Laura,
Will you consider the 360 Stradale? Top of the line performance wise for the 360 model. It's a coupe w/ more hp and lighter wt.

Hey MM (James),
I didn't know you were looking for something new.
Geez, you Viper guys are all over the place;)
The Hemi is excellent, great vehicle for towing.
I only recently started looking for my new one, figured this is the place to come for information.
But you know, the more these guys post pictures, the more ready I am.

Whart
I dealt with Frank at Algar also. A straight shooting guy. I spoke with him about 6 months ago and he seems to enjoy selling porsches. I think it's his favorite brand.
But back to this thread. I agree it's important to establish a relationship with a dealer or dealers. This relationship will always come in handy in the future.
Whart, are you going to the Ferrari Sierra Callenge?

As you will see, you will get a lot of advice, and even the disagreeable types offer insight. One of the things that real important in owning these cars is not just nailing a straight car without hidden problems; its also having a good relationship with a dealer, even if you buy privately. Its not that they are unreliable, but you want to have confidence that if something breaks, the dealer will be on top of it ASAP, etc. Thus, even if you buy from an individual, get the dealer involved in the PPI, buy some stuff from the dealer, etc. to develop the relationship.
Nothing wrong with buying from a private seller or a broker and there are some reputable ones here.
I live in NY, bought my first ferrari (a 348 spyder in black/tan) when i still lived in the city, and have bought quite a few since then, currently a black/black 550 sans top (aka barchetta aka don't go out in the rain with this car). I dealt with Algar ferrari in Phila for six ferraris largely because of my relationship with frank donatoni, their salesmanager who has since left.
Miller in Conn. is reputable, although i had issues with their service; WWo Cars is solid, good service; i've never dealt with the Long Island dealer.
You probably can save on a preowned car, and i don't think the demand for coupes is as great as it was (the spyder still sells for oversticker and there are waiting lists).
If you are set on a black 360, go for it. I agree that it is a great looker, i am ambivalent about the f-1 shifter, preferring a stick (but that's another whole thread that's been beaten ad naseum here if you do a search), and for black ferraris, i highly recommend a lifetime supply of Wurtz Zebra (detailing) spray which you can order by phone from their place in Joisey. Good luck and welcome to the club/cult/addiction/obsession/...

The small matter of the extra 70K they were retailing for when I got mine :-)

There's depreciation and there's throwing money out the window - I figured that on a coupe I'd lose some money but basically from the list price down. On Spiders when I bought them the going rate was 230K plus (50+K over list). If you look at 355 spider prices now, they're "sensible". I did consider a Euro spider which I could of had for about the same price as a US coupe, but I wanted the warranty and peace of mind - you may as well have that on a new car.

Dan, the 360 is one of my favorite Ferraris (360 spider, to be exact); it has such a refined look to it, yet with subtle hints of a strong DESire to be ever so wild... Everytime i see one, my heart skips a beat...
Black is my favorite color... Black on black is awesome for any car, in my opinion... Your car is just intense... What, may i ask, pushed you to get a coupe as opposed to a spider...?

Yeah it was tough deciding to not go red, but I love it - these photos are pre-tubi which I personally love, the sound is great and the tips are larger/shinier if these things matter :-). I think the challenge grill looks great with Black, whereas on a yellow 360 spider it looks awful! I don't think it works all round as well as the 355 challenge grill, but in Black...

Laura:

I've got a coupe on order, build date in Oct, delivery in Dec/Jan. There is another current thread that discusses the various options. Remember that some of the options are not compatable, such as the premium sound and the sun roof. I've make friends with the saleman, spend a little time and make sure that what you order will work for you.

The F1 can be a bit of a problem in stop and go traffic, and with that kind of use, you may have clutch problems. The electrics are far better than the earlier models, but still not perfect.

Everyone complains about the lack of sound of the 360 and compared to a 355 with a Tubi, its a lot quieter. You'll have to decide on which one you prefer.

After you've made a deposit on the car, I would suggest that you see if the dealer will allow you to have the use of a loaner, one with the F1, and perhaps another with the 6 speed.

As for those who'd try to convince you about the 12 cylinders, those cars are essentially a lot less sporting than the Modena.

Hope this helps.

DES, I don't seem to have any other pictures other than the attached of the rear, I've got a whole load from the Enzo launch that I haven't got round to scaling down to 640pixes yet.

Maintenance is much as you'd expect, more expensive that a lot of cars, but trying to skimp is a false economy. There are a few foibles, clutch is sometimes a problem, check engine light sometimes comes on falsely. If you check around on F-chat there are some 360-problems threads. Take a look and either buy an older car and validate that these things have been dealt with, or buy one with a warranty balance (<3yrs old). Note that the early 99 360s are now out of warranty and some are having their first cambelt service. If you're buying an early 360 from a dealer I'd try and negotiate that service into the price.

Good luck hunting!

Yes, black looks amazing.
I'm looking at a F-1, no pink stripes lol!
What is the maintenance like?
What should I be looking for?, are there any inherent problems with any particular years?
Most likely I will pick up a 2000, 2001, or 2002.
Thanks again in advance for any input.

I'm with you Laura... the F50 is the ultimate Ferrari in my eyes... and the 360 is the next closest. The 360 lines from almost every direction mimic the F50 very closely. And those lines can be traced back to some of the great early Ferraris. So, ignore Frank... his world is a bit different than most the rest of us.

I have a 360 Modena F1 coupe and absolutely love it. I will be selling it in the next year or two, replacing it with the only car I can imagine replacing it with... another 360! (Stradale)

If you have specific questions, ask away.

Thank you for the very nice welcome to your forum. I am not really looking for a car to compare to what I already have, I am just looking for something different. I really love the look of the Modena and don't think it looks like any sort of a "Japanese car" hehehe!! Actually that is not true, the Ferrari I really love the F-50!!! That is an amazing car, but my next choice would most likely be the Modena. Although for some reason I think all Ferraris should be red...I want mine in black.
I think I would go through someone privately? At least that is how I prefer to purchase.
Yes that was me in Viper Magazine.
No I haven't taken delivery of the Viper Competition Coupe, the car is not street Legal (it has no VIN#) and cannot be titled for the street, and will be tracked.

Laura,
Have you taken delivery of your Viper competition coupe yet? Will you track it?
If you like top down driving, consider the 360 spyder, very few convertibles can match this car for style. Seems like you already have plenty of coupes to drive.

There is no bad model choice when buying Ferraris, although there may be some bad cars. Get a good PPI.

Hope you join in on the discussions and post some pictures when you get your car.

Rick
IMHO when buying a used Ferrari the price you pay is MUCH less important than the condition and the fact that an authorized dealer gives you a 90day/3000mile warantee. As new ones sell at MSRP this isn't an issue. I have no $ interest in WWOC.
Look at the pics of their tech day. they are the real thing...

I would buy the car private party so you can
see who owned the car. When you buy from a dealer
you have no idea about who owned the car previous.Make sure you do a carfax and get all
the service records.Find a qualified Ferrari
mechanic to go through the car for you.I would
also take the car to a well known body shop
to make sure it had not been in an accident.

Good Luck

"The difference in driving the Viper and a V-8 Ferrari is that you have to get used to operating at a higher rev level"

For example: the power band of the F360/F355 STARTs at the red-line of a Viper (5500)! and goes on towards 8500!

Oh: by the way; welcome to FerrariChat!

Rob, you can only see the "horses" (I assume you are referring to the engine) in the 360 all the time if: 1) the car is parked all the time or ; 2)you are driving in reverse all the time. When driving forward I don't think you can see the engine ? But, I guess most of the gold chain crowd that buys 360s leave them parked in the garage most of the time anyway.

If you're serious, being that you're in the NY area, call 845 425 2600 Wide World of Cars and ask for Mike Mastrangelo. WWOC sells more used Ferrari's than any dealer in the US. If you search you'll find several threads on their latest "Tech day" with photos. I've used them for 31 years. Visit them, drive a few, figure it out slowly. Feel free to mention my name...

The difference in driving the Viper and a V-8 Ferrari is that you have to get used to operating at a higher rev level. I was driving my Viper yesterday in 3rd gear around town and using about 25-3000 revs. In the F-Car you are just barely getting warmed up! Totally different approach and driving style is required!

Frank is on crack again, somebody intervene!

Frank's opinion is one of ..., well, it's the only one.

All Ferraris are great.

I love the 550 equally because of the HP/torque, classic front engine Ferrari looks, and they've depreciated more than the 360, so more go go go for the buck.

I love the 360 equally because of it's more exotic mid engine Ferrari lay out, you can see the horses in it's stable all the time, has a more aggressive stance with the high rear quarters, and it has more characteristics of a racing sports car.

If you're use to the Viper, I think the torque of the 360 will really disappoint you.

Frank - 'scuse me, my apologies; i concur, whole-heartedly. i made that statement after looking in Laura's profile and seeing that she owns a few Vipers; that was an indication that she wants more than a GT car - not that i have anything against the 550/575; awesome cars, but i went on an assumption and i probably shouldn't have...

As far as the 360 looking like "a Japanese car of some sort", well, that's a conversation for another thread and another day... :-)

Welcome to the Chat. For those of you who have Vipers (I have a Viper GTS) Laura is famous over in the Viper community. Since I recently bought my first F-Car Laura, I can tell you that their is absolutely no comparison. I looked at the 550, 360 and 355 and finally settled on the F355 GTS. It has been great! All my toys are great, but if I could have only one, it would be the Ferrari!

Can't go wrong with a 360 ? I beg to differ DES. The 360 is a V8 whereas the 550/575 are V12s. The 550/575 looks like a proper Ferrari whereas the 360 looks like a Japanese car of some sort. And, while the 360 may be selling for more now, after a few years the 360 will be just another industrial V8 Dino where the much rarer 550/575 will become the modern "Daytona like" icon it is.

If you buy a 360, you will never look back at your prior cars the same anymore. I've had 15 or s Corvette's 3 ZR1's, ZO6 (current) and thought Corvette's were the only sports car. The last 16 months has changed my opinion.

Laura, what is your time frame? if you can wait until end or middle of July my spider should be here by then and we can make a deal on my 03 coupe.

Hi, I figured this was the place to come to find, and speak with some Ferrari experts.
I am interested in purchasing my first Ferrari, can you offer me any advice?
I really am leaning towards the Modena coupe.
I would appreciate any input you can offer.
Thanks
