Steve, Doody, Wm, Dan - Thanks for the helpful feedback. I think I will trend towards a 99 or 2000. I really like the 550, it is a beautiful car.

You can find a 99 with more mileage for the same price...possibly even a 2000.

And, with that kind of mileage, the car must have spent some time sitting. Some problems won't appear until its been driven for a little while, so if you are going to buy this car, whatever the price, build in some extra "warranty" time, so when things go, you'll have some recourse. I bought a 97 with 6k miles a few years ago, and it took a few months of breakdowns to sort it out. Had the car been gone over thoroughly, i shouldn't have had most of the problems. But, because it had been sitting, coolant hoses problems, and other glitches, only made themselves apparent after i drove the car for a several weeks. The dealer took care of everything, but some of the stuff just won't come to your attention until you've driven it a little bit. Oh, yeah, and that price is too high in this market. Two years ago, that would have been a steal, but Maranello prices have continued to fall; 97's should be considerably cheaper than the price you quoted.

even if it was the last 1997 built, it's still six years old now, and most shops would tell you that it needs its first major service (30K miles or 5 years, whichever comes first). the 30K includes sparkies and belts. while the 550 doesn't require an engine-out for this servce, it's still expensive - figure $3000 to $6000 ($4500 on average?) depending.

in today's market, that price is a bit high. if the car was perfect (condition, history, papers, accessories, etc.) and had the major done, i think it'd be a solid deal at $125K in this market. if the dealer's willing to back the car up a bit with a reasonable warranty maybe another few to five gees.

make sure you find out from the dealer whether it's on consignment or not - those can be a bear to negotiate on (silly sellers).

get a PPI done. make sure they check for all the various "550 problems" we've been seeing pop on this board (search the archives) like the shock-mount actuators; engine mounts; delaminating glass; alarm update; water pump; etc.

make sure all the recalls have been done!

ask questions - we're all happy to help here (really!).

doody.

Too high IMO for the # of years (especially if "15K service" is taken literally). I forbid you to pay more than $115K! ('cause I want to get a 550 for ~$100K )

Today - I saw a 1997 550 with Tubi, 15K service done advertised for $145K. It had just over 4,000 miles. What do you think of this deal? I am kind of interested in a 550 in the next several months and this seemed reasonable. I am sure there would be some room for negotiation. It was at a dealer (that was closed) but I went onto their website and it looks like it is in great shape. Silver with Black interior.
