No - it was neither Paul Allen nor Larry Ellison. The guy was pretty laid back, very friendly, but knew nothing about the car. He'd had it trucked directly from Andial where it had been serviced, but the RE71's were on backwards. I asked him if that was supposed to be that way (it just so happens I had RE71's on my MGB at the time) and he didn't know the tires were even directional. He called Andial, they said no, our mistake, switch the tires around before you track the car. He didn't know how to get the wheels off, didn't know there was a special torque wrench for removing the lug, where to find it etc. He pulled out the owners manual and looked it up and said, "wow - you know a lot about this car - could you change the tires around for me?" So I did - the other mechanics were all snickering at me "be careful jacking up that million-dollar car - make sure you hit the jack points..."

Adam: is that Larry Ellison CEO of Oracle?

What's the difference between Larry Ellison and GOD?

God knows he's not Larry Ellison.

ya i remember those "u.s." spec 959 sports, they were supposed to be for racing only but when they got here customs saw the full interiors with carpets and full leather covered rollcages and they went nuts!!!i think they actually confiscated bill gates car for a little while because apparently someone saw him driving it in seattle.it took many years but now you can import them for "show and display" with a 2500 miles a year limit.btw i think all the sport versions are either guards red or grand prix white.and yes before that otis chandlers red 959 sport was the only one allowed in the country for display in his museum, i think they gave the car a 10 year visa!

Will FNA even honor a warranty on a Euro-spec car that is brought over and driven here? This joker claims he can "get them what they want with warranty".

If he is "selling like crazy", how come there is no current bids on his EBAY sale?

Philip has been IM-ing me ever since I sent him the e-mail. Tells me he's selling cars like crazy. Says he's looking for some 996 Turbos, so I put him in touch with our sales mgr. Let's see if he's for real or not. Actually, he sounds like he's the real deal to me, even if a little funny (Mixx Master!). We'll see.

I talked to the guy today. his name is Philp and he just moved here(New Orleans) from the north east. He said there is not enough business here so he is moving to the northwest.

The car is in Germany!

Still trying to figure out what the purpose of his link pictures are.
My guess: An elementary school geography teacher who likes to hang out at shipping yards in New Orleans watching freight being unloaded by big cranes and collects 1/18 scale car models.
Anyone else care to guess?

Chris, like I said, there are other 959's here now after the "Bill Gates" law. I've heard that DOT has actually staked out both Mr. Gates and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as they have both brought 959's into the country. Was it Mr. Allen you saw at the track?

Anyway, I was curious about this e-bay listing so i sent the guy an e-mail. I think I touched a nerve or two. Here's his response:

"Very simple...
1. I have access to inexpensive Ferrari 360 spiders.
2. They are inexpensive to the US, because I don't mark them up 100%
3. I only take a small commission for the coordination of delivery to the US From time of purchase to delivery. Im not selling the Ferraris Im showing people how to get them what they want with warranty CHEAP! Most retail customers dont have the time to handle this process. My total commission is 5k I coordinate everything.
4. Pictures. Well, im only to let people know that there is an actual buisness and a real person to handle this for them. All my friends make fun, so go ahead and throw a FEW PUNCHES.
5. Mixx master. That was a tag I had made for my lotus exige. Just for fun. I have a hobbie of making electronic music. Mixx Master.
Hope I answered your questions. Maybe we can do some buisness.
Philip
Oh, Exige? They are legal in the US! 959 do your homework! unscrupulous? One more thing, so you know that I am for real. take a look at this.... Will be featured in Millionaire Magazine next month. Any more questions that the community might have?"

This was followed by a full page ad he has appearing in Millionaire Magazine for the MBenz CLK GTR Roadster. It's too large too post here (and a waste of space) but it looks professional. Oh yeah, and of course it has his picture in it!

Interesting, Wayne. I'm sitting here looking at a picture of Otis Chandler and I don't think that's the guy who came to the track (it was in 1991 and I'm sure the guy with the 959 said he was from San Francisco - the gentileman was probably about 50 and he had a goatee if memory serves. I mostly remember the car!) Anyhow, it was a silver 959L with a blue interior and he had never driven it before, he had it trailered to the track and showed up himself in a black Carrera 4. I remember him telling me that the DOT had a stakeout at his house for a few weeks after he initially took delivery of the car because they were convinced he'd take it for a spin around the block.

Chris, regarding his comments on the 959. There were 27 cars made for the U.S., intended as road cars, and referred to by Porsche as the "racing" version as opposed to the Euopean "comfort" version.

When the first 8 cars arrived, however, 7 were sent back to Germany by customs (Porsche had not provided cars for crash testing). The other 19 cars remained in Europe where their new owners could take delivery and use them. Most, however, were just sold off to Europeans. The 1 car that was allowed in the U.S. went to Porsche aficianado Otis Chandler and was allowed in for "display purposes only." It's now at the Otis Chandler Museum here in California.

Other cars have been brought in to the U.S. since under the "Bill Gates" law, but are only allowed on the street for limited use (travel to and from display/show). For more info on this law see:

Here's a new idea for a FerrariChat contest. Use Photoshop to convert this guy into anything.

Example:

Clown
Devil
Pimp
An Oompa Lompa (from Willy Wonka & the chocolate factory)

Maybe Rob Lay will throw out some sort of prize for the best idea. Just an idea.

Hey Chris:
Was the 959 guy at Seca doing a article for a Excellence magazine? I recall a story last year where they had Danny Sullivan tested a fleet of turbo Pcars including a private 959. Was a great read. I'd have to agree with you... this guy's business is questionable.

this guy's a total liar. Look at his other auction. You CAN'T register any of those Loti in the USA for street use. He also says,

"Porsche 959 special modell "US Racing version" (for road use) built only 27units, this car has No. 18, red, roll bar, Radio Cassette, first date of registration 29.09.1989, approx. 11.000 miles"

There's no such thing as a road legal 959 in the US. When I worked at Laguna Seca a billionaire rented the track (and one of our instructors) for three days so he could drive his REAL 959 around. I talked to him about it - he said that for almost a year the DOT was looking for any excuse to confiscate his car and destroy it because they had such a bug up their ass about the 959. He told me that they actually showed up with a tow truck once because someone had been spotted driving around SF in a fake 959 and they thought it was him (he had to sign a form on importing it swearing he'd never drive it on the street in the USA).

Posting pictures of himself is a old trick scam artists use. It makes people feel more confortable with the transaction. After all, they know what they look like! (that's going to do them a lot of good) Heck, it could be photos of anybody.
