that it is an act, but he seemed like he was really enjoying himself. And man, what a playlist. What stories. That was the best concert that I have seen in a long time. (Of course, it has been a long time since I went to a rock 'n roll show after my young son begged me to take him to a Metallica show. That was scary...) BTW, I actually did see the Allman Bros once when they were called the Allman Joys, no kidding... Dale

Wrongly so, actually. It is well-documented he was doing research for a book. He was cleared of wrongdoing in an Internet child pornography investigation, but his name has been placed on the U.K. sex offenders registry for five years. Pete Townshend Defended By A Victim's Group Of the many shows I've seen - the one with the most heart I ever saw was a Reunion - the surviving members of The Doors at The Met Theatre, a tiny little venue on Oxford (just off Santa Monica and Western) in Hollywood @ 8 years ago. Robbie Krieger blew the audience away as he played guitar and sang Jim's lines - Densmore and Manzarek were also on fire. They didn't take it lightly. The whole band was greater than the sum of it's parts. |

The Who - seen them several times in the UK in the last 10-15 years. Wish I could have seen them with Keith Moon ( he died in 1978, I was born in 1971 ), and now John Entwistle has died and Pete Townsend is in trouble ( and rightly so ) Even so, they were fantastic live, much better than their recordings. |

I haven't seen them but to me it is without a doubt the Beatles. What are the chances of ever again getting 3 song writers together like John, Paul and George. |

The Beatles. Chicago Ampitheater. Could barely make out the songs with all the screaming. Nobody can ever top their contribution to music. They are most definitely the best band ever. |

Aerosmith. I saw them multiple times in the northeast in the mid 80's. IMO nothing can touch their vintage 70's stuff. |

Okay, MR BRUCE, I see your drummer and best whatever instrumentalist/artist and raise you one... Okay, let's talk about the best band ever. Here're the rules: 1. You had to have seen them live. 2. You must remember seeing them live. For example, I saw the Dead several times. But, for some reason, all I remember is bits and pieces. To this day, I couldn't tell you which bit and which piece relates to which show. ONWARD THROUGH THE FOG! 3. They had to be a real band. Any of you who has ever tried to play with other people understand what I mean. It is one thing to be a rock and roll god. It is something all together different to mesh together as one sound. My sole nominee... multiple drum rolls, please... The Allman Brothers. All I can say is that you had to have been there to understand. When this band locked, it locked. For a few brief shining moments... "Eat a peach, brother." Dale ps. Stevie Ray is the best guitar slinger that I have ever seen live. Play on drummer.
