Ben, LOL. >>> Third cousin twice over<<<

Okay, I am no expert in geneology, however I am going to make an assumption: Your Family Tree actually HAS BRANCHES, CORRECT? Okay, good.

If your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd cousin is ANYWHERE near those branches (or you are thinking of running ANY F-car through the car wash: Revert back to rule #1, (you just don't do it!!!)

Cheers!

Ton,

As you already know I am with Peter this time. Washing my car is my own business! No one cleans my baby except for me! :-) (You know I am single!)
About the scratches: I am not so concerned about that to be honest. Have never discovered anyone on my BMW although I always wash them in the carwash. Even when you should have one you could still polish it out. Just choose one of the "scratch free" washes and you should be on the safe side.
What concernes me most is the wast amount of water runnning in the almost open engine bay of my 348. Cant be good for the look of the engine and especially for the open lying Bosch Motronic parts. Perhaps I am a bit overconcerned but still there is lots of troubles with these devices anyway. Dont want to stress that by drowning them in soap water all couple of weeks.
Just my 2 cents...

Con saluti cordialissimi,
Jens Haller

I remember that the dealer last year took the 360 through the carwash before he let me testdrive it.
As we discussed this he convinced me that the car wash was 100% scratch free!

any opinions on this?

'Ran it through a carwash???' I hope it was at least the touchless.

Prior to detailing F-cars and always wash with the clean white cotton shag mit. Not exactly anything special but a little common sense :-)

LOL...a ritual in washing Ferrari's?
INSTRUCTIONS FOR RITUAL FERRARI WASHING:
*) Point Ferrari toward Modena, Italy
*) Light two Italian wax candles
*) Play Italian opera's the whole duration
*) Keep sacred towels nearby always facing Modena

...was that a little overboard?

Washing my 308 is a ritual...Like going to church or watching a 'guys' movie on a Saturday night. Lay out all of your cloths, bucket, towells, cleaning stuff, goofy brushes, Q-Tips for the vents and a cold beer and NO ONE can assist! Life just does not get any better!

Party foul, what? Sorry, its the truth. You can imply what you wish.

It doesn't matter who they are, what religion, how tall or short.. it matters what kind of job they do and that job is a poor one.

Car washes are not careful. The supplies they use are very poor quality. They wash the dirt off and put swirls in your paint. If your lucky, just swirls in the wax.

If your in a pinch where fixing the swirls is easier then washing off the grime such as after an interstate/across state drive, go for it. Otherwise, they are just a bad idea if you care enough about the exterior/interior of your car.

Have you noticed the number of conversations that you start up when washing your Ferrari on a Sat/Sun morning?
I can't get 10 mins into the wash before someone stops by and wants to talk Ferraris. This of course is as much fun as the wash ; ) I usually end up sitting with the people in my car and give them the whole 'tour'.
You guys have this fun too?

No matter how much money you have, IMO you should not run an f-car through the car wash.

It is like french kissing your cousin... You just don't do it!

I do all my own washing, but that's because I actually enjoy it. I've washed the family cars ever since I was little, and even when I visit my parents I'll give their cars a little detail job.

Money is the great tiebreaker. If he has $200MIL in the bank and scratches his $750K Enzo or his $250K 360 Spider, who cares? If he loses $100K or $300K in depreciation in one year, who cares? It doesn't make any difference when you have a fat wallet.

hand washing is not a prerequisite for owning a Ferrari; however lets get real! Someone in the thread said "pride of ownership". That hits the nail on the head.
Lets do a comparison between car wash results and hand washes.

At my old car wash we would do a hand wash in the back area with a bucket for cars that are too low for the track for $20.00 or customers that request a hand wash only

Brushless car washes do more damage than cloth as car washes use recycled water and small particles in the water will blast your paint

Soft cloth is better but if you follow a dirty vehilcle the dirt sticks to the cloth and will scratch your paint, the same goes for a hand wash if the water in the 55 gal barrel is dirty or the washer doesn't rinse is mit or washes from the wheel well area and picks up dirt and then
washes your door,hood or whatever
with out rinsing you will have scratches also

Which is why I will only wash a car I care about myself

Nothing wrong with a car wash. But, there's a big difference between

A) washing your Ferrari in a do-it-yourself stall because of bug splatter or as a routine

and

B) taking it to the nearest 100% handwash place, where if you live in Southern California, you get a bunch of Mexicans using tatty and/or already used shop towels on your paint with a lack of attention to detail who put swirls and scratches in for $10-$20. But, they wash a lot of dirt off

Mercedes actually did a survey/research on this a few years back and concluded that most of their owners did the most damage to the car finish with improper washing habits. Cars that went thru the drive thru washes were in better overall condition. I would never take my F car thru one, but would use the current touchless technology washes for other cars. More time for the Fcar hand wash ; )

Well if you use a carwash, then that probably means that you
a- dont have the time to wash the car yourself
or
b- you dont want to wash the car yourself

anyone who just sees a ferrari as "only a car" would probably wash it at a car wash

Picture this: you're driving across country in your Ferrari, and the bug spatter on the front of your car is getting quite, oh... thick. You pull into a carwash to spray the stuff off until you get home and can wash the car off. WTF is this big deal about a car wash???

IMHO, it lacks pride of ownership. If anyone has ever looked BEHIND the soft cloth you would find some really nasty (abrasive) highspeed brushes back there.

On the other hand, there are some 100% hand wash outfits out there. That process would seem much more reasonable.

Really on the more abrasive units your are causing micro-scrathes in the clear coat. The more times you accumulate them and the more times you buff them out, you are loseing a certain amount of clear coat. Really best off to only do hand washes.

not that it really matters, but was this a typical car wash or brushless type? a real "brushless" would not be so bad especially if the car was very dirty and the owner was LAZY.

Should be alright as long as he squeezes in a complete detail in there once in a while.

I love the signs "Brushless" and you pull up and the guy has a big stick with a brush on the end ready to scrub your bumpers and tires - ouch!

I think it's in reference to one of those drive through (not always so) "soft" touch car washes.

Some of the newer ones seem to actually be quite soft and they have completely touchless ones now.

I'd still handwash the toys though.

In the much debated (for posting) article of Jay Kay picking up his black Enzo from the factory, the magazine included a shot of Mr. Kay washing it himself in a "drive-up and spray" type self-wash. Now that's some big money to trust to a self-wash IMO.

I can't believe that the guiding rails would be low enough. If the Ferrari's go thru an automated wash, it was probably specially built for the cars.
