I drive my 90TR everyday. Probably around 8K-10K every year.
Routine servicing keeps it running.

This seems like one of those situations where you "cannot have your cake and eat it too"

As others have mentioned, in order to drive ANY Ferrari the way you want to, it is going to be a very, very expensive proposition.

You must also consider the resale vale of your prospective car after a couple of years. It may be difficult to sell a car with 50k or 60k when others are available with much less mileage. This would especially be the case with the new 550 spyder.

Perhaps you should consider an F car for the weekends and buy something else (that wont depreciate as much) for the mountain driving.

just my 2 cents

Dave,
for your high milage driving you are much better off with 8cyl. Remember that in 30K Miles you have at least one major service and one almost major service. So your car will be sitting at the meachnic for at least one full month as that is service you can not really do on your own, especially on the V12.

A good V-12 is the TR (1992 or younger) also the 88 1/2 to 1991 Testarossa. All 456 or 550. Basically everything that is 10 years or younger.
None are removable tops though.

Look at 348 and 355 and 328 (late model). Especially if you need an A/C every once in a while you want to start looking at 348 and up.

If you have heard that the 308 has high maintenance costs then take that times 2 or 3 and you know how much a 12 could cost. Anyway a cheap and nice alternative could be a 400 or 400i with convertible conversion. It's a 2+2 with 12 and they usually come with automatic. Price from 25 to 45 K USD.

The only car suitable for your 30,00 mile per year drive, that is also a 12 cylinder & a ragtop/Targa top is the 550 Maranello Barchetta. These cost a fortune (>$400,000). I don't think they make the 456 in a soft top or removable top. The 308 is an 8 cylinder, not a 12. Same for the 360.

There are a few Testarossa Straman convertible top conversions out there for fairly reasonable prices ($60,000-80,000). I don't know anyone driving a Testarossa 30,000 miles a year.

Going back a bit, The 365 GTB (Daytona) was made as a spyder, again a 12 but real expensive ($300,000 and up). There are some non-factory Daytona convertibles selling for about $120,000, but they cannot be entered into formal events like concourses.

for the amount of mileage you are stating I would go with the Barchetta if you can swing it. The older models, while having robust engines, were never designed for that much driving.

For the fun of it was considering a Ferrari as a possible daily driver, otherwise an occassional use.

Normally I put about 30,000 miles a year on the daily driver, much of it in the mountains.

I have also heard that a 12 will take one's breath away.

I am a rag top man, so a spider or the removable top section.

At first I was thinking about the 308 GTS QV.

However, if luck runs out, it appears that the 308 can have high maintenance costs. I would do much of the maintenace myself.

Another thought I had was to buy something else (rag top)as an everyday vehicle while I saved up to buy a 12 cylinder rag top Ferrari. I have thought about the Mercedes 450 SL plus I understand there are also 2 relatively inexpensive new 2 seater sports cars out there.

What does the list think of this approach?

What 12 cylinder rag top or removable roof section Ferraris are out there? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Are there any rag top or removable roof section Ferraris that are recommended to use 30,000 a year? When I asked the Dealer this, he almost croked.

Have a great day,
Dave Wapinski
