Try the Pontiac Aztek Rally. Lowered suspension = easy to get in and out of, good handling, tons of room inside, rides and drives like a car not a truck. Has a 9.1 out of 10 rating on Edmonds.

They're nice if you don't mind a vehicle built like trash - they've been recalled literally ten+ times. If she liked that size vehicle check out the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV. The Escape may be cheap, but you get what you pay for.

no long term exp with an escape (just ridden in one a couple times) but have you looked at the xterra's? i know 4 people who have them and are very happy. i think both cars start around $20k base w/ a 6 cylinder and imo would rather have a nisaan instead of a ford... good luck.

Sorry, no road tests here. Actually my wife needs a new car--something with space but not a huge, full-sized SUV. She rented an Escape for the weekend and liked it. Anyone here have any longer term experience with them? They're relatively cheap, and I'm not going to buy a $40K-plus car to park on the street.
