o.k. I'll do that. So you basically tap the brakes to get from 120 downshift to 3rd take the turn at perhaps 70 as you head up the hill?

billy bob:
the thing is, that corner off the back straight is really fast ( i take it in 3rd flat out). what i do is: lift where the pavement changes, brake moderatly and downshift one gear. after the crest brake some more, downshift again, turn in and get on the gas. i only really brake where the burm begins after the crest. hope that helps.

ps : next time we're out there, you should ride with me so you can see what i'm talking about.

Hubert,

On that back straight what is the secret to the braking zone? Do you slow the car and sacrafice some speed to make a smooth entry into the corner with power up the hill or do you late brake like hell (sometimes get a little out of shape) and the whip into the turn kinda hot and coast up the hill?

the car dynoed at 170hp and 140ft/lbs of tq.
It weighs 3000 lbs with me in it and a full tank of gas.
on the back straight i saw 120 before the braking zone.

Jordan
don't purchase a helmet just yet... go try on a few first... when you're ready, I have some good contacts for a helmet. You can try some on at Sube sports in HB (Hubert recommended). I would check out the following sites, too:

www.racerwholesale.com
www.saferacer.com
www.ogracing.com

Jordan the sa95 thing is a speedventures rule. Other clubs have more or less rules. For the most part you can't go wrong going sa2000 on the helmet. Then you can run with anyone. Racer wholesale are the cheap guys. Cars require all kinds of stuff depending on who you go out with and what class you are in. In general for most timetrial classes you need decent tires, no leaks, secure battery, good ball joints with no wheel play, solid brakes and brake lights...the stuff you want to be street worthy anyway. a minimum 1 layer driving suit is nice as it gives you about 15 seconds to get out of a burning car, a 2.5 lb fire extingusher within reach and bolted to the floor so it is not a projectile in your car. You need numbers and the hot ticket is to buy the 1 ft square white magnet stuff from pegasus racing and put the numbers on there so you can take the numbers on and off you car. This way you don't have to worry about your paint or do the masking tape numbers thing.

jordan: no mods neccessary. just make sure your brake fluid is fresh, there's plenty of material left on your brake pads, and that your tires have in excess or 3/32nd's of material. Beyond that , you'll need a helmet, M95 or SA 95 or newer. Full face or 3/4 is up to you. You'll want to bring extra oil, brake fluid and coolant, but that's about all you'll need.

I had a great time as well. Buttonwillow is one of the best track around and the event organization was perfect. I stayed for both days, totaling about 7h of track time.

Thanks for the pictures. I did not take any but recorded a few sessions from the car the previous day.

The first one is kind of funny. I was chasing a viper, he eventually let me by but I somewhat ran out of track before the end of the pass, leading to a pretty good spin.

http://acw-com.activeserverhosting.com/cars/bw082303/HWFM.WMV

The second one is a clean lap on Saturday.

It was great to meet all of you.

Great pictures! If I come to the next track day, would someone give me a ride on a few laps?

Byron, glad your car is up and running!

Hey Hubert, what are the rules for taking a street car (such as my Mustang) on the track? Would I need to do any mods to it? Next summer after some of my driving courses, I want to start trying out the track :-)

A fantastic weekend at Buttonwillow it was! For all you who enjoy the "spirited drives" this is the next level. Before hitting Buttonwillow I'd suggest either riding along with a few experienced pros or taking the instruction class just to learn the track; it's a challenging course no doubt. My Lotus ride-along was INCREDIBLE thanks to our new friend AW (still smilling ear to ear, and I promise I wasn't scared) and John from Speedventures was kind enough to show me what a race-preped Z06 can do (Jeeezzzus!)

I was very proud of all our guys out there running hard in the blistering heat, Byron's showing some nice lines, Arick is fearless especially in the dirt, Carl's confident and smooth, Andrew likes the dirt too, and Hubert showing his experienced Buttonwillow chops ;) I think it's time for an official Ferrari Driving Club meets Buttonwillow track event. Oh and...don't forget to schedule a massage after the big racing day...

Woo hoo! What a day!!
It was a warm, breezy day at Buttonwillow yesterday, but I think all who went can agree that we had a blast!

Those who were there:
me (348 Challenge)
Carl (348tb)
Hubert (Prelude)
Andrew (Integra GS-R)
Arick (Eclipse)
Ricky (360 Modena)

Very fun day - great runs... no major mishaps... a little dust never hurts ;). Amanda took some great shots - I took a few too... will post up pictures later on. Amanda... bring the Z06 next time! :-)

Awesome!

Billy Bob: Sorry, I didn't see your post until now, regarding toe settings.

I run ~ 3/8" TOTAL toe OUT in the front, and about 1/16" TOTAL toe IN on the rear.

Toe out up front makes turn in a little crisper, and when you load up the front under braking, its plants the fronts flat. If you can see it in your head; if the wheels are point "out" a little unloaded, when you put load on them, they'll be pointing "straight" under load. Too much toe up front though, and yuo'll really eat up tires; if youre looking for cripser turn in, you may want to adjust your castor settings. Also, if youre looking for more grip through the corner, try to add some camber.

The rear , with it's toe IN, aids in higher speed stability, by keeping the car planted since the wheels are pointing "in" it keeps them from getting loose. That , in addition to keeping the rear planted when it gets light under braking... when you load up the front , the rear gets light, and the rear wheels (w/ toe in) will straighten out, giving you maximal contact b/w the tire and the road.

There's a good section on alignment and to in fred puhns "how to make your car handle" i can fax it to you, if you like.

About the trailer space... I"m not sure. I 've seen people in there with tow hitches, but not full out trailers... there's room on the street though. Don't take my word for it.

Hubert,

Is that motel 6 trailer friendly? Are the rest of you guys going staurday and sunday or just sunday? What group are you guys running? Hubert...do you have any comments on toe-in or toe-out alignments? Some guys think turn in is better with a bit of toe out. Personally I never see any readon to do anything with toe other than stock generally toe-in. Toe-outs give funny high speed stability too. What do you think?

Try the corkscrew on a bike, a fast bike. makes the car feel very slow. If I fly down to the local airport (about 2, 3 miles away) on the 24th would you pick me up? You've got my cell number, I think.

Just checked the site last night - if you want to avoid late fees, you will need to register at least 10 days before, which means 8/13.

For those interested, I will probably be there with my 348CH on 8/24.

I know Hubert is in... and possibly Beth. Gene, Jonathan, anyone else?

jordan: yah, the "corkscrew" is really really fun. Right after the crest you feel the car jsut get sucked down; you can see how much load the suspension sees at that point (for reference I'm running 600lbs front springs and 450lbs rears.) Look at the amount of load. My car is not set that low. And it all happens in seconds.

Hubert, I know of speedventures and know of this event... if I am in town that weekend, it would be fun to attend. I will need to double check to see if my car is in good running order by then. I believe Beth (new owner of a 348tb in San Diego) was planning on doing this event as well - looks like you may have a few ride-along instruction opportunities ahead of you!

Speedventures is holding an event that weekend. Running configuration #1 CW on saturday, and configuration #25 CCW on sunday. I'll be there on saturday because I need more time running the track CW; ran it CCW the last 3 times. Anyway, you ALL should come out!!! No excuses. Byron! It's a weekend, c'mon. Adam, I know your starting to hit the "go fast crack pipe" So, c'mon you know you wanna.

Info:
www.speedventures.net

Instructors will be available, but I'll gladly give anyone a ride (in my car) and show you my version of the line (whatever that's worth.) Lodging is cheap (40/night at the motel 6 by the carls jr.-- right off the 5, about 19 miles south of the track), and it's best to go up the night before -- to get plenty of sleep.
