Jon
There were every type of 911 I remember including Bob Akins COKE LeMans monster. I saw a ton of BMW's as well. 700 racecars one cooler than the next.
Andrew
As Marvin and Tamy sang:"Ain't nothing like the real thing." Bennie still has his LM. He sold his GTE to Aus.

Hi James, just going thru some of my older pix, and I came across this one of J6 I took @ Greenwich back in June 2002. Always looking sharp - enjoy!

PS - I'm seriously looking fwd to the official P4 unveiling.

Andrew,

Not sure. I didn't want to pry so I didn't ask. Benny had his 333SP and his LM car at the Glen. I have about an hour of video footage of his two cars from two different run sessions that I hope to have up on my website late this week.

Andrew,

I was there in 2000 when Benny put that car into the wall at the Glen in turn 10. I spoke to him last week at the FCA event and he has since sold the car. I guess it's hard to find the time to drive all those F cars.

Jim,

You just named half my top ten list of race cars (917/30, 962/956, Alfa 1933-T33, GT40). Any 911 2.7 RS cars or RSR's or maybe my favorite BMW the 3.5 CSL Batmobile??

I think it would be the GTP cars more than anything else that would be my main interest along with the 60's and early 70's LeMans cars.

I still miss the Group C and IMSA days. I know it was not going to be financially feasible for Group C to continue but what a show they put on in Europe and the States.

Regards,

Jon

Jim,

I tried all week to talk the wife into going along with the three kids but being there a week earlier for the FCA event my wife was a bit tired of cars. If I had planned it properly I would have just spent the entire week in between and then seen the VSRA event.

I would have had to purchase about a dozen memory cards for my digital camera at that event.

If you have a few extra interesting pictures from the event please post them.

What interesting cars besides your MK-IV? Any Maserati Birdcage cars present (my favorite)??

Next year I am planning to attend.

Jon

What a weekend the VSRA Donohue GP was. Amazing cars and people. 700 racers, the Pensky Team members, the guys who built the MK-IV's. Jon this is the type of event you would LOVE.

I just received word via email from Dennis that Andy Herrala, who broke his neck at the Glen last Friday is recovering after surgery and appears to have suffered no permanent paralysis.

FCA Empire State Region wish him a speedy recovery.

Greg,

I have cut and edited several videos and made a highlight clip that will be uploaded next week. Much of it contains footage of Benny's 333 and F40 LM as well as Bill Jennnings Michelotto F360 GT car.

I only briefly saw Paul and Jim Wilson on Friday and Saturday. We were in different run groups and at diferent ends of the garage so did't have much opportunity to chat.

I didn't see Paul or Jim on Sunday, hope everything went ok for them.

Regards,

Jon

Jon, looks like it was a very good weekend. Good to see some different cars there. Let me know when you have your video footage converted...I'd love to see it.

I need to call Paul and find out how his weekend went.

Matt,

Consider Jeff Gordon's response at Indy this past Summer when he got to within a second of Juan Pablo Montoya's time in the Williams FW24 F1 car. He said sure he got close but that LAST SECOND would take monumental work to achieve.

Thanks for the compliments but after riding with you last year 3 1/2 seconds still seems like a different planet.

I had a best of 2:08.65 before you gave me all those things to work on. I didn't run the camcorder the last session (tape was full) but I think a bit later braking, some fiddling with the wing, and your turn in advice in T10 must have been worth a few tenths so maybe 2:08.5. Will post some video of the event in a few days including the 2:08 lap.

Maybe you, Dinah and Chris can come down in October for the FCA event at Summit. It's a Saturday/Sunday event so you won't miss work. Maybe you can coax Dinah into letting you take one last spin so we can dice at Summit. It looks like the Trackmasters event will be cancelled as the new track isn't finished. Last chance Pal, I'll never see you in the TA car!

Any word from Bob C. on the driver's condition. Car didn't look all that bad but I heard he hit both guardrails.

Dinah,

Nothing Chris does amazes me anymore. I think he could rebuild an entire engine in a day. What amazed me most was that he had everything (parts) in his trailer. I am fully expecting him to pull an entire spare trans out some day.

Get down here for the FCA event and talk Matt and Chris into coming down to. Should be a good event.

I am going to try and make the Trackmasters Oct. 1st/2nd event for one last crack at the Glen for the year. Hope you all can make it.

Regards,

Jon

Jon,

Great recap! #8 was the highlight. Let's add to the list:

#12: Watching Chris disassemble the outer left-rear corner to replace the CV joint, and have the whole job done in 1.5 hours, while some of the other owners stood around, mouths agape, at the fact that he did it himself.

#13: me finding out, after an hour under my car, that the coolant leak was just a loose hose (and getting VERY dirty in the process...wanted to shoot the guy with the video camera!)

Dinah

P.S. Pls send me that pic you took and I'll let you know if it merits posting :-)

Nice Jon,
you guys must have had great fun up there.
Bad accident is never nice to hear. Hope he/she is alright!

William,
you can catch me at Maranello Madness :-) Every 2nd lap you will be catching me, unless I get some more practice in the car. Just 3 more days and we'll be running again.

I have to go on record regarding something....

Jons comments about my driving are very flattering, and I thank him for that. I guess I can fool some of the people some of the time.

What Jon doesn't say (understandably so) I how fast of a driver he is. Turning 2:08's on a track he goes to once or twice a year, is a great display of talent. Seeing how 2:05 is the track record in a 355 Challenge Car, 2:08 is a very formidable time.

Summit Point is another matter all together. Jon is blazing fast there. It's too bad that I don't have my 355 Challenge Car anymore, as I would have loved to try to dice with Jon there.

So....don't let that humble southern boy Jon fool you guys with his 'aw shucks' approach to his driving skills.

And Jon.....as long as I don't have my 355 anymore, I'll swap track secrets any day with you.

As I understand it they're going to shut the old course through the town for the Donohue cars to drive on Fri. There will be quite a group of cars and drivers including Mark's 512M and his 930-17. should be great.

James,

A very nice gentleman named Adam owns the 962 and the Tiga Ferrari. He and his dad, Steve, will be at the same event. Adam races both cars in the historic series.

Ought to be a great event. I heard they will even have a race (parade laps?) through the old section of town in Watkins Glen where they used to race.

Great weekend and perfect way to end the summer!!!

F Chatters Paul Prideaux, Dennis (Bighead) Lui, Dinah D., Matt K., and Solly were all in attendance.

Great line up of cars as well including a pair of 333s, F40LM, Jeff Ipollitis 355 GT car, Porsche 962, Tiga Camel Lights Ferrari, Jaguar Trans Am car (which Mr. Karson took for spin), Corvette Trans Am car (which blew its engine), Porsche Super Cup car, The NASCAR truck mafia, and the usual assortment of Challenge cars and street Ferraris.

The winner of best car award had to go to Bill Jennings awesome 360 GT car.

Weather cooperated for the most part with occasional drizzle. Only one bad accident to report but unfortunately its not known if the drivers is ok as last report had him at Rochester hospital with a broken neck. My prayers are with him and his family.

Key highlights:

1) Finally breaking into the 2:08s with Matts help. Something tells me he isnt going to be as forthcoming with his speed secrets if I keep lopping a second off my times every time he goes out for a ride with me. Not to worry MattIll quit at 2:07 if I ever get there. Well chalk the other 2-second gap down to talent (which you seem to have no shortage of).

2) Getting some great video footage of the F40 LM and 333SP as I spent a complete session behind each of them. Both cars were slow through the corners but fast on the straights. Didnt mind being behind them though as that sound is flat out incredible as is the acceleration. Man if only I had another 300 hp lying around.

3) Sharing garage space with all the crew from John Tirells Independent Ferrari Service including Dennis, John Tirell, Joe Capasso, and Peter Lambardi. All driving 355Cs except Dennis who brought the 996 out to play.

4) Playing chicken with Dennis going side by side through the esses and passing and getting repassed by John Tirell in his 355 C. It was getting somewhat competitive out there with all of us running around trying to figure out what tire pressure the other guy was running. I caught John taking my cod tire temps early Saturday morning and John even started fiddling with his wing to take out downforce so he could pull a few car lengths on us.

5) Talking with Adam about his awesome IMSA 962 Turbo.

6) Seeing Bill Jennings zoom by me at an estimated 170 mph in his 360 GT on the back straight and taking Benny Ciaolas 333SP to the 200 ft marker. All I could think about was about $2 million in damage. I was thinking there is no way Bill is ever going to make the bus stop but somehow he kept the car in line correcting a huge side and leaving Benny and I after three or four corners. Great driving Bill.

7) Seeing Dinah grin all day when getting out of her 355 Challenge car, which by the way I am convinced is not Matts Karsons old car. Way too clean!!!!

8) Seeing Matts grin after they closed down the track for him so he could take a fully fledged Jaguar Trans Am car for a few laps. And here I thought Matt might start crying seeing his old Challenge car in the garage. I dont think he even blinked at her after that TA ride. It wasnt long until I overheard Matts Squidracing teammate complaining about, all I am going to be hearing about the next six months is Trans Am this, Trans Am that..

9) On the first warm-up lap on Saturday there were about six 355 Challenge cars bunched up in the carousel when Joe Capassos Challenge car violently spun around, barely missing three of us and thankfully spinning into the grass with no damage (later inspection showed his gas cap was leaking).

10) Apparently Solly saw the guys from Classic Coach all sitting around with nothing to do and decided to give something to do. Solly had a little bit of an agricultural excursion (read his post about getting better turn in by running slicks in the rain) in T10. And Sollyjust do what I do when the bill arrivesDONT READ IT. Just give them your credit card number!

11) Other than Matts fast laps in the Trans Am Jaguar those damn car costs us about four sessions. I dont think it was until Sunday that the Jag was able to complete a lap. The Corvette blew its engine up Friday. Matt. might want rethink the TA car or at least get a crew that doesnt look like the local staff at your neighborhood AutoZone.

All around great event run by Empire State Regions Bob Coates, Chris Sarkasian and Matt Karson.

By the way you all will be happy to know that I was consistently faster than Matt all day Friday and Saturday. One Sunday I must have passed Matt at least a dozen times. Of course he wasnt there on either Friday or Saturday and the dozen or so passes on Sunday took place while he was standing in the pits.

Folks if havent been to the Glen and you consider yourself a track junkie make the trip. The Empire State Region puts on one hell of an event every year around Labor day and its worth the trip. The Glen has to be one of the best east coast tracks on par with Road America and Road Atlanta. Ive attended this event for four straight years and every year it gets better and bigger. Last two years we have had nearly 100 cars.

Pictures are posted below and some great video footage will be up in about a week.

Next up is Pocono.185 mph coming out of the banked oval.Yeeeehaw!!!!!!!

Regards,
