Algar Ferrari charged me 200 for a ppi on my 308. No compression test. Didn't ask for one.

Michael,

Blackhorse Motors charged me $300 to PPI a 308, and that included a leakdown, electrical test of alternator, battery, etc. and all the other stuff.

The dealers in L.A. get 4 hours min. at $125 = $500 without a Comp. Check. Add 2 hours for comp and it's $750. This for a v-8, probably more for a v-12. Similar hours at an independent, but labor rates run $75-95/hour....FYI. They check the exaust gas upstream of the cat's and that really tells the story about engine condition...comp. check/leakdown not really necessary if the car has correct exaust gas makeup, and makes good power.

I just sold an S500 coupe which went to the local MB dealer for a PPI and an inspection for frame damage due which involved using alignment racks, etc. due to the car having been in a prior accident some years ago.

Total cost $ 275 CAD including road test time. A compression test (not deemed necc) would have been another $ 150 CAD.

So......$ 300 USD for everything.

Yes.....$ 760 USD seems ridiculious. It's a Ferrari...but it's also a car and not "that" special.

I heard a leakdown is where they fill the cylinder with air (under pressure) when it starts its compression stroke & then see if it loses pressure to indicate leaky valves. But, this is only what I heard...

what is a leakdown? i'm guessing is it where the valves are filled with oil to check the seal? wouldn't the compression check show that?

The estimated hours was 8, so that's a little less than $100 per hour. Without the leakdown & compression test the quote was $380.

A leakdown & compression test doesn't take 4 hours!

Alfa of Tacoma by Carlo Durante is first rate and a heck of a lot more reasonable. Maybe if you explain the urgency, he'll fit you in.

He did my PPI within a week (I was flying in from out of town to see the car) and was very thorough.

You can also try Specialty Cars in Bellevue, Graham is my mechanic and is well respected. (425) 451-3536 As with Carlo, he can be booked up but worth a call.

Ron,
I am in the local Seattle FCA region. Ferrari of Seattle does good work, but that does seem a bit high for a 308 PPI. I had a PPI with leakdown/compression test done at Alfa of Tacoma by Carlo Durante, the owner for around $375. He was very thorough in his report. 253.572.2532 The big problem is that he is constantly back logged with Ferraris and Lambos by about 6-8 weeks. He is also closes down the last two weeks of Sept to make his annual trip to Ferrari SPA in Italy for "continuing education/workshops". Give him a try, maybe he can fit you in...

Another possibility is Ray Segale at British/Italian Auto Center. 206.325.7233 unfortunately, he only works in Seattle ONE WEEK per month! Spends the other three in Sun Valley, ID....nice life. He knows 308's real good, used to work when FoS was known as Grand Prix Motors....actually so did Carlo, they worked their together.

The technical term I was given was "buyer's inspection". I assume this is the same thing as a ppi. As far as what they are checking exactly, I'm not sure. The estimated hours was 8, so that's a little less than $100 per hour. Without the leakdown & compression test the quote was $380.

If there is some sort of guaranty with that $750 it might be worth it. Otherwise it seems like a lot. Has anyone ever had a great running ferrari that didn't smoke fail a leakdown/compression test? Hopefully you've driven it and can compare it to other similar cars.
The $750 PPI might be worthwhile if you are trying to use it to drop the purchase price-"FOS says it needs 5K in deferred maintenance" and can expect to get something out of that line of argument. Otherwise find some local person through the seattle f-club. Have you tried calling Tonkin in Portland? They may know someone closer to you.

Ask what their rate is per hour. If it is $100/hr for Ferrari labor I would make damn sure they spent every bit of the 7.6 hours in the car.

ron:

I'd want to know what their doing for the inspection. They may well save you money in the long run, if they are doing more than just looking at the car.

Jeez

you are buying a Ferrari and you think mechanics will give you a break? Have you ever had a quote for $2000 for a heads-off-the-block valve job? For comparison, a similar V8 valve job is $195.

I once had a compression check for a Porsche 911 done for ... $50. I now do it for myself.

I thought this was a bit much too. Does anyone know a place I can get one done in Seattle other than FoS ??

I paid $250 to Ferrari of Scottsdale for a PPI without compression leakdown tests on a 328. The dealer said that unless omething indicated otherwise on a car with under 30k miles compression tests were not necessary

Am I naive, or does this seem to be a little "pricey". It's for a 308 including the leakdown & compression tests.
