Hey Ben - I love light cars! Lighwigh = free HP, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Mark, id rather a 300 hp car with a 1000kgs weight than a 600hp car weighing 1800 kgs.

SL65 is supposed to produce in excess of 612horsepower...

Chris- that was just a tight track :D)

Besides, ever seen an F1 car? Most of the time they struggle to put down power.
Makes it more of a challenge.

Though I'd like to see lighter weight take a priority, road-worthiness crash tests increasingly fight the lightweight car.

I bet Nebula's buds end up suing Lotus for building an 'un american' light car. Sigh.

Best!
Ben.

I wondered about this anew once I saw the video of the new Carerra GT on the test track. Coming off of every corner, it seemed to have so much power that you could barely dab the throttle before it would break loose - I'm all for speed and horsepower you can use, but that would drive me crazy (still, I'm sure it'd be fun to try and get used to!)

I kind of agree with Nebula - some regulation will end up stunting the market for a decade or two (I hope not...)- this is essentially what happened in the early 70's, when the Mustang went to 125hp! Unfortunately, we didn't clue in on the small car thing too fast then.

Then Honda will make a 400hp 1.8 liter engine and we'll be happy on the streets again revving around at 18,000RPM :-).

"That is why we have speed limits."

So 'splain me this one: A "classic" car's performance can be massively improved, just by fitting modern tires. The capabilities of modern cars have been improved just by the advances in tire technology over the last 30 years.

So why are speed limits lower now than they were then?

Yes, I know. For the same reason the passing zones are being painted out: Big Bother doesn't think us poor dumb peepils can handle driving a car. (After all, if we elected these guys, we must be stuupid.)

Hopefully it will end when the war for lightweight cars begins. Who cares if the supercharged SL or M whatever makes 600+hp, it weighs ~4300lbs. What I would like to see is something similar to Mr. Glickenhaus' P4, 1800lbs and 450hp.

From Jordan:
"I believe at some point cars will just become too powerful for the road system we have now. There are sections of road where you just cant go faster than you can now with the road conditions, size, and form as they are now. "

Jordan,
That is why we have speed limits.

Nebula,
You forgot one very important prediction:

Telson is promoted to assistant professor at Enrique's ESL Institute due to his superior debating skills.

Here's my bet: BMW hits 500hp, Benz matches it with 525hp. Ferrari and Lambo begin to compete in the 700hp market.

Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and Art Chambers sue the Auto industry and the internal combustion engine is burdoned with incredibly heavy restrictions. HP across the board drops by 500%.

30 years later, the HP numbers are back to what they were before the lawsuit, only the engines are more evolved.

There you have it!

Saddly, BMW seems to be loosing. Gone are the times that the ///M5 and 750 were kings...now I can honestly say I would rather have a Benz...all benz will do is turn up the boost. Not to mention the new E looks better then the new 5 (would never have guessed I would of said that..while the old 5 looked better than the old E.

This is coming from a BMW nut who has loved BMW second only to Ferrari and wishes Bangle death from a 1000 lashes in a square in Munich.

At least the old ones are still gold. :-)

To me, it seems like the horse power wars will come to an end once the new M5 comes out. I don't envision companies putting more than 500 hp in a sedan. What do you guys think?
