Terry must be in the telemarketing business. Terry, your flow of logic went awry at the first step, and just got worse from there. Magazine and television advertising is paid by advertisers to make use of the medium the owner of said medium has spent money and time building. You also have the option to not watch TV, change the channel, not buy the magazine, etc. Telemarketers are not paying anyone for their use of the phone company's service and there is no option not to get such calls unless you don't have a phone. Maybe people are doing that now - too bad they feel that need. The do not call list gives consumers the option, just like with TV or print advertising, not to get such calls. Riddle me this. Why do telemarketers want to call people who don't want to hear from them? Wouldn't they save money by not having to make calls that would not result in a sale? They should be happy about this! But we both know they don't like the idea simply because they are hoping to bully/pressure/coerce people into a sale. You think it's OK that some people are not as rude/strong/forward as others and they get suckered into telemarketer tricks? If you think the masses should "deal with it" to prevent unemployment of those people, then why not implement other silly things that encorach upon everyone's freedom and free time to keep people in a job - maybe we could add mandatory city vehicle inspections once per month for all vehicles... it will create thousands of jobs! |

When you get half a dozen a day and asking to be removed from one list doesn't remove you from all lists, now does it? I have to listen to someone's bullshit because they're people and need their job just like the rest of us? I'll forward the calls to you, since your so humane and concerned about listening to what they have to say to protect their livelihood. We're talking about telemarketing here, lets try to stay on topic without overreacting, mmmm'kay? Sunny |

Yea! Lets put all those telemarketing companies out of business! All those people dont need jobs! Screw them! If telemarketing didnt work.... generating business for companies that use it.... it wouldnt exist. Generating business is what makes a capitalist system work. Passing laws that restrict the ability to conduct business and eliminates thousands of jobs is plain stupid. Is it really that hard to just hang up? Jeeeeeeez I can hear the next collective whine: Why should I have to see commercials on my TV in my own home? Outlaw commercials! How about ads in my magazine? I paid for the magazine after all... its mine... OUTLAW them! I dont want to put up with ads. Its my mailbox, why should I have to sort through all this junk mail..Outlaw it! As a matter of fact.... all advertising is an infringement on my privacy! Lets outlaw it all! We dont need it anyhow.... things would be so much easier if the Govt. just controlled what we buy and made all those decisions for us. <------ This is what the Liberals want. Outlawing means of direct marketing is a step in that direction. No marketing means less competition. Less competition means fewer competitors.... and if the Govt gets its way ultimately only Federally regulated and approved companies who are assigned your business. After you have received Federal approval to do business of coarse. Appropriate forms filed and fees paid of coarse. Is saving you the horrible inconveniece of having to simply answer the phone, immediatly say "dont call me again" and then hang up really worth putting thousands of people out of work? Are you so damn selfish that you care that little for someone elses livelyhood? Dont these people have a right to earn a living? Im amazed that people care so little for others that they would rather they be put out of work than have to occasionally spend 20 seconds hanging up on a telemarketer. I cannot think of a more selfish attitude.... only in America. Dont forget: There but for the grace of God go YOU. |

I want the phone numbers of that federal judge so I can start selling products to him, and his family if I get their numbers too, late at night and early in the morning. We'll see how many calls it takes for that fuckstick to ponder the wisdom of his ruling. Its illegal to telemarket to cell phones... for now. Its a reason why I don't have a home phone (I have one, but I don't know what the number is, its sole purpose is broadband internet). But I'd love to make this guy miserable. |

Thank goodness I just picked up a digital answering machine that announces the number - no more getting up to see the caller ID |

Telemarketing doesn't bother me so much. Just let caller ID screen the calls. If I screw up and accidentally answer a telemarketing call, click, just hang up. Sure it's rude but they're rude for calling you in the first place. |

I think the judge is wrong. If you don't want someone to call you then, you should be able to have it your way. It is my phone and I should be able to block out those annoyinf me on it. |

I don't even answer my landline anymore. It just rings and if I recognize the caller ID then I answer it (bummer that I have to kick back money to the phone company to have Caller ID to figure out which calls I should take or not...) I've set up my computer to answer blocked caller IDs calls and play the three tone disconnect sound in hopes that the telemarketers would think they'd reached a dead number. Maybe I'm imagining it, but it does seem to have cut down the calls some. |

Could see that one coming. It's an annoyance, but I personally see it the same way as other marketing - direct mailings, television and radio commercials, print ads. I personally just leave my answering machine on to get all those calls... |

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=1&u=/ap/20030924/ap_on_bi_ge/do_not_call "OKLAHOMA CITY - A federal judge has ruled that the Federal Trade Commission overstepped its authority in creating the national "do-not-call" list against telemarketers. The ruling Tuesday came in a lawsuit brought by telemarketers who challenged the list of 50 million people who said they do not want to receive business solicitation calls. The list was to go into effect Oct. 1. " I guess there are 50 million unhappy people today... |
