Jim, I don't think I'll be at the July event (not enough track time at that event to make it worthwhile), but I'm one of the organizers of the August FCA Lime Rock Event. You gotta bring something to that one pal. |

First tinted etching primer. (Bottom 2 photos) Then put on base/sanding coat... (Hanging Panels) Look at surfaces in etching primer shot. Note how you can still see traces of welds and hammer marks. This is correct these bodies were hammered not rolled. Base/coat/final coat will hide these but faint traces will remain.

Jim G Great photos, restoring a classic has to be the ultimate auto indulgance.....from the research, to parts sourcing, to the rebirth of a gem.....what a great experience!!! Jim S, I'm not even into bikes, but I caught an episode of the program where they beat out a fender and sprayed it with that INCREDIBLY expensive pearlescent paint. True artists |

Arlie I think you're mixing up a few things. The P4 both coupe and spyder had Alum bodies except for the doors which were fiberglass. When Ferrari converted 2 of the P4's to CanAm cars (350 Can Am) more of the car became fiberglass. I'm not sure at what point Ferrari began making fiberglass in house. (Wayne/Gerald?) When Piper bought the P4 remains that eventually became my car he built up a car that used a fiberglass nose and tail but retained Alum sills and belly. Piper never fit the Alum Coupe body I'm now fitting. NOS Cigaro/Allagretti. My car raced with this fiberglass body (Piper) from 67-2000. Before that it raced with an Alum body which burnt up at LeMans 67. In 67 the MK-IV had a fiberglass body as did the Lola T-70. One of the Bizzarini's had a fiberglass body as well as Bizzarini owed $ to his alum body builder and the body maker withheld the body so in able to make LeMans Bizzarini used fiberglass. The Corvettes that raced at LeMans also used fiberglass as did the Chaparals. I think some Porsche racers were fiberglass and some were alum. Best Jim |

James, I've got a Lemans question in general. You mentioned early on that the aluminum body was never installed on your car because it used a fiberglass body during its racing heyday. Presumably because of fiberglass being easier and quicker to repair during racing mishaps. Is that correct? If so, how many other cars of the classic Lemans/P4 era ALSO used fiberglass bodies? Did any others go the 'glass body route? If so, who actually made the bodies? Did Ferrari make the P4 fiberglass body, or some outside racing speciality house?

James, Absolutely great!!!! Must be very rewarding to see the project get along so nicely and steadily. Nice to see that there are still people who can actually restore such a car in the "old fashioned way"! Con saluti cordialissimi, Jens Haller |

Greg of GS Customs who is beating the headlight cover mold is the best painter I've come accross. He painted my Lola and he's painting my P4. John Hajdak jr. is of Metalcraft is the one who fit the NOS coupe body. IMHO it doesn't get better than this.

Jim, Your attention to detail and commitment to original methods is staggering! But how did you find people that still had the talent to do this project "old school way"....this gentlemen on the stump looks very young............is this apparently not a lost art? |

James, I have to say I really admire you for doing this project and especially in the 'old world' way. The P4 is my all-time favourite car. I've been collecting P4 models, vintage pics (I have a couple of large French press pics of a P4 being worked on back in 1967 I think), videos, etc whenever the opportunity arises. Keep up the fantastic work, I've been following your progress with much anticipation! |

Des Jim I've really made a great effort to restore this car using the techniques that were used when it was originally built. If you look at pics of Cigaro pounding out the original panels at Allagretti's you'll see many a tree stump being used with a forming bag and a mallet. Those are body panels with a first/sanding coat of zinc cromate primer. As we speak the first coats of Blood Red Rossa Corsa are going on. Best Jim |

The painting begins. Headlight cover molds being made. Zinc Cromate primer, first dusting coat of red. Note surface of nose. Huge amount of prep results in a surface that needs no filler. (Bondo)
