Mr.Green. Thanks for the Tommy Chong website info. I visited it,and put my name on the Free Tommy Chong petition. Been a huge fan of "Cheech Y Chong" since very early '70's. ( My nickname in HIGH school was, "THE". -note my last name, and if it's pronounced correctly) Any way, thanks for that info. And whether you do or don't partake.(as the Ringo Starr song goes,"No No NO No,I don't smoke it no more...") Whether you are or aren't a fan of Tommy's. This was a real B.S. deal. There are ALOT worse,REAL criminals out there that could and should be taking up that cell space!

Green, I had no idea that was what this thread was about. Thanks.

Ben, see my response about their "true" Hollywood health episode.

He wasn't popped for the "Hook up" he was popped for selling a water pipe which happens to be legal in most states.

I can personally vouch for one relative who was their aquaintenance and received the "hook up." I'm not talking fishing accessories or bait either.

Chong has been, or played on TV, a stoner since before I can remember. The guy really likes marijuana. Big Deal. He sells 'accessories' on the 'net. Whoop-De-Doo! I'm not 'into' the same things, and I don't purchase his products, but I could care less if other people are.

The case against Chong was purely to grab headlines and show everyone that Bush and Co. still have U.S. social agenda and they're 'tough on crime'.....I'm really impressed.

I think that our government probably has a few other things on their plate that might just be a little bit more important to deal with right now than this. Anyone else agree?

What I find somewhat ironic is that from what I understand both Tommy Chong & Cheech Marin weren't even stoners to begin with (this coming from I think an E! True Hollywood Story episode I saw a while back, but I could be wayyyy wrong about the show). Supposedly they were big health nuts (and still are I believe)and never did partake in all the "fun" they had in their movies. At least Tommy Chong was smart enough to parlay his movie & comedy fame into another business. Not to mention he's an absolute riot on That 70's Show :-) Either way it's a damn shame and hopefully things will work out for him.

Local sales is local sales; Internet sales cross state lines, making it Federal jusrisdiction. Any time you cross a state line in commision of crime or to avoid prosecution it becomes Federal.

Rob,

In federal prison there is no break on the sentence. If they give you 9 months you do 9 months. Your analogy would be correct if it was a state run institution.

Even though i watched a bunch of Cheech and Chong as a kid i never went for the temptation of drugs even though every one else was smoking and snorting around myself. I prefered to smoke my competition racing dirt bikes.

I agree with what is the point of putting a 65 year old in prison. I say if there is to be a penalty make him do PSA on the dangers of drugs. Of course 2 months of good behavior and he will be out.

Do you think that he'll become the "Squirrel Master" in prison like his character in "Half Baked"?

Frank,

I understand about the tobacco use only sticker.
Does this also pertain to the Internet. Why is a store allowed to sell such items, but not the Internet.

Thats it,"next Movie". I used the giant rolling paper that came in the album,"BIG Bambu",and haven't been the same since. Same thing here in Chicago area. Slap a "for tobacco use only" sticker on it,and it's legal(was last time I bought anything) oops. Also agree that by putting Tommy Chong in prison for 9 months is totally bogus. But,look on the bright side. Maybe he'll cheer up some of the other guys that are in there on similar "B.S." charges. . And,maybe that will give him some time to write a "comeback" movie,or album, for him and Cheech. Cheech probably has some time, now, after Nash Bridges was cancelled.

Frank;

The Dino was in "Cheech + Chongs Next Movie" I also grew up watching the movies.

I think the main reason you can buy a bong at a local shop is while federal law states that they are illegal, The "Head Shops" found a loop hole that makes them legal by placing stickers on them that state "For Tobacco use ONLY". This way they can claim that they are selling "Smoking Accesories" and not drug parifinalia. There is one chain of stores in the Phx area that are always advertising this stuff including Whipits. I just wonder how many of there customers are smoking pipe tobacco thru there bongs and making whipped cream??? My guess 0%.

What do they gain by putting Chong in jail?
Meanwhile you can walk into a store in most metropolitan areas add buy water pipes, rolling papers, screens, etc, etc. Are they using him as a scapegoat for the political right.

This makes no sense. Something is either legal or illegal. Obviously the loophole with parephenalia has been in the buyer's choice of use with the item. Does this mean that it is also illegal to distribute over the internet such items as test tube scrubbers, razor blades, mini screens, rolling papers and mirrors?

It's part of the current administrations crackdown on drugs and porn. Even if it's legal locally, that doesn't mean it's legal at a federal level.

I don't think you understand the danger Mr. Chong was exposing us to. In fact, now that he is in jail I bet you'll see crime drop significantly and drug use drop also. Thanks big brother Bush.

Tommy Chong of the Infamous Cheech and Chong was sentenced to 9 months in Federal prison. He was convicted of selling water pipes over the internet. In the state of California there are many stores that sell water pipes. Why is it legal to sell in stores but not over the internet.
