gents so if i buy a car and register it in Oregon i can "avoid" the additional CA state tax ? i use the term "avoid" as throughout most of the world "tax avoidance" is legal whereas "tax evasion" is not. |

Todd, that a BIG reason I want him to win. That looming license renewal tax increase is horrible. |

Register and use in Oregon for at least 91 days. Then if you decide to bring the vehicle into California, all you pay is the registration fees. Art |

Technically, you are supposed to pay various taxes on anything you sell. When you sell something on ebay ... the IRS would like you to report it as income! The State of California is trying to make up it's budget deficite by raising the car registration fees ("tax"). I avoided paying the used car sales tax, by NOT bring my "collector car" into the state for 90 days after purchase. Won't work for a car you buy here, however. It's all just another way of "paying the bills"! |

Gents Being a recent emigree to the US i was a little taken aback to find that we are all expected to pay sales tax on previously owned vehicles. I must be incredibly naive but doesnt this smack of double taxation as the tax was paid by the initial owner ? Having just bought the "everyday" car for family use and paying the new tax it came as shock to hear that even a "private" sale has the taxman here putting his hand in my back pocket. Growing up in Europe we were always told about how taxes were so much lower in the US so having recently relocated here to CA it has come as something of a shock to see just how deeply the taxman is into everything....having said that I couldnt think of anywhere else that I would rather live at the moment just wish that I could spend the extra $$$'s on the car and not throw it into some bottomless pit somewhere. |
