Greg,
from what I have heard, normal maintanence items can often be handled by an independant or well qualified DIY, but when it comes to diagnosing problems...you need the assistance of your authorized dealer.

...however, is the 355 (and 360) that much less serviceable by the owner?

My understanding is that yes, you are really limited in what you can do, in terms of diagnosing and resetting codes on the car.

OBD-II standardizes all emissions-related codes and check/reset procedures, but systems like ABS and air-conditioning are still allowed to use proprietary signals and codes.

Some of the techs who hang out here could answer this more definitively, but I will say that the dealership guys are very proud of their proprietary diagnostic systems. Without getting too much into the politics of the situation, let's just say that Ferrari does their dealers a real favor by locking the various codes and interfaces away from the independent shops.

John,

I've heard a lot of talk about many of maintenance tasks on 355s being much more difficult because of the SD-1 / SD-2 requirements (bleed brakes for example). By the way, I don't mean to hyjack this thread..., however, is the 355 (and 360) that much less serviceable by the owner?

Great pics and captions!

Did anyone go to the vintage race afterward? Everyone kinda disappeared as I got ready to leave.

I didn't go to the race. I headed home right after the Maserati presentation, when my camera's batteries died.
