Dom, not on the clutch side of the engine, but the timing-belt side (rear motor mount)...

Since the subject matter is kind of morphing, I started a new thread with some Dino/GT4 tidbits gleaned from talking to a former employee of the importer.

My GT4 currently being prepped for paint, is a 77 and shows no recess for a Dino Badge. It sports only 1 hole to mount the F badge in the front.

Read what Enzo said about Dino before you rebadge or worry.

My Boxer was made by Fiat and Pininfarina but badged as a Ferrari.

Hans,

My car is number 10688 (April 1975 build date), and it had the dino badging originally. I can see the recess underneath, and also the outline in the paint if I look closely.

I believe that after some time in 1976, they came badged as Ferrari's. I have the Forza buyers guide at home, I believe they may even list the serial number after which the changes were made. Will have to look it up tonight.

Peter: On an unrelated subject. Thanks for the info on the location of the Gearbox #. Unfortunately, my Jack broke, so I haven't had a chance to get under the car. Will probably buy a new one this weekend. I am assuming the location is somewhere near the clutch housing, and will take a look around.

Dom, Peter: I'm curious if all 'GT4s have remnants of the horizontal badge. I.e. - Do '79 models still show these signs?

I heard from possibly-not-reliable source that my car *may* have shown up in the US with the F-badging in place. It is certain that the original buyer, who ordered the car (not bought it off the lot), received it with F-badging. #10280 w/March build date.

Dom, same thing. In fact, you can just see the outline of the old Dino badge-recess in the paint.

To clarify, all Ferraris built by Frank are Dinos, all others are as noted by their manufacturer.

OK, not to drag this one out, but:

Peter: Was your car originally badged as a dino or a ferrari? I know that on my car (a 1975), it was originally badged as a dino, then converted to a ferrari by the dealer. If you look closely at the nose from underneath, you can see the old horizontal impression from the recessed Dino badge.

Other dino evidence: The air vents on the dash are stamped Dino.

The ferrari factory authorized the change from Dino to Ferrari, making these cars officially Ferrari's as of 1976 I think. One of my older posts has a link to the change authorizations.

And, as I've stated earlier, I love the car, whether a Dino or a Ferrari.

Oh boy Charles, don't start the V-8 "Dino" thread with Frank, he ain't budgin' from his thinkin'...

BTW Frank, take a look at this:

When the 17-digit VIN system was created back in the early eighties, all manufacturers were given letter-codes for their names.

Ferrari was given two:

-ZFF
-ZDF

Rather than writting it myself, here's the explanation from the Northwest Region FCA website (http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/vin.html):

"...The first digit identifies the vehicle's country of origin. Italy's letter is "Z," therefore, all Ferrari VINs will begin with the letter "Z".

The second and third digits identify the marque and manufacturer. To date, Ferrari SpA has been assigned and used only two codes. "DF" for the Dino, and "FF" for the Ferrari marques manufactured by Ferrari SpA. The Dino marque has not been produced since 1980, therefore "FF" will appear in the second and third place digits of all Ferrari VINs, unless you are looking at a Dino..."

I don't know about you, but I've NEVER seen a 308 GTB/S et al. carry a "ZDF" designation...

Now when mentioning my GT4, you do have somewhat of a "right" as the stamping on the frame reads only "Dino" as well as the plate above the steering column.

OTOH, the valve covers on the engine (the heart of the car), the VIN-plate on the door post and finally, the f---ing badge on the nose of the car are all Ferrari....

'Nuff said...

Frank I notice you listed all the V8 cars. I suppose the 12 cylinder guys think the rest of us aren't real Ferrari owners. Owe well I like my little V8 IMHO much prettier than most of the 12's!

I just don't have a key for either the 308GT4 Competition or the 208GT4 project. :-(
