I agree with Mark. You have alot of cars out there now that look great, drive excellent, and performe almost aswell as a 348 or 355 and they cost half as much to maintain and service departments are just a couple of blocks away no matter were you are. Look a the Nissan 350z! one of my customers traded in his 328 on one and he says it's the funnest car he's ever owned. Hell even the Hyundai(ouch!) Tiberon offers alot of looks and perfomance for the dollar.A 6 speed trans in a Hyundai? The exotic car companies really have a lot of work ahead of them to keep up with the new cars alot of these large companies are starting to come out with.

I think other things are dropping the price also.
In the 80's you had the TR and 308 in large numbers but everything else was very rare.

Now after 20+ years of modern higher production numbers. You have a lot of Ferraries out there.
The amount of 308's, 348's, 355's, TR's, 360's are all in the thousands! Add to that the new arrivials in the supercar market (BMW Z8, Vipers, NSX, cars we didn't have in the 1980's) and you have a lot of cars competing in that 60k-120k range for toys.

I saw that $83,000 eBay 355 Spyder in person. It was worth about $60,000, although I would not have bought it for that. Paintwork all over and very rough condition. Unless the winning bidder doesn't know how to look at a 355, it will be back.

Ferrari prices are simple supply and demand, there is not a book out there (including CPI guide) that you can trust because the market is so dynamic. A combination of the economy and the season are putting lots of prancing horses on the market, pulling prices down. When the current glut is bought out, look for prices to firm up.

I would imagine this is just 'end of summer' residual selling.

I just saw on Ebay a 355 spyder sell for $83,000. It seems that prices are being affected by the economy.

My sense is that a proportion of the sellers (hard to tell how many) are getting antsy and want to get rid of their cars-soon.

I agree with Doody; there's probably nothing wrong with many of these cars except that the owners want out-for a variety of reasons, some rational, some not. If you've got the cash or are willing to finance a toy, it's a GREAT time to be in the market as long as you're willing to walk away from anything that smells even faintly fishy.

It's been interesting to watch the ads in AutoWeek. The companies that advertise week after week have the same cars and same prices but in many cases, their ads are getting smaller and less complete-indicating either that they are giving up for the time being, or that they are truly running short of cash and are anxious to generate the flow so they can pay their bills.

Just my two cents.

What's happenning to F used car values ? I just saw my friend's 98 355B F1 yellow with 7k miles ( I know it's immaculate) for sale in the paper for $99K !!! A 99 355 spyder for $99K, and they're not selling. Has anyone here actually bought a used F car in the last 3 months ? Would you care to share experience ?

There are no such things as "used Ferraris".
Ferraris are pre-owned.

I agree with WM Hart.

FML, Cavallino, Sportscar Marketplace, etc. Read 'em all, over time, and you get a pretty good sense. Interestingly, and apropos of Chris's car on the cover of FORZA this month, my buddy the broker said suddenly there is a spurt in f-40 interest.Who said we're not rational creatures...

Per the CPI Guide: $50k for an '87 328 GTS

I think not.

You ask that question and then the next day you have the infamous Ferrari fire and they will be raising a few eyebrows.

My best advice was always to call your insurance agent and ask him what it's worth if you total it.Thats as close to a REAL value as you can find.Removes speculation and people in love with their baby.

the CPI guide is really out of whack with reality IMO. very very high numbers.

for example it shows $148K for an "excellent" 99 355 Spider 6-Speed. the finest examples haven't seen those levels since 2001.

it'd be interesting if they explained specifically where they come up with their numbers, but they don't really.

the best way to get ferrari values is to watch the listings online. watch the cars that get relisted fifty times on ebay with successively lower prices. note the surprisingly low listings (eg: $135K buy-it-now on a 1998 550? it's a fine car probably - it's just what low market value is and the owner wants out).

i spent six months looking for my 355 and am poking around at 550s now. no book will tell you the market values.

just hop in and collect some data!

doody.

The only place I can find used Ferrari values is the NADA site. Any input if these values are realistic and anywhere else to get values? TIA
