Lawrence,
how right you are.

After I had put the spacers on my car I would not trade to a 355 either. The louvers make the car look mean, something that the 355 lost to rounded styling. Still like the 355 engine lid better with the integrated spoiler lip though.

With the spacers the car looks wider and lower. Awesome if you ask me. Sorry but the pictures do not come out quite as good, you gotta see it to believe it. DAVID, show some pix of your car!

Tell me if I'm wrong, but the 348 and 355 have about the same profile, what makes them look so different is the TR influenced air intakes, which I happen to like on both the 348 and TR's.

348's will depreciate less than the 355 over the next several years and the performance difference is less than a second for 0-60. But since your budget is $100k and not $50k, the 355 (on average) will be a quicker and the more solid driver.

Dan/Guys,

There are other things to consider as well. I had a chance to talk to lots of folks at the Concorso Italiano last weekend.

There were several comments that with each new generation our beloved autos get less and less handcrafted. For example the engine cover louvers on 348 are still handcrafted and a seperate assembly while on 355 the vents/engine cover is just a big stamping (take a look). I also heard many comments that there is an attraction to the styling of the side strakes as well.

Of course to each his/her own. Maybe I am now biased. I was tempted to trade up to a 355 but my 348 is really growing on me in the styling dept.

Maybe not quite as fast or not quite as refined/balanced as a 355 but maybe dollar-for-dollar a better buy?

It has been completely reliable so far and I drive it very spirited.

With a very early 355 you will encounter the same problems as with early 348's and all cars of first year production. A younger 355 will cost over 100K.
The prices for the 355 will come down. You can see this already taking place. They shoudl be coming to 96's for $80K-$90K. That is a reasonable price for the car.

348's you can get for $50K in good shape. I bought my 348TS , 1991, 21,900;Mls for $ 56,000 at a dealership (in 3/2000). The car was flawless and won a concourse 3 weeks later. If you are going for a spider you will be looking at $65K to $70K but get a 1994 car.

As David said, it really is a price issue. Buying a 355 right now will cost you in loss of value. Maybe it would be good to spend only $50K and wait another year and then upgrade to 355.

If you can afford the $100K+ for a 355 I would buy 2 early 348's, one for the track and one for around town use!

# 1 I think a nice 348 is getting harder and harder to find - # 2 as you had touched on reliability of a 348 is supposedly less then a 355 as well as top speed and 0-60. But so is price. 348's are great looking cars but if you can afford the 355 i think you would be better off because you will have more comparable cars to shop and be getting the ferrari version of dvd in lieu of vhs

I have an rt/10-2000 and an 87 328...they are two totally different cars. the viper can't compare to the 328..the 328 is much cooler than the viper. a 355 would be better than the 328. this is an easy choice.

Hi guys. I am seriously considering trading my beloved Viper to play with a Ferrari (forget the flames please). With the prices on the used 355 market, I am sort of kicking myself for not buying a while back, but I am trying to keep things around $100K or so. I am just beginning to look and could use some help. I don't need a daily driver, but might like a little track time. Figure 3-4K miles per year. My initial research seems to suggest that the 348s are a bit less reliable, but otherwise similar to the 355s. Is that true? Can some of you please help me understand the real differences and guide me as to things I should look for? Thanks so much!
