VW's involvement with the actual race cars of Audi goes about as far as Fiat's involvement with the Ferraris... The Bentley is the Audi Coupe which was deemed less competitive than the open version (and Audi was right, proven by the string of wins). Funny memory came back to mind.... In 2001 Lavaggi won the Monza 1000 KM race in a 333SP with a Judd engine! Not a bad move as he probably wouldn't have made it with the original engine... I still have the next day's "Gazetta dello Sport" somewhere with the headline "Lavaggi vince con una Ferrari sacrilega" or "Lavaggi wins with a sacrileged Ferrari"... Fun! Jack P.S. First three places went to Judd-engined cars that year. |

There should be. VW owns both Audi and Bentley. And Skoda, SEAT and other minor car manufacturers. So a win by either Audi or Betley is a win for VW as well. Anyway, those Audi cars running are technically privateer teams, as Audi has 'retired' from Le Mans since they have nothing to prove anymore. |

>>>Don't you mean Volkswagen? Nope... there is no VW involvement with the Bentley other than financial. The Bentley is basically the Audi coupe in slightly more developped form. Jack |

Jack It's J6. J5 is the Foyt/Gurney car. There was confusion for a while that I cleared up with records, race reports, and physical inspection. The latest GT40 books have corrected that error. My car still has the dent in the tub that Bruce made when he threw down his helmut and ran to retrieve the tail that had blown off on the Mulsanne. Best Jim |

P.S. I have seen your MK-IV here before but didn't pay too much attention (saw it in front of Bill Hart's place) but which MK-IV is it exactly? Jack |

Jim, very true about the paint. If I am not mistaken, Carlo Abarth, who was a fierce opponent of "weight", refused to have the undersides of any of his cars painted or undercoated as that was just "superfluous mass that wants to go straight on instead of around a bend" hence so many of those lovely Fiat 500, 600 and 850 based Abarths that have rusted away. If you REALLY want to find out what times your MK-IV could turn on the full current Le Mans circuit, it would be possible to enter it in the next "Le Mans Classic" which, if everything goes well, will be held next year. It's a GREAT nostalgic event that last 24 hours although the field is split up in "age" groups which run races of 40 minutes, come in and the next group goes out for a 40 minute race etc. That way, every group gets to race 4 times during the 24 hours and also races at night etc. Last years event was a HUGE success and you would be racing against guys like Nick Mason, Mark Knopfler and Alain de Cadenet. The classic event for this year is only Formula cars and saloon cars and in a different format. So, maybe by next year the P4 could be ready as well and you could enter them both the P4 and the MK-IV and pitch them against eachother.... Jack What you said about the paint is very true. In the 60ies the paint was so thin on many race cars than it was more of a wash than a paint. It's interesting to note the lap times you posted. 36 years ago my MK-IV turned a 3:22 faster than the Audi's or the Bentley's do today. The course of course has been changed since 67, two chicanes have been added to the Mulsanne for example, however it's still interesting to note. I wonder what my MK-IV could turn on the new course... |

A little fun fact from the Spyker pits... Last year they ran the car mainly in bare aluminum. This year, they actually have a sponsor... Orange (Mobile Telephone Network) and orange also happens to be the Dutch national (racing) color and Spyker is Dutch of course. Adding the orange paint scheme to the car added 15 KGS (!) or some 30+ Lbs of weight to the car! Hahahahahaha! Jack |

Where can I see the full results? I'd like to see where the F-cars are slotted when compared to their rivals (Porsches in GT and Corvettes in GTS). |
