I wish I could let you know re. the paint, it seems to be a crinkle effect, the car had it when I bought it and ut seems to stem from its racing days, so I assume it was done in Germany by Auto Becker who are now no longer.

Michael Vaughn What type of paint did you use on your 348?
I am toying with the notion of painting my airbox. I like the texture of the paint.

Pat,

Totally disagree with your
" IF you can't say something nice don't say anything at all"

If a few more people were told what people REALLY think of them then paradoxically the world may actually turn out to be a better place in the long run. By that I dont mean people should be rude or insult, but just tell the truth.

Here's my "R" but no spray can on this one, wish I was young as a teenager though. What's JC Whitney? :-) Rice Rice Baby!!!! vroom vroom J/K although I have to admit back in the days I did do some ghetto things a decade ago on my Civic but it was later removed. I was into car audio back then and had the car was featured in Car Audio Magazine in Dec 94 for the Iasca nationals. You have to understand Frank, your an old man and sees these things differently from people younger than you, didn't you do things to your cars back then that others disliked? perhaps your case is different? But I'm not here to argue, I'm keeping my day job...:-)Upload

Hey, its up to you guys to paint your car any way you like. While I wouldn't, if you are at least make it look good. The only one out of the clan posted here that looks half way decent is JRKs. The rest are way over the top. Can you say teenager with a Honda, a JC Whitney catalog and a can of spray paint ?

this thread finally got me motivated to add red to engine. i like vanimal's best but i'm planning to leave the logo and bars on the airbox black so it stands out.

ps to frank
who says fellow that decided to keep engine all black is correct? maybe he's same guy responsible for terrible electric windows, glove box strut, etc. ferraris (esp mass produced ones)are not made by God and should be improved or made to match their owners taste whenever desired.

Vanimal, a Harley is like a Ferrari in a way. It is not the fastest, best handling nor cheapest, but it is a Harley. It makes a statement all its own that no other company has been able to copy no matter how hard they try. You see a lot of V-2 motorcycles out there , but none of them live up to the Harley sound, look and mystic. Just like a Ferrari.

Modman, I have had cars that I myself considered YUCK. A 1974 Vega comes to mind . And while I didn't think the colored bra looked "good" on my 348, it was only used for highway driving and it did come off . I just thought it was better than adding plastic tape to the paint which I have seen cause damage to other peoples cars. But the butchering done to those poor 348s is unconscionable IMHO.

Frank, its your opinion, so no worries there BUT why would a F car owner, especially one like you who has had many ride a Harly?? surely something sportier to match you F cars would be more like it? IMHO perhaps a nice Aprilia or Ducati would be better.

JRK, I had used a pair of aftermarket intakes and cut down the carbon fiber part to fit and now that the car is long gone I have nothing to measure out to make another one. If I would do it again I would've opted for a carbon fiber air box instead of painting it red since the car is was blk and the red stood out too much. Frank, I must say that stock sucks and I never valued any modern type car as an investment to keep stock. I like my cars to be personalized and it's part of the enjoyment of working on them and checking out car clubs otherwise what's the use of going to car clubs and seeing the same stock car as yours that you can see everyday in your garage. I'm not really into car clubs but I do like to personalize my car in a tastefull way to where it doesn't look like every other one on the street. And no modern car would be considered to exotic to make cosmetic enhancements and besides looks is just as important if not more than performance, if it wasn't, a Ferrari would not have been in my top 3 car list. Opinions are OK but I wouldn't start bashing on how these pics look, the owners of these cars like the way they look because it's a personal touch. I would've mentioned on what may look better on an advised opinion but not to say YUCK, how would you feel if someone mentioned about that on the cars you like, it may not matter to you but to some it would not feel good to hear these things. I remembered when you had your 348 and you had a color matched bra on it and some would say it looks bad and I have seen a 355 with a color matched bra on it and it didn't look good to me compared to a clear vinyl type shield so it really doesn't matter what others thinks as to each their own tastes for whatever reason. I would say more but I don't see the need to go further on this unless this doesn't explain well enough on this subject.

Neal, personalized is getting a vanity license plate or new wheels. I agree that use of a car is good, but the horrors done to those 348s is a crime IMHO.

totally disagree with frank
a car is a car is a car regardless if ricer, pasta, etc
i dont get the types who treat fcars as precious items never to drive or modify
personally, fcars that are personalized and show evidence of use, esp track use are the true gems.

All I can say is "YUCK". They all look bad, some worse than others. Keep your day jobs because auto engine aesthetic design is clearly not any of your callings. Hey, I'm not trying to be mean, but good grief guys, that is an Italian exotic, not a rice burner !

Modman,

Can you get hold of another airbox system like your. I like the carbon fibre pipe attachments with the chrome pipes.

When I did mine "The one posted with the carbon aluminum intake" the paint matched pretty much dead on and the only difference was that the paint was new and the original ones on the heads is just old and not washed. I used I believe a non gloss engine paint and was very easy to prep and paint. Too much red would've gone to far and the next thing I would've done was polished the manifolds. I wouldn't add anything else as far as putting additional emblems or badges as it starts taking away from a clean look, not to put your badges down JRK since it's each their own but it starts to remind me of cars with too many badges on them or a car that has the name of the car on the windshield visor, like a identity crisis of car make. The air filters in the hot engine compartment won't do much good and Ferrari's run really really hot. I would've opted for carbon fiber intakes but at the time this was readily availble and was merely an experimental project done for fun.

It seems that most of these red airbox covers are all slightly "off" from the engine block red... has anyone tried to find the exact paint used for the engine block... or is it the same but just appears this color over black?

to byrons question: first the box was painted full in red an then the lettering has been scraped out, so we got that nice look similar to the finish of the 360 engine. then all was fixed with a clear paint.
they did not use any special paint but be shure not to use a glossy paint.
the red finish even looks nice, when the cover is closed and theres the red shining through.

I am not sure that I am going to switch to red (but it does look nice), but I do need to touch up a bit of paint on the corner of the airbox. What kind of paint did you folks use and what prep did you do on the box?

Thanks,
JMG

I like it, I like iiiiitttt. In addition to the red, has any one done chrome or any polishing? The engine of the Ferrari's really dont have the "hey wow" look of the exterior. Bye the way, nice job fellas. My air cleaner will be getting the red treatment for sure.

Hey guys, great job on the paint. Although some of the other owners may not agree, I think that the engine bay does need some color! :-) What type of paint did you use? Michael, did you just scrape the lettering out after painting or did you tape around it?

i like the look of the 360 engine and even the 308 Qv or 328 with the red finish. when you open the enginecover of a 348 its very grey and black.
so i wanted a special finish - red and metal !

what do you think about it ?Upload
