Jim- a very very good point!

I do have to say though, that the one thing about Bush that scares me to the bone, is how stupid he leads us to belive he is.

Nobody is that dumb, so what's really going on?

Well, a stupid president is just a little threatening mostly by accident, he certinly couldn't be planning any kind of insane crafty , right?

Come on, nobody's that dumb. What's really going on that we're being distracted from?

why don't you all try to have an intelligent exchange of ideas not turn this into a pro dem pro rebup argument?

Art: do you really think bush just sits on his ranch in crawford, tx and dreams up ways to mess up and ruin the country? And do others really think all clinton did was chase girls?

NO!

Also, on a serious note...why don't you guys look further than the current or past President and figure out who is BEHIND the scenes? From most conspiracy theory type books I have read it really makes little diff who is on top as Pres as the real manipulation is done behind the scenes and those manipulators don't change office every 4 years. they span decades so Bush/Clinton makes no difference just different approaches to the same end game.

Joe,
the outrageous behaviour isn't tolerated by most English people, just Blair and his Cronnies, the man is all smiles and soundbites in the media but really only has one agenda, that's to get his name in the history books,
with the current investigations into his behaviour and lies over Iraqi it looks like his historical footnote will be as the most corrupt and decitfull politician in this countrys long long democratic history,
whilst I do not support the Labour party I have colleagues who do and they agree that this man is almost as big a menace as GWB, and a danger to the future and independance of Great Britain

If the saudis didnt have oil they would be a dusty third world nation (most of the inhabitants of the middle eastern live below our percived poverty line whilst the minority enjoy huge huge wealth)
If we can lower our collective reliance on Oil then we can lower the power these people hold over the civilised world (this means stop buying so many F%^&*g SUV's that do 8mpg!)
To target one small (relativley) group of terrorists is foolish, there are many many people in the US who have supported and Donated to the IRA yet how many of them have had their assets frozen?
It is time that the "civilised" world woke up and acted on these problems rather than getting bogged down in red tape and politicaly correct rubbish, Both supporters of Al-Queada(sp) and members of Saddam Hussains family have been granted assylum in the UK, this is something that should be stopped at all costs.
I pay 52% of my income in taxes and get virtually nothing out of it yet thousands end up getting paid to these freaks and criminals! a bullet only costs a couple of Pence(cents)

I'll get off my soap box now

So what about that bikini thread!

James, on general principal... :-)

Art, get a clue, my friend. Bin Laden has literally hundreds of relatives. He has ~50 brothers & sisters alone. 99.999% of them are not scumbag terrorists, and have denounced & disinherited the one who is.

For you to try to smear the president's family for having relationships with that 99.9% is truly despicable, and totally eliminates any moral authority you may have had. You should be ashamed of yourself.

'Nuff said.

At least when Art "bashes" Bush it's about something important as opposed to the years of Clinton bashing about intern blowjobs.

Jim:

the Saudi deal is because they do business with the US. Bush, his Dad, and his family have bin Laden's relatives as partners in various ventures. Our oil industry has had its head up their ass for so many years, that we'll never get it out. We made a deal with the Saudis: cheap oil (which they haven't kept) in exchange for a free pass.

An old saying: sleep with pigs, get fleas. We've done that and we've got fleas.

Joe, I gave up reading Time a long time ago, so I don't have a clue what Time is saying, nor do I care.

But, like Dave sez, the oil connection is perhaps the most single dominate factor in our foreign policy. It has consistantly been the biggest factor in our balance of payment deficit.

President Bush is currently playing the Russians against the Saudis. And, in the short run, this will help. In the long run, though, I fear that war in the Middle East, including the Saudis, is inevitable.

As the father of a 16-year old son, this is not a good feeling...

Joe, good post. On your first 2 points: we are a nation addicted to cheap oil, which the Saudis gladly help provide in exchange for a whole lot of free passes. Plain & simple. You wanna pay $5 a gallon for gas? Tell the Saudis to go pound sand. (although they are so addicted to our $$$ that their asking price would quickly come down; it is too bad none of the genius economists in any US administration has realized this).

IMO, the REAL reasons for going so balls-to-the=wall in Iraq were to (a) drive out & kill a genuinely EVIL bastard with a 30 year track record of murdering millions of his own citizens; and (b) setting up a supply chain for oil that will eventually allow us to wean ourselves from Saudi Arabia permanently.

I realize that this issue has been touched on before, but I just read the latest issue of TIME and I am actually so dumbfounded that I just had to write. I won't bore you with the specifics because I know that a lot of you know of this situation already and those that don't can either see the hardcopy of TIME or check out the online version here: http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101030915/story.html. Bottom line is that the Saudis have all sorts of dirty dealings going on there and Washington knows about almost all of them. Why the free pass?

Generally, I am not given to conspiracy theories and the like, but there is something seriously, seriously wrong here. The Faustian Bargains that America has made with the Saudis and the Saudis have made with the Wahhabists make my blood run cold. There seems to have been some progress, in that the Saudis appear to be cracking down here and there, but I can't help but feel that we're all just seeing and being made aware of about 1% of what's actually happening. This scares the crap out of me.

The second thing that I wanted to mention has had me in a daze since I read it in the same issue. It seems that the radical, fundamentalist, kill-all-the-infidels brand of Islam is so entrenched in Britain that they have groups that recruit with stickers that are labelled "The Magnificent 19" - the stickers show a smiling bin laden and head shots of the hijackers. They hand them out in the open. I am still so shocked that I don't know what else to say.

I can say this much - Canada is known as a tolerant and friendly nation/society and free speech is respected and protected. However, I can guarantee you that anyone that had the audacity to hand out a sticker like that would get his a$$ handed to him on plate within about 30 seconds of setting up his recruiting station. Can any Britons comment on why/how such outrageous behaviour is allowed? I can't imagaine.

Final comment (and I do apologize for the rambling and disorganized nature of this post but I'm quite shell shocked today):

There must be a way to discuss immigration, the war on terror etc., without resorting to simple-minded racism. It has to be a lot more complicated than that. There are a couple of posters on FChat that I suspect spend their weekends wearing white hoods and burning crosses; but everyone else is very even-handed and I really enjoy reading your posts.

On this day of all days, reading this issue of TIME really has me wondering why we bother getting up in the morning and going to work.

Ok that's it - sorry for the gibberish.
