You can buy a brand new still in the crate 355 engine from T.Rutlands for well less than thank. I would go with the new engine and save the old one for parts. |

Rob, You are correct in that the one mechanic said expect to get back 50% of the rebuild cost, no more. He said if he rebuilt it, he would use it for a year then sell. Same price will be gotten. And he said a proven engine might be an easier sell rather than one not started or vetted out. Michael |

Most racers will rebuild even SCCA T1 (355, Z06, Viper) car engines every 1-2 years just to get the most out of them. If you're not looking for the extra 5% then it looks like running it til it blows might be the best, except for resale. Although I doubt a rebuild will get you $30k more in final purchase price. |

Jon, At least now you what numbers you are playing with. A preventative rebuild is worth it if you stop trusting the car for some reason. If it was me, I would probably wait. The difference in a full rebuild and a top-end seem so close that investing the 5K difference and taking a chance for the next couple years seems more logical. What would suck more if is you did a partial rebuild and its the other end that breaks. Now you have done it twice. You are skilled driver and do not abuse your car, so for now I would assume the engine is not abused also. Michael |

Michael, You are indeed correct! My friend is getting hosed by the dealer. I don't know the price for a 355 engine but a 360 crate motor is only 40K so I imagine a 355 engine is 35K tops. Originally he was quoted 20-25K, but now it's 30K and who knows where it will end up. I think the dealers give you a low quote to start with, open up the engine start some work and then add more to the bill. I told my friend Steve that he should have gotten a writen "worst case" quote in advance. Jon

Engine doesn't need to be rebuilt at this stage but as Matt Karson pointed out in one of his posts, a preventative rebuild might be a good idea on a car that has some significant track mileage. I am also seeing most Challenge cars for sale with rebuilt or fresh motors in order to get top dollar. My engine is perfectly fine at this stage but I had a friend grenade his 355 motor when a connecting rod failed and now Ferrari of Washington is charging him nearly 30K for a rebuild. I don't want to have the same happen down the road and have to do a complete rebuild with a totally new block. My engine has about 10,000 miles on it with about 60% of those miles on the street so I wouldn't expect the rebuild to be to costly but who knows with these engines. One former Ferrari technician who is a friend of mine thinks I could get away with just a top end and some other stuff for 15K. It's purely preventative at this stage as there are no problems whatsoever. Regards, Jon

Funny Jon, I was in the middle of such a conversation for the TR by accident and the two mechanics (I think they were from Shelton Ferrari) said that the price for the TR and the 355 were the same. They say expect to spend 20 - 25 K, with the number probably being 20K. The higher numbers they said come in when the owners want extra litle done that keep raising the price. The two of them laughed when someone said 30K, so I gather that one is too high and one said "for that I would buy a new engine instead". |

Just curious if any of you have had your engine rebuilt and what the cost is. I am hearing all kinds of crazy numbers from 15K to 35K at a Ferrari dealer. Thanks! Jon P. Kofod 1995 F355 Challenge #23
