Thanks guys, I have just over 10,000 miles on the clocks at the mo, and Florida seems to be my favoured destination.

Faisal is right, the car is a Euro spec car and will need to be converted to US spec, so where do I get someone to do this chaps?

Art,
California will not allow a previously unregistered vehicle to be registered for the first time, if it was purchased out of state and has less than 7,500 miles on the odometer. That law is designed to thwart CA residents from buying out of state to avoid having to pay the higher CA sales taxes.

I think Nick wants to bring a non-US car into compliance with US regulations. When the vehicle was originally manufactured for a non-US market, Registered Importers and Independent Commercial Importers (RIs and ICIs) are required to make the needed modifications and then submit a petition to the NHTSA for approval.

Only then can the vehicle be legally registered in any state.

Rgds,
Faisal.

Nick:

Depends upon which state you want to import the car to. California will not license an import unless it has 7500 miles on the odometer. I don't know about the other states, but I would check with the destination state and see if there are any funny requirements.

Nick, you can contact David Castelhano in Florida. He will have the answers for you; good, bad or otherwise. He is very familiar with the process. Call 561-747-3311 or email to [email protected]
Mention my name. He is also a FChat reader.

I always thought Asam Cars were seriously overpriced...I see nothing has changed.

Nick, can you give me a bit more info, are you moving to the US (temp or permanent)? looking to sell your car overseas?

I looked into doing the same thing. I found a car overseas for $180, then got a quote for the conversion around $18. Then they told me it would take up to 8 weeks and that the DOT or EPA could hold my car as long as they wanted to do the testing. I figured I might be better off just trying to negotiate a deal in the US. I looked on www.asamcars.com

Anyone know how I can do this and what modifications need doing and roughly how much this costs. The car is LHD with MPH clocks.

Is there anyone how can point me in the right direction please?
