After a time, you may find that 'having' is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as 'wanting.' It is not logical, but it is often true." (Spock, in Amok Time) I'd wanted one since high school. I worked and waited a lot of years before I could justify and afford buying a Ferrari. I am grateful to have it, and I am also grateful that "having" turned out to be better than "wanting" in this case. However, it is what you do with the "wanting" that shows your character. Some wants will never be fulfilled, but such is life. Prioritize what you want and work towards what is most important to you.

Even if someone were to give you a car.... NOT! Your first oil change would be about the same price as your current vehicle.. GET REAL! |

I own a 355, it has not been a life time dream but after riding in one around a race track I wanted one. To buy it I took an equity release loan on my house of 25,000 and funded the rest. To pay for servicing I take on car repair work when I need to and work 6 days a week in IT the rest of the time. It is quite hard work in funding the car and I will probably sell it soon and really miss the car but will sigh releive in trying to fund it. Kevin and anyone else who assumes all nice cars are owned by people that do not work hard for it are wrong. Appologies if this is not your opinion. P.S. I have two lovely kids as well and they are more precious and more fun then any Ferrari. Just enjoy what you have, you have something money cannot buy. And as prices depreciate one day you may own a Ferari. And what fun to share it with your children

As I am sure many Ferrari owners have experienced, this is the perception of many that a Ferrari owner has $100s falling out of our pockets getting in and out of our cars, so whats the big deal might as well give one away, money is nothing to us and we are stupid with it Did Daddy spoil Kevin as a kid and he thinks everything should be given to him? |

Kevin, Buying a Ferrari is the easy part, if there was such a thing as easy and Ferrari. The cost is in maintainence. Even if some poor dope gave you one it would eventually become a 1:1 scale model if not maintained properly. And that would suck! You must remember that no matter how much money owners have on this board we have all but but a lot of time and effort into ownership. Maybe what people see is lack of effort from you. I sure if there was a car like that available it would probably go to DES anyway! Nothing is free! It take sweat, tears, and pain. BTW, they are not just cars. I use to think the same thing, infact I may have said that on this board. But after being apart of this board and reanalyzing my ownership, I notice that these cars are a lot more than "just". Ferraris are a direct representation of someones dream come to life. You can see that on the face of young children as you drive by and they point and smile, and adults when they stop to take a look while parked. They're not cars, they're dreams and goals. |

Modman, i have, i think, 25 (check my profile) 1:18 models (which are the most expensive), that i've collected over a period of about 3+ years... The most money i've EVER spent on a 1:18 car was $35 (actually, i paid that twice)... Lately, they've been on sale for $10 in most places and i picked up a silver, topless Ferrari F50 earlier this week for $15... i don't have a couple hundred bucks to drop on a toy and i'll have to be making a considerable amount of money before i ever consider making a move like that... i'm sure if you added up the prices on all my toys, it wouldn't be enough to get any considerable service done on your Ferrari... But i get what you're saying... |

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin! If you are serious about owning a Ferrari and serious about this chat forum, by now you probably understand that your question was well deserving of the replies. You should have recieved more of a blasting, but that shows you what a decent group you have here. I will give you the Benefit of the doubt though...In the future, don't ask stupid questions! If you are serious, you don't need to spend a great deal of money (yet). Find yourself a high mileage 308 for $15-$20K that runs....It may not have records. Save your money and get things taken care of on the car while you are driving it like a grandma. It may take you a few years (i.e.: While not taking away from important expendatures in life), but in time, you may have a nice car (and at least one in your garage). Guys: Am I off base here? I bought my second 308 for $15.5K. Its nice, but I am into it about $18K and still smiling! It may take our friend a bit longer, but you do not have to be 'rich' to have a registration that says 'Ferrari'! |

DES, how many mini scaled cars do you have? I thought I was nuts buying so many of them and some of them cost more than a couple hundred a pop. You could've bought a full size ready to drive Ferrari if you sold your collection and stop buying any more scaled cars. A blk 308 was sold for 21k in my area and it was in pretty good condtion although it had 75k miles. |

I don't know if any of you guys remember this but way back in 82 or 83 some guy put an ad in R&T asking for a free red Ferrari 308 GTSi. A few months later R&T picked up on it and in their "People and Places" section they reported that the fellow was actually offered a couple of free ones. I was in high school back then and I wanted one so bad that I seriously considered trying it for myself. I have often wondered if there was any truth to that guy getting one. Does anyone remember seeing this too? |

I always told my friends the best punishment to a guy is to let him own and stay in a US$30million house and give him 10 Ferraris but he cannot rent or sell them. He got to pay for the insurance and annual licenses fee for the cars and the rate for the house. Not to mention the small bills for repair, electricity, gas etc etc.

A guy wakes up in a strange place, can't figure out where he is or how he got there. He wanders around for a while. Just as he starts to get really hungry he spots a place that has a sign that says, "FREE LUNCH". He goes in and has some lunch. He figures out where he is when he has one of the after-dinner mints. Turns out it was a bedevilment that they served him. |

I smell a midlife crisis coming on. Buy a corvette, a townhome, a winerack all the while denying your kids a wife child and spousal support. Get your life and home in order then the Ferrari will come. Earn it. |

Kevin, What a pity to ask for things like that! I wonder what kind of example you set for your children? I am 29, work 12-15 hrs a day, love it, have a family, and wouldn't beg for such a car. How are you gonna appreciate it if you don't know what it take to own it? Soon, I will have a Ferrari, because I love he car, because I am responsible with my money, the same way I am with my family, and because I am focus on the goal. Get a grip on your life, earn essential things, and then consider the F-car...... |

Kevin, I do not own a Ferrari, and I am in the same boat as you, i.e. married and have wonderful little children that I am raising the best I can. Lets face it, no matter how awesome a Ferrari is it is just a car and your family are and always will be 1000+ times more important. Ferraris are for people with high amounts of disposable income, not for people like you and I. BUT that does not mean it cannot happen. Once our kids get to a certain age and job prospects improve our disposable income will improve and there are Ferraris within normal peoples range, ie. 365GT/4 2+2s, 308s, etc. Thus if you have the need to own a exciting Italian car NOW, then why not try an Alfa Romeo as they are a great driving experience and have all the same qualities just aimed at the lower priced market. In fact I, and many of my fellow Alfa owners, would never sell our Alfas ... and please don't buy an Alfa or Fiat thinking that you are somehow buying a little Ferrari, etc. as some do. Alfas in particular are great marques on their own and have great heritage ... Good luck. Pete |

There's a consequence to every action. You should have thought about that before you decided to breed. If a Ferrari (or any other desire) is that important, you will make room for it. TANSTAAFL

This is why I don't want to get married or have kids in the near future. I'll be 50 before I can afford such things. Not going to make that mistake. That's why I bought my vette. It's been a pain since the day I got it and I'm glad I didn't wait that long because I would have been pretty dissapointed. Not that there not a blast to drive. I guess if you want to play you gotta pay. |

Kevin, welcome to FerrariChat... Usually, when i'm looking for 1:18 cars to add to my collection, i often go home after a late evening of toy-store-hopping, very frustrated... There is the occasional moment in a store where EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD doesn't exist when i finally find a car that i've wanted but don't yet have- like the other night, i found a 1:18 silver topless F50...! i was ecstatic...! The effort and time and work i put into my search paid off (of course, it's an endless cycle, but still)... When one is looking to acquire something, appreciation for it comes at it's highest when it's not just automatically given... That said, i'd like to join your list and note that donors can contact me, too...! |

I'm thinking "will work for Ferrari" would be a sign most of us could display proudly!! Not too many of us have Ferraris as "throw away" cars, or without at least some sacrifice in disposable income!! These cars are a privilege you earn by hard work, not a "weekend toy" someone gives you because you're such a nice guy that you're actually raising your family!! Bust your ass, put your kids through college, pay for a couple of weddings, then buy the f**cking thing yourself!! |

The majority of us work hard in life in order to earn the privilege of owning a car like this. The best way to raise your family "the best you know how" may not be to have an expensive weekend car that you can't afford to buy yourself. The other cost of ownership is maintainence, after all... not just buying the car to begin with. If it's about time to actively start pursuing your dream, start by actively saving like we did until you can buy one for yourself. There is no such thing as a free lunch!!

I would be happy to donate to the cause. However, I believe that my stash of gold bullion and twenty dollar gold pieces are still in the car, and are extremely heavy for me to lift. Would you mind terribly if I left that gold inside the car when I paid to have it transported to your house? Sorry for the inconvenience of you having to clean it out.

I'm ready to get flamed even though I am being totally serious. If you've got an extra Ferrari in the garage that you'd like give to a well deserving chap who will take excellent care of her, my arms are open. That's right, I am married guy raising my family the best I know how. I am just looking for a weekend car to compliment my daily driver (92' Mazda 323). I thought it's about time I actively start pursuing my dream of owning a Ferrari. |
