Don't fall into that old trap, the car may have L as first owner, many probably leave the factory like that, its a renowned way of shifting what are effectively 'new' cars at less than retail, it allows companies to hold the normal retail price hard for zero owner cars. Most if not all manufacturers use this ploy. Luca probably never even smelt the leather in the car let alone drive it.

Ross,

Don't buy a F-car if you don't like the color.
I reckon this is the first priority! You either love it or hate it.
Just get another one with the right color for yourself.

My two penny.

550's are not an investment, but great fun to drive. The provenance won't add much to its already plummeting value, so if you don't like the car enough to spend that kind of money on it for its intrinsic "worth" to you, don't rationalize it on the basis of its possible value to others. I don't think its there.

Buy the car you love and want. Period. If the market crashes you will be stuck with it -- which car would you love being stuck with???

Let's see...

You don't like the color, don't have anywhere to put it and you don't even like the model.....

The first owner was Ferrari. Big deal. They own every car first, really. The driver was Luca, kinda cool. However, I'm sure he was probably designated to drive any darn car he wanted. It wasn't titled in his name.

I say don't bother with it. Although, the service was probably done right during the 1st ownership....

i went to see and drive a 456m that i am thinking of buying. the dealer is a bentley dealer who took the car in exchange for an azure. parked next to the 456m was a '99 550 in a sort of dark red/burgundy color with a dark tan daytona interior. it was a 2 owner car, had about 15k miles on the clock and in perfect shape. also a trade-in. the interesting thing is that the first owner was ferrari spa with designated driver luca di montezemolo ! the price on the car was 130k euros, which i think is cheap, and they would probably give another 5k off that. so here is the quandary:
do i stretch to buy a car
- that i don't particularly like the color of (its not bad but i prefer them in silver or grey)
- that i don't really need or have anywhere to put (it will be hard enough to find space for the 456m)
- that i don't want in terms of the model (was eventually thinking of getting a used 575, not a 550)

just because its cheap and was owned by the second most popular man at ferrari, and i think that someday this could be a valuable thing?

pls note that i am not normally a car 'flipper'. i tend to buy what i like and hang on to it.
