John,
I always have a mess in my car as well. The Biggie Fries usually fall out of the damn box and the drip from the Big Mac ends between the seat and the center console.

The boat you just hose down, the Ferrari...well lets just say I tried and it is not a good idea.

John. I don't own a boat currently my friend has a sailboat now, i have owned in the past. We have agreed as much as we like sailing, power is the way for us. Thinking of a cruiser 34-36' as our town marina limits us to that size, an at less than a thousand/yr. with bubbler etc... its too nice an convenient to go elsewhere.
We are both easy goin types i allready help him on his boat no biggie for me....

Dave,

Are you already a boat owner? Not sure what type of boat you are talking about, but I can see a lot more strife coming from fractional boat ownership. The main thing is when you use a boat, you make a mess every time you take it out, especially with friends. I think it would be too easy to get on each others nerves if one of you were to lapse in boat upkeep. --- John

Im looking into the same thing with a friend. Diffrence is it will be a powerboat.
What helps in our situations is that the boat is at a neutral place the marina. Also our schedules compliment each other. Im away last week of July, he's in Spain all of August....
Of course we can enjoy it together too an still bring family/friends

Martin, if shared ownership is like a wife: There's someone else for her to whine to,
You don't need to worry about her being jealous from you paying attention to others, someone else can take her shopping and finally, let's face it, why buy the cow if you get the milk for free???

Actually, if there were only 2 or 3 others who owned it, we would each have a fairly large amount of time to use it. Also, figure if it were leased, for say $1500-2000 per month, it would only cost 1/2 to 1/4 of that. (someone mentioned a rental: It costs $1,000-2,000 per day, plus I don't want a rental)

This whole deal would really depend upon the person/people who were "in". Personalities, driving styles, etc.

Tommy, although your post is pretty funny, the real answer is "yes".

However, we would buy it in the name of a corporation, with each owner having equal shares of the corporation. That way, in the event one person is in an accident, the liability is minimized to the corporation. Of course, we would also have full insurance coverage.

shared ownership on a car is like shared ownership of a wife.

It will cost you no matter what,
you have less use,
if she breaks nobody is responsible for it and
the days she has her fluid change is always the day you should have had her for a joy ride.

It would be cheaper and less hassle to just rent one every now and then.

But you cannot say 'I own a Ferrari', but then if you do the joint thing ... you cannot really say that anyway.

I wouldn't do it ... even with my best mate!

What if one of the owners is drunk and T-bones a schoolbus full of orphaned nuns? Is the liability spread equally as well?

I think this is a fabulous idea. I've considered it myself but don't feel like I could do it here in East Tennessee, despite the financial resources and the mountain roads. By and large people here just aren't interested in anything "different". They'll spend $60K on that monster SUV, but it's "ridiculous" to buy an Italian car. "Oh, my God, think of the maintenance!..." Ya'll all know the story.

Anyway, good luck Fred. If I was near Miami I would strongly consider it, though I would worry that I wasn't as anal as you.

I have done a couple of joint car ownership ventures over the years. My experience has been less than joyous. There are issues from "you broke it.." to the clutch needs to be replaced "it wasn't me"

The only time when sharing a car made sense was a track vehicle. You know the car will be abused, you know what the fixed track cost will be etc.

For a street vehicle I would stick with cars that you can tote the note on yourself.

Ken, sorry, but judging from your post, you're out!
:-)

Yes, I know about the pitfalls of joint ownership. I did it with a boat once and it became a hassle. However, it can also be a good experience.

This would be a way to either buy a nicer car than I would buy on my own, or at least not have to leave it in the garage 99% of the time with 100% of the finacial responsibility.

It makes more sense to buy a less expensive model and have both in your garage, then to pay 1/4 and have it in the garage 1/4 of the year..

If I'm not driving it, I can stare at it in my garage..

I'll pay a quarter of the cost, drive the crap out of it and pay a quarter of the maintainence. I pity the other three fools who are my partners.

Great idea, but how do you decide who gets to keep it when and where? what about conflicts? there was a guy at one of our meetings who shared a TR with another guy. In theory it sounds great, but being anal might make you upset when the other person has other ideas...driving, selling, maint etc.

Basically I want someone else to pay for it, but I get all the ownership rights!

I may be interested in purchasing another F-car. I was curious about buying one with another person, or several others, who would share in the ownership.

I live in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area, and it would be best if everyone else lived within a reasonable distance. Person(s) must be mature, with a clean driving record as well as the finances to purchase and maintain the car. I am extremely anal about my things and would want someone simmilar who would maintain and not abuse it.

I have had a hard time justifying purchasing another one since I don't have much time to enjoy it. Perhaps owning one with someone else would keep it running and reduce my ownership costs for the time it would otherwise sit in the garage.

If you're interested, e-mail me @ "[email protected]"

Others on this board, what are your opinions of several people owning/sharing a car?
