Update on my little Russian dilemna...

Last week, I had the good fortune of running into someone whom I met last year on campus at the starbucks at B&N and we had a nice long conversation... To my dumbfound luck, his girlfriend is on the tennis team and friends with the Russian Gal... We studied at the B&N for a while and then I left... The next day, to my even more good fortune, when I head back to the same place to study my new friend, his girlfriend and Russian gal were at B&N Starbucks studying together... I said hello, quietly sat down with them, started studying, and tried to strike up a conversation with our Russian friend... She had her nose literally buried in her book, would never look up.. After a long awkward silence..I finally said I knew her from the tennis team, knew she was russian from seeing the roster list, greeted her in Russian, and made some excuse that I did not recognize her at first not wearing her tennis outfit and because she changed her hair... (she had it curled or something) When she replied, she sounded so nervous with her voice shaking, I felt so bad, I didn't even remember what she said... I think I made her feel horribly uncomfortable, but I didnt want to make it seem like I thought she was a freakshow, so I stuck around for another hour, and quietly excused myself.. As I was leaving my new friend hinted that if I stuck around awhile longer, that we could all grab dinner somewhere, but I figured, I meet up with them some other time, got his email address, and left... So all you folks who were wondering, that was my first encounter... Geez, I hope I didnt scare off the Russian gal..

LOL, Kendall... Let us know what you decide to say/do and how it works out... (Translation: you're brave, dude...! Let us know how it goes out there so someday, we, too, can get up the nerve to weather the storm...!) :-)

I'll take Ken's advice, and just go up to her and start talking when I see her.. She probably already sees me coming in and out of the tennis center... The Russian topic will just be another diversion and conversation piece.. Heck, if she appears totally disengaged in talking about that, I guess it just reflects her view towards her own culture or,,, she doesn't speak dumbass :-) with stalkers... lol..

It's easier than you think, for someone to see through a shallow/cheesy line or fake attitude... As everyone else has said, just be yourself... Be who you really are... That works out best for everyone involved in the end...

I think Ken is correct. Just be straight with her. Just walk up to her and introduce yourself. Sounds like you have a lot in common so it should be easy!

Kendall, the Russian girls I know like the straight no BS approach. Just walk up to her and speak your mind.

The worst thing you get is a 'no'. Or maybe a slap or a kick depending on what was on your mind at the time.

Seriously, that's what I would do. Just walk up to her and introduce yourself. Be a man and have some guts. If she say no I take you out for a beer. Goodluck.

If you know she speaks Russian, I'd go with drop something and curse midly in Russian. If there's some really idiomatic expression that's really a part of Russian culture, that may pique her interest. You as someone to keep her Russian language skills sharp.

Or I could be totally wrong.

I'd like to hear Rob's "more later"... Anyway, update status report, got out of evening class early, so I'm in the third floor of the library now, she sometimes studies on the second floor at a booth but it seemed real crowded so I didn't bother doing my round looking for an empty seat...

OMG- I need to get a life... I AM a dirty dirty ole man and a stalker...!!

Do what we do at the beach. Have a catch with a football with one of your friends, or in your case, a volley with a tennis ball. Then intentionally overhit the ball so that it whizzes by her head and comes close to hitting her. This gives you an excuse to talk to her. it works.

Seriously though, somehow make it so that the ball rolls over in her direction then kindly ask her to stop the ball or something like that. then thank her and say "i see you around here alot, my name is_____." she will most likely respond with her name. Then say "nice to meet you" and go back to your game. Now you are on a first name basis. In a week ask her if she wants to play a game. Make sure you let her win, but at the same time let her know you are really good at tennis.

Kendall, what is wrong with the direct approach.

"I've noticed you around campus, etc." and just start right up. It looks like you have something to talk about with the language. In fact you could ask her for help in it as an ice breaker.

I was once in your position. Actually, Jennie was one of the first girls that I asked out. I usually had a girlfriend, but I was always the "".

Anyway, I'm much more confident and will talk to almost anyone and do a half way good job. Part of it is being married and I would never cheat on Jennie, so there's nothing to be afraid of. The other is learning to build confidence and skills by visiting the strip clubs. There are beautiful girls there and they don't have clothes on, so if you can talk smooth with them, you can do it with anyone.

My amateur advice...

1) Be yourself.
2) It's OK to look and be a little nervous. That shows you care and girls don't like a cocky over confident guy (not nervous).
3) Compliment, compliment, compliment. You have beautiful hair, eyes, skin, and etc.
4) Be very understated, but let things slip like they're forcing you to say things.

Chick: Oh, you like cars?
You: Yes, I guess you could say that.
Chick: Oh, what kind of cars?
You: Exotic cars.
Chick: What kind of exotic car?
You: Oh, it's not that important, they're all just metal, rubber, and glass.
Chick: Come on, please tell.
You: Wellllll, I own a Ferrari. :-)

5) Girls love a sense of humor, along the lines of above, usually make jokes about yourself.

More later...

Next time you're near her, drop all your tennis balls. Then curse in Russian. Nothing too racy, just enough to show you have a command of the language. See if she responds. If that doesn't work, try 'Hi'.

Ask her in Russian for some pickup lines in Russian...

Or just ask her if she has a sister. Next best thing.

I had a friend in college who simply asked them if they wanted to ---- on the first date. He said it saved a lot of time and he got a surprisingly large number of affirmative answers. I never had the guts to try it, nor am I suggesting it as a policy, just reminiscing.

Kendall, do as i do; just continuously stalk her, constantly "popping up" in the places she's in... She'll eventually notice, get worried and probably call the cops, but so what, right...? Going up to her and saying something like, "Hey, how are you...? i've noticed you on campus and there's just something about you... i've been dying for the opportunity to just buy you a cup of coffee and chat... Is that possible...?" is so much more difficult; i could never do that... My restraining orders hang along the walls in my bedroom... :-)

OK here's the situation.. I'm back at school now for my second year of my MBA program.. I see this undergrad often on campus, like almost daily now but usually from a distance... I vaguely recall seeing her last year... Usually, I don't have problems saying hello to strangers or striking up a conversation if someone smiles.. But for some reason, I see this a lot in social situations, if you get accustomed to seeing the same person(s) but never acknowledging them, you get in a routine of never making eye contact... Recently, I discovered she plays on the tennis team, since I have more time this year and practice at the tennis center on the ball machine a few times a week, and looking at the roster, discovered she is of russian descent. (I studied russian for over 5 years in my youth).. Since having discovered that, and paying more attention, she seems more and more attractive... How would you approache someone you see, but never have any sort of social interaction without looking like a fool?? Bizarre as it sounds, at this point, it seems awkward to just go up to someone like that and say hello..
