ahem... yes, ah thank you Dr. Erik.

Well... personally, I'm thinning on top a bit and I could stand to lose a few pounds but I'm neither a dentist nor am I divorced.

I guess that explains why I'm between ragtops right now... :-)

I'll probably get beaten up for this one, but what the hell:

"bald, overweight, divorced dentist at the wheel"

I've got way too many data points to back that one up.

Philip, I'm with you. Convertibles all the way! I'm in between drop tops currently but I hope to remedy that soon. :-)

Frank, I don't know for sure (just a guess) but I would imagine it's due to "Targa" coming from the fine folks at Porsche. I think it's Ferrari's way of referring to an open top vehicle by using spyder/spider very loosely. Also, I see "targa" generally refer to the Targa "bar" as opposed to the enclosed rear end of a window/roof assembly as on the 308GTS.

Now that I think of it, I don't believe I've ever heard of a proper name for that type of style. If you throw a bar down the center of the two front seats, they'd be T-tops. If the bar is removed, what is it properly called?? I guess Ferrari calls theirs spyders/spiders.

Do you guys know if they consider a 308GTS as a "spyder?" or a "roadster?" I always thought that it was 308GTB,as in " Grand Turismo Berlinetta",or,hard top. And,the GTS as a "Grand Turismo Spyder". Otherwise, wouldn't it be a 308GTT,as in "Grand Turismo Targa?" I see the Lambo Diablo "roadster",and it really looks more like a targa,...like a 308,328,Corvette "targa". But,these aren't an actual, fully open top car, like a "convertible",or a "Cabriolet". (And,it really doesn't matter,as long as the top is opened.)But I was just curious. Thanks!

Convertibles = Fun........Mike, I'm with you....love convertibles, I really think, once you have a convertible, you never want to go back to a hard top........I got my first convertible 10 years ago....since then I've always had a convertible car in the stable........never want to be without one!

Cool thread!

Mike, open seat or open seater in England. There's one more, trying to wrack my brain to remember it.

Jag XK180, 1998 concept car to continue the XK120/XK140/XK150 range (so named for top speed), http://www.jag-lovers.org/brochures/xk180_press_new.html

Sunny,

I've never heard the term open seat. Is that particular to a make/model or country?

BTW - What kind of car is that in your profile?? That's nice.

I'm a huge convertible fan. If it has a drop top, I'm into it. ~Especially~ if it's a Ferrari.

Recently, I've noticed how hard it is to look for open top autos (on the net) due to the many different synonyms that exist for open top automobiles. These are some of the labels I can think of.

Any others I'm missing?

convertible (and conv, convt, convert, cnv)
cabriolet (and cab, cabrio)
barchetta
spider
spyder
roadster
targa
droptop (and drop top)
drophead (and drop head)
phaeton
al fresca

I realize that all of these labels do not mean the same thing. I'm just wondering if there are other labels for "open tops" in general.

Mike
