A good customer of mine owns a 288 GTO, F40 and F50 (amongst others) and regularly tracks his cars.

He was hesitant to buy an Enzo as "where does it stop?" so in the end he said "No" to the Enzo.

A couple of weeks later he regretted his decision, called the factory (he has very strong ties with them) and said he changed his mind.

Sorry, sold out...

Couple of weeks later: the factory calls him, we managed to find you one!

He took delivery last weekend and he LOVES it!

Calls it the ultimate combination of the F40 & F50.

F40 always was faster accelerating in straight line where the roadholding of the F50 was superior to that of the F40.

The Enzo is faster in straight line than the F40 AND has a better roadholding than the F50!

He's a happy camper now and has an extra set of wheels on order for slick tires so he can track the Enzo without having to worry about street tires.

Tracked his F50 on street tires when it was new and wore them out in 600 miles. Apparently the mould for the left front tire had a crack and that tire was NOT available until a new mould was made.

He had to wait 3 months for a new set of tires... brand new F50 sitting in the garage waiting for tires was VERY frustrating so now it's slicks for him when he tracks the Enzo!

YAHOO! WAY TO GO!

And YES, he did promise me a track ride when I'm in the USA next time...

GRINNNNNNNNNNNNN

:-D

Ow... almost forgot the reason why I wanted to write a reply here...

He told me he had noticed a rise in F50 prices because collectors want to have the set of 4 Great F Cars complete (288 GTO, F40, F50 & Enzo).

Did any of you notice the same?

Art Astor also has an enormous collection and most are of the classic domestic variety along with his radio collection. There is a second hangar where some other cars are stored and its here where he was keeping his modern favorites. No F-cars that I can remember, though.

interesting subject...let me ask you this : What % of F40,F50 or Enzo owners actually bought the car to use it for what it was built for...driving performance.1%...5%...?
So how do you classify the other 95% ?
We are constantly looking in the US ( and world ) for supercar owners who actually drive their cars...very very very very rare rare...especially in the US. In fact I dare to say that there are more supercar owners in Japan who really drive their cars than in the US.

Guys, half the stuff these guys say is designed to make it into copy. Many if not most of them are hardcore enthusiasts. Relatively few buy them to lock them up.

Marconi might have said that he bought two F50s to be different, but he and his son used them. A fair amount. Now, looking at their collection, a fair amount still means relatively few miles on each car, but they certainly did use them well and enjoy them a lot. Still do.

Marconi is a proper hardcore enthusiast. He was on TV the other day, talking about his cars, and he talked the most about his racing XJ220 and F50s. Sorry, don't remember any details on the program, only caught the last 15 minutes or so.

Rgds,
Faisal.

Lets face it John Suarez the Enzo was made for this sort of BS.

Like I have said before a wonderful car the Enzo may be ... I still cannot understand why Ferrari made it. We do not need a street car like that ... what a waste of natural resources!

Now a genuine Le Mans challenger, that is what Ferrari should have built IMO ... not an ego flexing trophy.

From my understanding Marconi got both his F50s for about the asking price of one at most dealerships. So yes, for ~730k most people can buy one, somehow he got two for the money.

Who's Marconi?

A guy in SoCal who has an awesome car collection that is open to the public. See this thread for more info and a link to the museum.

So what's the problem , he bought it because he can. When Marconi bought his two F 50's he told me , heck anybody can buy just one.

As for the comment that in 10 years the car will only have 1500 miles, for me what 's worse than that is sportscar owners who have tires that last over 6 months .

Perhaps we should find twins, or clones, take the same trip, Giallo 550B vs. Giallo F50, and see who had a better time! :-)

I want to read the whole interview to make a judgement on this guy. He may said this as joke for all I know here.

I honest believe there's a person like this in the US, too. The subject may not be Enzo, but Nike shoes, some clothes, jewerly, etc. Main point is whether you can afford it or not. I remember when I was in 20's, I couldn't understand people spending $200,000 for a car. Now I can at least understand.

BTW, what this guy said about driving Enzo?

Mais qu'est ce qu'on faire en Paris? Rien. Of course, the drive to St. Tropez... :-)

Yes, you were fundamentally wrong in your choice of 550B. F50 topless is a better choice. Giallo con Nero. Nero Con Nero? I am undecided. :-)

Dan it depends if you already a red F40, a red 288 GTO and a red Enzo , then its gotta be a red F50. But If its just an F50 , i would go with yellow :-)

BTW thanks for asking ..you can ship it to Paris !

I don't think he actually says the car is just going to sit. Granted, he's buying it for the wrong reason; however, if you read it closer, "...while my friends owned and drove one." Sounds like he's going to drive it to be seen in it. Guys like this would likely show up to meet his friends in the Enzo just in case they drove theirs...so they don't get shown up.

My 1982 Boxer had 12k miles on it when I bought it in December 2002. When I had the 30k service done it had a lot of dried out seals that needed replacement as well as all the water hoses. I have also had to replace a bad driveshaft seal, CV joint boots and fusebox all because of age. The previous owner had to replace the shocks in 1999 also due to age. Age deteriorates a car more than miles.

In defense of Japan here, having lived both there for 3 yrs and here in the US for 2+ yrs now and been active in Fast car circles. There is a very similar dichotomy in car collector circles. There are both the people that stick their cars in a museum and never drive, but also those that stick every mile they can on their car.

Just round the corner from where I lived in Tokyo was a guy that had a street 355 covered in stickers for Brakes, Dampers etc. I regularly saw him on the street with it & even followed him onto the expressway. Lord knows what he had as an exhaust (I assume straight pipes), but everytime he downshifted for slow traffic a large burst of flame came from all 4 pipes! (and yes I was chasing him in my car!)

In my experience cars have a funny way of pulling together enthusiasts from different cultures.

And lets face it of the 399 Enzos how many anywhere in the world are really going to get driven hard? I know my 360 CS is going to get a some serious use, but I think this is the first extreme F-car since the f40 where this will happen to a good proportion of the cars made. This to me is purely a factor of the number made, and who can purchase them.

Mark, all very well said. I once read the book "Bluff your way into Japan.". Kinda confirms your statements and then some.

Also have to fully agree with Frank.

Compare that to the guy who was recently in one of the car mags with his Enzo, who is making a point out of driving it daily etc. We need more Glickenhaus guys and less collectors!

I love Japan. It is so hard for me to think like they do. It is such an interesting social fish bowl. I watch in bewilderment and fascination every time Japanese issues come along.

There seems to be an opposite set of values from the one's I grew up with. I was raised to respect the- Maverick, Creativity, Rebellion, and Individualism.

Honor, Obedience, fitting in...these are the traits the Japanese seem to hold in the highest regard. And brand name an celebrity worship is out of control in Japan.

This Enzo story makes so much sense in Japan. Honor and esteem before Logic or reason.

I would have self-destructed if I were born in Japan.

I haven't posted here in a few weeks, but this really pressed my buttons.

Here is a quote from the bridgestone website. It is from an interview they did with a new Enzo owner. Sounds pretty pathetic to me.

You be the judge!
-----------------------------------------------
The Enzo owner who lives in Nagoya is the man who got hold of one of the first five Enzos registered in Japan. Why he continues to buy special Ferraris starting with " F40" and "F50"? How did he feel when he first drove Enzo?

"Well, to be honest, Enzo Ferrari is not a car anyone can buy just because one decides to buy it. First of all, one must qualify for it. You may call it a sense of competition among the fellow Ferrari fans. I bought the car because some of my friends decided to buy it, and I succumbed to the temptation to buy the car because I simply could not tolerate the situation of me not having Enzo while my friends owned and drove one."
