Ah... The sideways "s" is in fact a "Tilde", or "~" (to the left of the 1 key).

Do you use Outlook Express?

One thing that can definitely cause this problem is the installation of a certain patch from Microsoft, which might have happened without you knowing about it (via "Critical Updates"). Outlook Express Patch numbered Q330994 maybe?

Here's one additional thread for reference:

I don't know what that file is and have no idea if it's an important file or not.
But check START>PROGRAMS>STARTUP see if the file is there and delete, probably it won't appear on your desktop again.
If it didn't work, look at the file's properties and see if it's a shortcut and find the main files location and delete it from there.

Quick Question...I changed over from Win 2000 to XP Pro.

I've noticed that after I'm on the net a strange icon appears on my desktop.

The file type shows a "s" that is sideways! Have no clue to this type of file...

Don't think it's a cookie....I delete it, and then it pops up again a few days later on my desktop...only after going on the net.

Any guru out there that can tell me what this is our have any XP users encountered this?
