Definitely get a second opinion if you feel uneasy.

True story: In my freshman year at college, my best friend got really sick the last week of school. He had a fever, was sweating through his sheets at night (you could ring them out in the morning), and just felt miserable. After a few days, he went to Health Services. They said he just had the flu - take some advil and he should be fine. About a week later, he was still getting worse. He went to his normal doctor at home, only to find out he had pneumonia the entire time and could have died had he not come to get it treated.

I've never trusted Health Services since.

if you get this during the night, and an EKG doesn't show anything wrong with your heart, it could be acid reflux (GERD, etc.).

try tossing back a couple of TUMS before you go to sleep to see if it doesn't clear it up.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR, and i don't even play one on the internet. i'm just talking out my ass, so don't even think of trying to sue me if you have a major coronary tomorrow :-). go see a real doctor, not the university randomness.

Ronald:

Given your age and your description of the symptoms I would suspect a benign cause. Often, what we refer to as "atypical chest pain" (i.e. in a young person such as yourself, not related to exerting yourself, short duration. etc.)is related to a condition known as Mitral Valve Prolapse. This is usually not dangerous and is found in many people. Chest pain is a common complaint with this typically benign condition. However, if this persists I would recommend seeing an Internist or Cardiologist for further evaluation.

By all means, get a Second Opinion. For this task, a Health Services Doc ain't up to snuff.

Ok if it persists SEE SOMEONE who knows what the hell they are looking at.
Rob I know the feeling my dad's family usually checks out between 50-55 only have 3 of 7 uncles left on that side, Mom's 100+ and an adverage would be a good thing.
My dad went at 54 just after saying "I've never been sick a day in my life but I am not feeling too go....."
Had a Hiatial Hernia that masked heart problems. Get wired into something with an EKG. Also possable is what they call Panic Attacks where the ticker just rockets away during high stress. Have done that one my self a couple of times.
Scary thing when the plumbing is not working as advertised.
In all Seriousness try and see a specialist if you can. If you are in an area where a good ER is handy go right in there when you are experinecing the problem. My dad had a complete physical 48 hours before his massive corranary.

Ok, guys, I got myself checked out with the Health Service's Doc. I'm a bit dissapointed. She couldn't really come to any conclusions. She said it could be stress, general pain, etc. The bottom line is that because the pain doesn't last that long (each 'episode' lasts < 5 mins) it's not something to worry about. She gave me some Advil and said if it happens again but it lasts longer to go the ER immediately.

I started getting heartburn really bad about 6 months ago. Mine really isn't a shooting pain. From what I understand, heartburn is basically like having a sore that acid has eaten away at. Anything at all will cause pain as it comes in contact with the sore. I thought it was my heart at first too, so I just set up a doc appointment. They took me through a stress test that wasn't conclusive because they stopped it early as they thought my blood pressure was too high. They're use to 75 year old inactive heart patients and not 29 year old endurance athletes. My heart rate was at 130 when they stopped it and she said I was way past where anyone had gone the previous days. I usually workout up to 180-195 heart rate. My rest heartrate is under 40. Early next year I'm going to a special clinic here in Dallas that works with athletes and they'll do a complete day of tests. I take things extra careful as no males on my fathers line have lived past 59, all with heart problems. Ohh, it would be cool for Jennie if I kicked the bucket, she could buy the coolest Ferraris with the insurance.

Ron, head to the doctor ASAP!! James is right, don't think your age gives you a free pass.

A friend died this week of a heart attack. He was 48, biked 100 miles a week and ran 25 miles a week. He thought he was invincible. None of us are.

"move this to the Tech section and post pictures"

LOL!

Ok. I will go get it checked out ASAP. However, I do not have the time to spend 6 hours in the ER waiting for a doctor. I'll go Monday to Health Services on my campus.

I will report back my findings!

Again, thanks for all the input and advice. I really appreciate it. Now go wish Bruce good luck with his eye surgery - there's a more serious problem!

Either get serious and go see a doctor, or else move this to the Tech section and post pictures. Hope it's nothing serious--good luck.

Weird.. this actually used to happen to me pretty frequently, usually during periods of extreme stress. I'd get bad chest pains, increased heart rate.. felt like it was going to pop out of my chest, etc. Oddly enough, about a year ago (I had just turned 26) I was swimming around in a hotel pool when I blacked out for no reason and the ol' ticker stopped. Spent a few minutes at the bottom of the pool getting acquainted with death, when a friend of mine noticed I'd been under water a bit *too* long. There was an ambulance nearby so luckily I was revived and everything turned out ok after spending a week in cardiac ICU..

Point of the story though is that I'm in the same boat.. never smoke, never drink, exercise regularly, eat pretty well, etc.. but after all that and 3 different cardiologists, they all say I'm fine and there's nothing wrong with my heart. So I dunno.. have it checked out I guess, but it might just be heartburn or something insignificant. Hope it clears up, whatever it is..

Ronald,

ER now!!! Age does not matter when it comes to the heart. A friend of mine dropped dead in his backyard while vacuuming his pool. 27 years old, straight, non-smoker, very light drinker, good health.

Don't take a chance and don't be afraid of what you might hear.

Ronald,

Don't mean to alarm you, but I think you should go to ER. Don't freak out or anything, but go in there and tell them the exact details. You should be checked out asap.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses. I don't take any supplements or steroids. I don't drink coffee but I do drink the occasional Coke.

I'm not sure about my heart beating faster. It's just a sharp pain that tenses me up, makes my back arch. Lasts for under five minutes. I'll pay attention to my heart beat the next time it happens.

Peter...yes...I get it...

Does your heartbeat normal and then all of a sudden it does a double beat or skipped beat giving that "hard" beat? PVC (Premature ventricular contractions) maybe? Are you taking any supplements like creatine, fat burners, etc? Too much caffeine? Either way, I'd check with your doctor. Best of luck.

Ron...www.webmd.com is great for this sort of question (if you do not want to see your doctor). If you let it go, you just MAY see a doctor, probably from your back, looking up at him!..get it?

Hi Bob!

You're totally right! I've been impressed with the responses to medical inquiries here in the past so I thought I'd give it a go.

<<shooting pains through my heart>> <<I'd involuntarily arch my back>>

Ron, some of these guys are pretty good at changing clutches however I think you need to seek immediate advice from a doctor, not F-Chat. Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

Long time no post!

Lately I've been getting shooting pains through my heart (or heart area). It's almost like someone has their hand around it and is squeezing it very tightly. At around 2:30 this morning I had a very bad episode while sleeping. With each 'shot' I'd involuntarily arch my back.

Is this heartburn? I'm a youngin - only 22 - so I've never experienced heartburn before. I have a very good diet and work out 5 times a week. I'm stressed out but in a good way.

Please advise!

Thanks,

Ronald
