dario, is that public record or do you have access to a liquor sales rep? Do you have other bars? Would be curious to all the bars on Greenville Ave, McKinney Ave, Knox and Addison.

You notice none of those places are cheap to build. Amazing that Dukes was a defunct Hoffbrau and I don't think they changed anything but the sign and look at that!

Here are the top sellers for the month of JUNE in Texas ... these are liquor sales ... doesn't include cover ... most places don't have a cover listed below ... this gives you a general idea of what is making money. The trend right now is the old style all wood bars like Sam's, Dukes, & Sherlock's that have HUGE wood Patio's that play top 40 and rock music and have huge crowds mon-sun, lots of beer drinkers, lots of white people, your typical college or late twenties early thirties crowd that you would see at the lake are going there and packing the place. I remember Sam's boat for one month was number #1, #2, #3 top liquor sales, that was two in Houston and one in San Antonio. However, Sam's and Dukes suffers in the winter time because there HUGE patio is of no use, Sherlock's is all inside and does well for itself all year, it is about 10,000 sqft. Liquer Tax is 17% of sales and cost is about 25% give or take ...

so what is a new bar idea or trend? I don't know how many "blue drink bars" there can be. Depends on your age and location too I guess.

What are the diff groups into now?
College Kids?
Upscale crowd?
Casual crowd?
Gay crowd?
Country?
Etc?

Cater to women. I don't mean like having the Chippedales there every night (that's just damn gross), but make the place more attractive to women. There is nothing more than I hate than going to a bar/club and walking in on a freekin' sword fight. What I guess I mean is do what you can to bring as many women in as possible and then the guys will follow. "Ladies night" always attracts a bunch of guys because they think since it's "ladies night" there will be a bunch of chicks there, right? Wrong. Women don't want to go somewhere that is gonna be a meat market. Then once guys notice the place is only filled with other dudes they'll stop coming too. Next thing you know the place is empty and subsequently it goes out of business. I'm not speaking from direct experience owning a club, but I do go out a lot, probably more than I should (I like to socialize what can I say :-)), and live in the DC/Metro area so there are quite a lot of bars/clubs here and it's the same story everywhere it seems. Just my $.02 cents, but I too would love to open a club (or several) once I graduate from school. I'd love to hear more about your experiences in the biz DrS :-)

DrS:
I would like to hear what you have to say if you want to post publicly or email private. I have toyed with nightclub ownership for years, but I can't figure out the formula. Crowds are so fickle so I hate to dump $???K down a drain.

Like I said before some guys seem to just lease an existing spot and do nothing and it goes big and others can spend $1MM and get nothing.

I used to think I was in touch with the pulse of the crowd, but as I get older (33) I am not so sure.

DrS,
If youre interested in casinos, the first thing is to contact the gaming regulatory agency in your jurisdiction. It can be a very profitable business, but much depends on the local laws. Aprox. 60-65-70% of revenue comes from slots, and 99.9% of problems come from tables, so unless you have plenty of experience, I would advise to start off with slots.
Best of luck

Casino eh? Have you read the art of the deal by Trump? He makes BUCKETS of cash from his casinos, but you have to jump through a lot of hoops to even be allowed to open one and you need to put up a bunch of cash...anyway, I highly reccomend reading that book, it goes through the entire process of building his casinos.

Gus, i had started to type something out, but then decided against even replying to this scum bag... He's all @#$%ed up inside with feelings of inadequacy; if YOU had a Diablo, a Lotus and a 355 sitting in your garage, would you be here putting people down or would you be out driving...? He's a low life... That's all there is to it... The better part of hi trickled down his mother's thigh.

Free drinks for women from 5-7. Guys will buy anyway to act cool. Sports book behind the bar.

Give the bartender 5-10 drinks a night to give away (he will anyway).

Should be 4 deep at the bar after the women start to consistantly show up.

All you need is a good manager with experience who knows how to promote the place and get people to come. Working with a nighclub manager who managed big clubs you have heard of in NYC, for 4 years gave me some insight on how they work. If there are any colleges in your area, this will help. There are many things to consider when trying to open one up.
One hint- alternative lifestyle night. gay people dont really have many places to go, and theres alot of money to be made off them AND i hear they tip really well.
Also, make sure you have a good decorator and light guy. no one wants to go to a club that doenst do anything for them visually.

Dr. Strangelove owned a biggity ole bar. Maybe he will give some insight, but he is in Thailand right now.

Everyone I know says they usually make money ifyou are hands on, but beware of thiefs when you are away. Also, depending on your area you may consider selling it within a year or so as the avg life is 18 months unless you hit it just right. Strange how some clubs stick around with no money spent and others spend tons and are gone in a blink. I know a guy who is making it big at a location that has failed about 4 times in the last 3 years. He attributes it to his circle of friends...word of mouth.

I've been contemplating opening a nightclub in my town. There are several bars in my area (catering mostly to blue collar folks), but nothing at all targeting the dance club loving guys/gals within a 30 mile radius. I have about 200,000 people in a 20 mile radius and this is a tourist based economy with some manufacturing as well. I know how to run a successful business, just no experience with a bar. I know you must watch out for thiefs, you are potentially liable if someone gets in an accident that you served, and there are long hours involved, but what are some other negatives or pitfalls that go with this type of business? I would be able to get a piece of land and put up a building for about $300,000. I have no plans to serve food and would have a 1st class DJ spinning dance tunes-no plans for live music. All of my friends/friend's friends keep saying that there are no good bars in our area, and I agree! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
