I agree that there should be a greater spread between 1st and 2nd. Maybe 4 points.
I would suggest 11.7.5.3.2.1

After all it is all about winning.

Hate to think that KR could have won the championship by winning only one race in the whole season. In fact, I think its the only race he has won. Just stupid.

DJ - I'm working on an in-depth look at the 2 scoring systems and 5 others. Here's a summary of what they're all based on:

(8) Now: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 Spread: 2-2-1-1-1-1-1
(6) Then:10-6-4-3-2-1 Spread: 4-2-1-1-1

(8) Prime numbers: 17-13-11-7-5-3-2-1 Spread: 4-2-4-2-2-1-1
(6) Prime numbers: 11-7-5-3-2-1 Spread: 4-2-2-1-1

(8) Compromise: 12-9-6-5-4-3-2-1 Spread: 3-3-2-1-1-1-1
(6) Compromise: 10-7-5-3-2-1 Spread: 3-2-2-1-1

(7) Further Compromise I'd Recommend: 10-7-5-4-3-2-1 Spread: 3-2-1-1-1-1
Why is that recommended, wax?:
a) 3 & 2 Point Spread on the Podium, respectively.
b) Separates the podium from the pack, and the pack from one another, one-by-one.
c) Odd numbers of point winners are the norm. ie
1 if winner-take-all, 3 if medalists, 5 if ribbons, 7 if honorable mentions are included. 6 is too few, 8 is too many.

I'm breaking down the point rewards in an driver-by-driver, race-by-race format first, then team-by-team. Then the changes in the actual point spreads. When completed, I will present the raw data for consumption under a new topic - this will allow one to see the advantages and disadvantages of each system, and reach their own logical conclusion as to what appears to work fairly to one and all, (Fans, Drivers, Teams, Bigshots) and what doesn't.

Under the old scoring system, Michael would have had it wrapped up weeks ago, and rightfully so. The new scoring system is stupid. Racing is about winning and there should be a much larger gap between 1st and the other places. If they want to pay points down to 8th place, fine: but make it 20 for a win, 12 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd, and so on. None of this 10,8, 6.. crap.

Definitely not RS's fault that collision. Not sure whos but like Jack said it did look like Da Matta braked early.

In the end MS was extremely lucky not to get a flat tyre or broken left rear suspension, etc.

While I did not enjoy the season as much as some, I will admit to finding that race very stressful, and thus exciting. Thus I have to admitt that the new rules might have had something to do with this ... or was it just Michelin raising their game ?

Time for RB to step up and start beating MS instead of expecting MS to slow for him :-)

I don't feel you can blame Ralf for what happened (I'm not a huge fan of his, but he's ok in my eyes).

Da Matta, being no rookie at racing, gave MS a brake test and MS had to swerve to the left to avoid him.

Ralf was even more surprised and, IMHO, did what he could to avoid a collision.

While still spinning, you could see him raise his hand to MS as a sign of "sorry, didn't intend that".

So, I don't think there will be any harsh words between the two brothers tonight.

Just my observations of course, for what they are worth.

Jack

Oh, I almost forgot...

Probably the best racing season EVER and congrats to the team!

I thought Michael did an impressive job of holding off Ralf. At one point Ralf tried to make a move on him and Michael just shut the door on him. You can't blame Ralf for trying to get by him. People are always critical of him when it comes to him getting past Michael. At one point they had the rear camera view from Damatas (sp) car and they disapeared from view. I thought they took each other out but luckily it was just Ralfs car that was damaged.

Regarding Jim Avery's Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 12:12 pm post:

Jim Avery was spot-on correct to post the quotes and the accompanying team picture. He understands.

This was the final televised question and answer exchange between reporter and Champion. Notable was the fact that while other answers had Michael looking at the reporter while answering - he looked straight at the camera during this one. The significance is that his sentiments were centered around we, the team and it was very real and heartfelt. Through the spectacle of it all, this is the most important of life's lessons learned and shared with his fellow man. Schumaker redefined the touchstone of not just an individual's accomplishments, and strength through humbling experience, but that of a team's, and the F-1 culture.

Now that was the most stressful race I have ever watched!!!

Concrats and MS deserved the win, far best results of the season.

I must say I was a little disapointed in Kimi not stepping up and pushing RB. The fact that Coulthard was able to follow Kimi right to the end shows how slow Kimi was going. Thus guess he is not ready to be WC!.

Good drive by RB ... nervous and tentative drive by MS that nearly got him into trouble ... but to give the guy a break, that must have been a scary race.

I am glad that MS got points so it was not just a RB helped to win title situation.

:-):-)

With the way Montoya rocketed away from everyone, he must have over revved or had 1 gallon of fuel.
It seems to me that there are times it is important for Ralf to show Uncle Frank he is not about to defer to his older brother. His co-driver certainly doesn't.....
Double character points to the whole Ferrari team and the leadership for fighting back - not neccesarily an attribute I would have given them pre-Luca. While the outstanding singular performances are world-beating, I must tip my hat to deMontezemelo for setting up, resourcing, and allowing the team to function the way it does.
Double character points for Rubens because.... there are just too many reasons not to.
Forza Ferrari!

Q: Well, you did finish in the points, in eighth place, and you did secure your sixth world championship, your ninth with Ferrari including the Constructors championship. Can you give us some final thoughts on the team and on those achievements?
MS: "First of all, I think it is very strange for me because most of my championships I have won with a victory and here and now today I am winning a championship with eighth position which is last of the points, but still winning the championship which is a mixed emotion. But what the team has achieved is just fantastic. If you see what has happened at Hockenheim, in Budapest, how many people wrote us off, how many people wrote things about us, outspoken things. And here we are, were back. We never give up, were always there, we always fight, and I think thats one of the big strengths of the Ferrari team. Everybody in Ferrari is that way. Its just a huge big family and we are all proud to be a part of it."

All is right with the world. Despite the rule changes and personal tragedy, MS and Ferrari once again regain their rightful position at the top of the F1 world. And does anyone doubt Reubens???
Of course, now I can't wait for the 2004 F1 season to start...

I really cant stand headlines like "Barrichello helps Schumacher to title number six" on F1-live.com.

So does this imply Kimi Raikkonen would have won if not for RB. NO. Of course he wouldn't. If RB was out of the race, KR would be 1st and MS 7th and he would still be World Champion. Coulthard held back and let KR into 2nd spot so he had a better chance. That is what team work is all about. In any case MS only needed an 8th spot to win.

What a buch of sissy crybabies who cant admit MS is the better driver. He worked damn hard up the field when bad weather had robbed him of a better starting spot on the grid. Good luck to him .....here's looking forward to title No.7.
