Chris

I bought my NSX from Marshall Goldman and had a
poor experience. If you need more details
we can email each other off line, or I can air
my dirty laundry in front of everyone.

Hi,

I'm new to this board and would appreciate any help. Considering buying a 97 355 Spider from Marshall Goldman (www.mgmsl.com) in Cleveland. Anyone have any experience dealing with them? Also, any reliable Ferrari mechanic in the area that can do a pre-purchase inspection?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Chris

You may want to start talking to the Ferrari mechanics that are in your area and have them offer their insights. Besides learning about the cars, you will also have a better idea of who you want to eventually service your car.
When you find a car that you are interested in, you'll want to get the serial number and the assembly number. From this, a mechanic can tell if the car was built before or after certain production upgrades were made without even seeing the car (ie. early cars had soft valve guides prone to premature wear. Later cars have better guides).
Other items -- the '95 cars are quoted at 380 hp, while the '96 and later model year cars are quoted as having 375 hp. The difference is supposed to be in the ECU module and was made for better emissions control. Having driven both versions, I'm not sure if the average driver can tell the difference and there may be enough variability between cars to make the 5 hp difference moot.
Exhaust headers have been know to burn out, but I have not heard the reason why. The factory replacements are heavier and supposedly more durable. Look at the maintenance records to see if this work was done.
If the records are missing, look for another car.
Learn what you can about the prior owner(s) of the car. Proper care and driving are far more important than low mileage.
You need to drive a few cars to get a feel for what a good one is like.
The Forza article mentioned in another post is a great start.
Good Luck

FORZA Magazine did a "Buyers Guide on it not too long ago, I find them to be a great first start for info.
