Mike B,

Yeah, No sh...t! That's why I had no idea what to wear. This was an important function for my wife, so I even though my first instinct was the same as yours, I decided to behave and at least try to look the part while I really wanted to ask if there was a bar in the house and whether they could roll a big screen in so I could flip channels back and forth amongst the football game, the US GP, and the Talledega race.

David,
I know it is pointless as a Ferrari subject, but I posted it off-topic because it wasn't Ferrari related as such. I knew that some members of F-Chat would have some experience in this matter. Sorry to waste YOUR time, thanks to all of those who responded seriously and to those had a rather lighter approach. I did attend wearing a business casual type outfit. Seemed to fit in well.

>>>good to know, mike

the subject was "What does a Gentleman wear to an afternoon tea?". methinks you might need to work harder at being a gentleman

doody.<<<

Absolutely! I am not much of a gentleman :-)

But seriously, I do enjoy some staged cases of formality - like nice dinners, taking the chiquita out for a nice night on the town, etc, but the idea of "afternoon tea" just reeks of old money snobbery and pretention. And when I sense that sort of thing my first instinct is to "shake things up" a little! :-)

chino's shirt and jacket, nothing more, it all depends on who is inviting you and their definition of "afternoon tea", personaly if I was invited to afternoon tea on a sunday I'd think of it as being a bit odd, lunch on sunday usualy goes through to early evening (lunch at 2.30-3pm lasting till 4ish followed by a few drinks!!!), by which time you're usualy too Pi**ed to care what your wearing!!!!!!!

Red tie, Blue/White shirt, Navy blazer, Tan Trousers, Reddish (Meltonian) Belt & Shoes.
Looks appropriate in almost any setting, whether formal, informal, in-between, even tittie bars.

Personally, if I was invited to "tea", I would show up in sweatpants and a biker t-shirt carrying a case of coors.

The object being NOT to get invited again in the future.

afternoon tea is generally not an ultra-formal or "be-seen" event, however it is not a lounge-about in jeans & t-shirts exercise either. ladies will often wear pants instead of a dress or skirt, but they'll dress smartly. gentlemen are usually expected to wear a jacket, and sometimes a tie as well depending upon the host and/or location. khakis, a tweed jacket, and an oxford shirt sans tie should get you through. if the tea is at, say, the tennis club, some might come in wimbledon whites (though of course, freshened up appropriately after a match!) shorts / shirt / sweater, which of course would be acceptable in that locale. your host should not take any affront if you ask beforehand what the dress code is; in fact they may be delighted that you care enough to ask - so don't be bashful.

My wife and I are invited to an "Afternoon Tea" today. Since I don't normally run in the circles of those who "tea", I need some advice on appropiate attire for such a function.
