Bob:

I haven't figured out how to get enough money to buy something that goes over 300 kts. When I figure that out, I'll get one. The closest I could get would be an older C500SP, but the cost of operation of something like that would be over 15k per month, and since the Baron does 95% of what I need, and only costs 5k per month to run, I can't see spending another 120k per year for that 5%. Maybe I'll get one of those mass tort cases, settle it quickly, and get the plane: right, not to likely.

Marty!!!

I have nerves of steel and cat like reflexes, I can handle it!

Art, I've flown all over the world and only turned on the wing heat once or twice. Once you get over 300 kts, the ice just melts away!

Just talked to the guy who brought the plane back. Seems he had about 1 1/2 hours of light ice. didn't have to use the boots, but me being such a chicken, I'd have turned back.

Martin:

I need to talk to you soon, need an Oregon address. I'll give you a call in a couple of weeks. Hope things are well. Why aren't you flying down for the weekend of the 11th? If you would I'd give you a ride back in the Baron, since I'm going to Vancouver on the 14th. I know you don't like to fly, but just this once?

Byron;

That's what I get for taking a trip without enough time to wait out the weather. The Baron is de-iced, but I'm a big chicken when it comes to icing, even with the equipment. While I've owned the Baron for about 15 years, I've only HAD to use the boots to remove ice 2 times, and both were on the way to and from Europe in 1999, and there wasn't any choice. I never go where I suspect ice, and even if only light ice is forecast, I don't go. This time, there was light ice, and I didn't have to use the boots on the way to Sitka, but I didn't like it one bit.

It was fun, and it did show that if I'm forced, I can get it done.

I'd take the following route:

SFO, SGD Maxwell, RDD, oln, yyu, ann, lvd, pajnu.

That should work and would be the best flight plan up there, and the most direct.

That sounds pretty hair raising! What is the ceiling for the Beech Baron (assuming thats what you fly)?

Alaska flying is tricky! Ive done quite a bit of it in the sim, although Im sure its not as challenging as in real life. In fact, Im taking a trip this weekend with the sim (737-500) from KSFO-KSEA-PAKT-PAJN-PASI and finally to Anchorage. Should be fun :-)

Im in the process of planning the routes now but only have the first few legs done (although it might change depending on weather, STARS, and so on).

For SFO-SEA:
KSFO.CUIT2.RBL.FJS.UBG.OLM3.KSEA

For SEA-PAKT:
KSEA.BANGR2.TOU.J523.YZT.J502.PAKT

How does that routing look?

Sorry to kidnap the thread guys

On the way back from Alaska, despite the FAA telling me that there was no forecast for icing, there indeed was ice in the clouds. We left Juneau for Sita, and Ketchikan, and with the cloud tops at 16,000, could not get above the icing conditions. The freezing level was 7000, and the minimum in route altitude was 8000, putting us in the ice the entire trip. When we got to Sita (about 30 minutes from Juneau, we decided we'd go under the clouds. Sita had cloud bases at 3000' with 10 miles of visibility. The forecasted weather at Ketchikan was 2000 with 8 miles visibility. The forecast never indicated that the visibility enroute would be less than 3 miles, nor a lower ceiling than 2000'.

I decided to make the trip entirely over water, and although that lenghtened the trip, it proved a wise decision. In route, there were areas that were 3, 4 miles of visibility, with cloud bases of 1200', marginal VFR.

When we got to Ketchikan, the weather was nowhere near what the forecast predicted: 800 and about 1 mile visibility in rain showers, although to the side there was the legal 3 miles. There was an intrument approach, but I choice to go in VFR. It was interesting to say the least, and something I'll not repeat.

I made the decision to leave the plane there, come back commercial, and when the weather cleared to fly back up to get the plane. The FBO (Fixed base operator) while putting the plane in the hanger, damaged the nose gear (nothing serious, but it did require one part to be replaced). There was no one there who worked on Beech, so they ultimately had to fly my mechanic up with the part, and he repaired the plane.

I'll attend for the Saturday Lunch 12 to 4

I'm not going to do the Vegas

For the SB and Solvang
here's a suggestion:

From Vegas to Solvang area
on the way pass by and visit
Willow Springs International Raceway
We have half the day for open wheel
Formula type cars and the other
half for driving the track with
our own cars.

For those of you that are traveling from out of town and would like a place to stay in the Pasadena area, we have a negotiated rate with the Holiday Inn Express on 3500 Colorado Blvd. (A very generous FChatter is also the owner and is offering Ferrari Driving Club members a discounted rate for this event)

$49/night for a 2 bed suite with breakfast.

Please contact me if you require reservations.

Thanks!

I am coming into John wayne at around 8pm, I have a rental and since I am crashing at my brothers, I do need to spend a few minutes there other than sleeping :-) I figure fri night is the best to do the brotherly quality time.

TomD, What airport are you flying into and what is your arrival time?

You can ride with me for any drive that DES is driving with someone else (except I am not planning to drive to LV on Sat night). There will be plenty of other seats available also I'm sure.

We all look forward to you, DES and Martin (and any others that I missed) coming out for the weekend.

As of now, there isn't a drive planned for Saturday 7/12. We will all be meeting at the venue for a FDC launch party from 12-4... music, food, drinks, giveaways from sponsors, FDC Launch information, and best of all, everyone and their awesome cars!!

Vegas is on for sure.

Jordan - if you can make both sat and sun, that would be great! With or w/o the 'stang, your attendance is greatly appreciated. Sunny, your "co-pilot" will be up for it... I promise that! The sunday drive (it's been a while since we've had one, eh?)... should be spectacular.

DETAILS ARE FORTHCOMING. KEEP POSTED!! (We will send out official invitations, details early/middle next week!)

I plan to do all of them... My passenger might not be up for the Sunday drive after we get back from Vegas, but I know I'd like to if we get back early enough. I'll be joining the festivities late Friday night if any are going on. I couldn't get the day off, but they'll give me Monday.

Matt and I were just talking about this crazy plan this morning...haha

Friday night out is pretty much at the liberty of the individuals...
Sat Launch Party is a MUST GO...12-4p
Sat Vegas is after the party - probably a smaller group of 10-20 cars (overnighter)
Sun Drive to SB/Solvang is on as of now...

I don't plan to do everything... neither I nor my car can handle it, I don't think...LOL! We'll probably have some people split up depending on overall interest.

Byron, do I understand the plan correctly?

Friday night out on the town

Saturday drive and other stuff

Saturday to LV

Sunday return to LA

Sunday Santa Barbara/Solvang drive

Are all of these pieces in the plan? Do you or anyone plan to do all of them?

I'm dizzy and tired already just thinking about it.
