David, That is indeed the car. Here's a link to some further information regarding the 308 GTB Paul Newman raced in SCCA: http://www.historicgrandprix.com/Drivers/Doug%20Mockett.htm Barry

David, That certainly sounds like Paul Newman's GTB. It was an early Euro version with a dry sump engine, imported to the US just before the US version GTBs became available. I'm pretty sure it was fiberglass. Raab's book has only sketchy details of the 308 series and I couldn't find any reference in the book for this car. Barry |

I think it was Rick that failed to get the 360 C into T-1 this year and the 355 C into T-2. I agree with the SCCA that they would be too competitive in those classes. However, you can still run a 360 to Touring rules in T-1. |

Rumors outside the SCCA are talking about the return of DP, which with their new Limited Prep rules might allow a LP BP 308 to compete in DP. That would be my dream because a LP 308 would be even cheaper to run than a BP (Paul's) and much much cheaper than a GT-2. I think LP rules are aligned with IT rules. This is all I've heard, any other information on the subject would be appreciated. However, the road block may be the 3,000 a year production run required, although the Caterhans (sp?) made it into EP this year with less than 3,000. I think I could build a competitive LP DP 308 for less than $35k all total. |

With more testing I know that car can win in SCCA GT2. Power to weight is good, though not an unfair advantage. Handling is the strong suit with excellent weight bias. The center of mass is too high in the rear to be optimal, though. With a bigger budget, I would install a gearbox that lowered the engine four inches, but it would cost $65,000 just for the 'box. The Sunbeam Tiger run by Patton in GT2 puts out over 400 hp but he doesn't handle as well, still the power is tough to beat. |

Rexrcr: I booboo'd on the GT-2 bit, but the original post specified B-Prod. ?????? Isn't it a little outclassed? Or maybe it was lightened enough (ala Lotus 7) to work? |

The Mohr car looks nice. I didn't remeber the exact specs, but something about Lambo carbs and a famous engine builder. I think near impossible to get one of these cars competitive in GT-2. Also, GT-2 is on the SCCA watch list for maybe going bye bye. William also has a GT-2 308 with a blown engine. |

Hans, GT-2, which the 308 ran in, allows only the V8 Ferrari and V8 Tiger, otherwise, the class is all 4 cylider and 6 cylinder engines. Our car dyno'd at 330 hp and 275 ft-lb, redline 8200. Gearbox fix was running Modena Engineering internals, dog syncros. The big bore V8 American iron class is GT-1, basically Trans Am cars run to slightly different specification (usually). I ran a couple of cars in this class, too. |

Funny, but that 308 and transporter are now stored just a few blocks from my house here in Seattle. It is owned by John Goodman of Goodman Racing. I have a bunch of photos of the car and transporter, but unfortunately done in film, not digital. I will give you a run down: The transporter has been completely repainted and is beautiful. The car is another story. It is a "runner" and a little rough, but hey, it's a race car, not a beauty queen. It is claimed to be one of the first 308's to be imported, but I didn't think to check if it was fiberglass, and I now notice I don't have a clear picture of the A-pillars. The car has a gutted interior, roll cage, and a racing seat. Stock interior is completely gone. The engine appeared to be a dry sump, had velocity stacks with no air induction, just sucking air from the engine compartment. Single distributor off the forward bank, and lot's of braided ss oil and coolant lines all over the place. The entire car, trunk and engine compartment is braced with tubing running all over the place. Alternator was running off the drive shaft! Specs: Claimed 320 hp Car was originally built by Ramsey Racing. Team manager: Gene Hackman Drivers: Paul Newman, James Brolin, Clint Eastwood. That's about all I know. The owner displayed the car at our community parade last summer. I may see it again this August. Unless he takes it to the Historic races in July. |

Mr. Lay, I managed it then. We also had the F355 in Touring 1 which finished on the podium. |

Did this car have a HEAVILY modified motor? In B-Prod (or GT-2) it would be competing with some serious horsepower, such as race-prepped small block Chevies. |

Ok, I know that car, he ran it a few years back in GT-2 at the SCCA Runoffs. Another interesting GT-2 Ferrari is the Mohr's car in NoCal. I just noticed there was a pic of it in one of the FerrariChat.com calendars. I made an offer on the car, they've been trying to sell it for several years. Anyone know the current price or status? |

LFSC has a fiberglass genuine Michelotto 308 converted from rally (original spec.) to GT road race. The car is owned by Warren Mosler in Florida, but I think the car is still in Chicago. I don't know the history and don't have the chassis number written in my notes. There may be a link, same car?? Warren's car was campaigned in the 80's by Rick Mancuso, and then again in '96 - '97. |

Martin and Rob, I've read (a while ago) that the 308 GTB Paul Newman raced at MAR was an early Euro version. The rear valance with the single cut out indicates this. I think the car was featured in Road & Track as well. I'm also curious as to the VIN. I'll check Raab's book when I get home. I remember some entries with his name listed. Barry |

boris said was one of my instructors at skip barber about 10 years ago. he would take us around bridgehampton in a van almost as fast as we went in the formula fords ! his instruction was quite criptic though - he kept repeating that racing was just a series of straights bothered by corners you had to slow down for....which made sense to everybody except the guy who stuffed it in the uphill corner at the far end.... |

Yep, I'm a huge Said fan and that's the reason I did OK this year. However, I still scored less points than I would if picking Said all year long. I always threw a Bell, Gentelozzi, or Leitzenger in there now and then. |

I was in the top 10 in that league, but I was trying to ride the Butch Leitzenger/Johnny Miller train rather than the Boris Said express, and it bit me in the ass. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! I did win a couple of nice T-shirts which once again confirmed the adage that even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Yes, I am also a huge Trans-Am fan and that site gives me my T/A fix. |
