If anyone wants to see the craziest exhaust ever made for a 360 check out, koenig-specials.com and look at the 6 pipe exhaust

You are right, new Ferraris are quite quiet (nice words) and of course for environmental reasons.
The EU noise regulations require the cars to be at a max. noiselevel. Part of the certification process is driving a car past noise measuring equipment at a certain speed and distance.
As far as I am told, this speed corresponds to approx. 2800 RPM on a 360, and that is funny enough ecaxtly where the bypass is still closed.
If this is true, one function of the bypass is to keep the noise level legal.
Beating the system, you might say.
What other functions it might have, I don't know.

Kurt,

The new Ferrari's are quite different in the sound department. Have you heard a 550 lately?

The 360 is really not bad but both the Fuchs and Tubi make it sound more like older Ferrari's.

Bret,

Take a look at the vacuum operated valve on the stock 360 outer pipe here:

http://netdial.caribe.net/~ernie/tubinst%20tips.jpg

This valve has absolutely no effect on the performance of the car. It is there to quiet it down from idle to about 4000 rpm. Two of my friends disconnected this valve and got a louder exhaust below 4000 but with no performance loss or gain.

Now I am a little confused - you mean that a Ferrari right from the factory doesn't sound like a Ferrari?

:-)

Kurt,

The reasons I changed the exhaust are in my write-up but here they are again:

- Better sound throughout the rpm range (more Ferrari-like)
- Higher quality construction (overall exhaust AND tips)
- Better looking tips and updated Challenge style grilles
- Less heat in the engine compartment

Viken, I am just curious - why did you change the exhaust on an almost new car?

In the 355 there is a valve in the exhaust that keeps the backpressure higher below 5500 rpms, and then opens up at 5500 to let the car really scream (it is noticeably quieter with the valve closed). If the valve is stuck closed then at high rpms there is a power loss. If it is stuck open then there is a loss at high rpms. So, the aftermarket exhausts that don't take this into account have a performance loss at low rpms, but have an increase at high rpms, which is where it really counts anyway. It's good to hear that the 360 doesn't have this. It seems that it gets it's horsepower easier than the 355 does.

Bret,

I am not aware of an F355 aftermarket exhaust problem due to low-end torque decreases. However, I can tell you that I feel absolutely no loss of torque or power throughout the entire rpm range with my 360 after the "Fuchs" modification. Furthermore, the vacuum operated valves installed on the stock exhaust's outer pipes, are there for noise limitations. At least, that is what Ferrari claims.

Do the 360 aftermarket exhausts have the same problem as the 355 aftermarket exhausts (lack of low end torque because they don't take into account some sort of pressure based valve that the stock ones do)?

Dave Albright:

I was not able to find a Fuchs web site. Thanks for the compliments on the car.

Sam, I think the list of exhaust makers for Ferrari's goes like this:

Ansa (stock, IIRC)
Stebro
Tubi
Borla
Mille Miglia
Fuchs

who has more to add to this?

Does Fuchs have a website? Great looking car and nice exhaust. Good luck!

Great documentation, review and write-up.. I am not a Tubi fan and am happy to learn of alternatives.

Sound: Yes, I thought about doing this but I really don't know how to record in computer language. My friends son is into that stuff and I am trying to get him to help me with this.

Fuchs: Yes, they are. Apparently, the Fuchs company is a huge conglomerate that is into manufacturing of many different things.

Viken, you should put a sample recording on that site so we may all enjoy!

Are these the same Fuchs people that made the 911 wheels?

Ferraristi:

I just had a new exhaust system installed on my 2000 360 Modena and wanted to share my thoughts with you all. Here's a small write-up with some pictures:
