I was at Norwoods on Wednesday poking around their shop and they have 2 308/288 conversions working now. Both with the stretched chassis....

Exactly Jim, Kevin makes a point that Butch won't get into the stretch because of liabilities. Smart man. Cutting frames and welding them back together is suicide as far as liability is concerned. In a lot of states,if not all now,it is illegal to cut a frame and weld it back together and charge for it or sell it on the retail market. Be careful if you do it yourself. It's ok if you intend to keep the car, but if you ever sell it there could be liabilities that could come back and bite you in the ass even though it is "buyer beware." Just a thought.

I would look very hard at why you want to extend the chassis before you do it Bob Norwood in Dallas used to have the longer pannels avaliable I have a used subframe from a original 288 that I suppiled the parts for repair That would be the way to go if you are going to lenghten the chassis Give me a call if you like or email me 520 778 7398

There's a guy on Ebay now, selling a 15 foot length of genuine oval chassis tubing. Says he's got ten lengths avaliable. I think you can "Buy It Now" for $100.

Would appreciate referral to aftermarket source of stretched glass 288 rears and deck lid if available. Butch Hooper (ItalianDesign) has chosen to stay stock length cuz liability concerns associated with chassis cuts. He has been a pleasure to deal with on this project-- forthright and honest.

Thanx,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Have not done one yet, but I have had the parts for about 6-7 years. I have everything for the convesion except for the front and rear bumpers. (and rear louvered decklid) Got mine from Cable Cars in Phoenix (owned by jim Carpenter).
How far along are you on you conversion?
Are you missing any parts? I just happen to have a video tape that you might find pretty interesting. (if I can find it again) The parts that I have are made to fit the 308 w/o stretching the chasis, do you have the original stretched parts? That would be a intersting conversion (the stretching).
If you have a chance and want to give me a call here are my phone #'s. It's a bit time consuming to type this all out, and sometimes questions asked to someone in the typed format "sound" a bit different than when you are talking to someone on the phone.
We might be able to help each other out a little.

I remember reading some horror posts on Jim Carpenter. Make sure you solicit comments before dealing with him.

Leonardo has a set of wheels that are an exact knock off of the 288 gto wheels in the for sale section.

There's also another guy somewhere in AZ, William has his name. I think something like Jim Carpenter.

Just begun a conversion of 79 308 GTB to 288. Starting the chassis stretch this month. Looking for advice re brake upgrades, wheels (Speedline, Compomotives, etc), etc. Any chat areas for those doing similar modifications?? Would like to get in touch with others doing or have done.

Thanx,
Kevin
