I went the SCCA racing school route because of the costs. A 2-day racing school costs around $250 and then you graduate and can actually start banging doors. Each day you get about an hour driving around with the instructor and then 2 hours on your own with all out racing. No special rules for not passing, except yellow flags. You end the day doing several practice starts.

Downside is more time on the SCCA rules and saftey vs. driving technique.

Also, you need your own equipment or rent seperately. I got helmet, firesuit, shoes, gloves, underwear, and neck brace for under $800 and they exceed minimum SCCA rules. You can usually rent race cars for around $400-800 a weekend. I ended up buying one, if you keep it up, there's a good resale market.

Cool thing now is I can race anytime I want. Someday I'll be doing it in a Ferrari and not a 100hp RX7.

I also took the 4-day road racing school last summer. The 110 degree weather was kinda brutal, but the class was awesome. The only bad thing was the class got me completely hooked on racing; now all of my money (it seems like) goes to racing, so don't say no one warned you...

I second Azspider's opinion about the car - I would definitely not use your own car, unless it is race-prepped and you are planning to race it and really want the experience in that car. The wear and tear he mentioned (brakes, tires, etc) is for real...

And one more suggestion. If you think you might ever get into racing, definitely go for the 4-day class.

P.S. No, not racing a Ferrari. But I'd be happy to, if someone is looking for somewhere to dump some sponsorship money... ;-)

I live about three miles from Bondurant in Phoenix. I have taken the 4 day school but not with my car. After taking the school I would suggest that unless you want to spend a lot of money on your car after the school to get it back in shape, use their cars. (unless yours is already set up for racing that is). I went through two sets of tires, brakes and possibly a clutch not to mention the suspension and three broken wheels after I hit an curb at 80mph. You will have a lot of fun and they are a great bunch of people. Bob actually spends quite a bit of time there and we got to tour around with him for a little wile during our class. Have fun.

I have not done this one. But I can guarantee you fun. Any which one you do is just plain fun. You learn your limits and how little you really knew before. Shitty A-pax.

I am thinking about doing the Bob Bounderant High Performance School with my car in Phoenix. There are one day courses offered by others closer to home (Sears Point, Thunder Hill, Laguna Seca) but this ones sounds much more robust. Has anyone done this? Tom
