I love my 996. I just traded in my 355 spyder for a 360 spyder yesterday...with the intention of getting rid of the 996. But the 996 is a smaller package. My 355 was even tighter, but the interior bugged me. As well as wondering if I should just "jump in and drive" it all the time. Yeesh... I know people think the 996 lacks soul. But I don't agree. It's pretty hep.

I think the question being asked is a good one. Really guys, how many super cars can the world absorb? Ive now been asked 3 times if I want to put a deposit down on the Porsche GT: each time the money gets a little bit less. In the pedestrian car department, the world overcapacity is now estimated to be in the 10's of millions. All one has to do is look at how the used car market for the Porsches, Lambos, Maserati's, etc. have dropped to realize that the market's capacity is flattening out. That's bad for the car companies but good for us. The best will survive (but maybe not prosper as much as they have), improve their product and we reap the benefits.

Kenneth, with the Bentley GT being a coupe, maybe it's not a direct competitor to the Spider, but the Modena. Also, later this year, we will see the Mercedes CL65 AMG... Bi Turbo V12 - You know who they're after. |

James, What a perceptive post. Mind if I also add Bentley GT to your wonderful list?

I think the question is a bit more insidious. These cars are different but at some point there's going to be blood on the floor. The production plans of Lambo, F, Maser,P, Aston, FordGT,Bug,Mercedes,Jag,S7,Pagnoni,Stryker,B2,etc,etc are going to IMHO cause huge loses for some of these co's. The PAG: Lincoln,Aston,Volvo, Range Rover, Jag lost 88 million last year. If you take the upscale BMW,Mercedes,VW,Audi, etc. it get worse. This particular P car has different appeal than a 360 but the baby lambo, backed by VW has the 360 dead in it's sites. |

The Porsche experience is certainly no comparison to that of a Ferrari. The two makes of cars are different breeds, and for completely different needs. One is for pragmatic daily runs, the other is for dramatic performing arts. |

I think that P car owners and F car owners are different breeds. I have owned two Porsches and lovede them until I finally drove a Ferrari. IT's not the same and either gets you or not. The build feels totally different.. the Pcar is more Tank like and solid the Ferrari feels more fluid. Ergonomics are TOTALLY different. When I took my Mondial to a friends house they sat in it and then said " gee I thought it would be more Lux on the interior". Never had that kind of comment aobut the Porsche. I would not think that any model from either maker would steal many sales from the other. |

Not in a million years. Soon you are with F-cars, it is hard to go back. You can give this one to your spouse as daily driver |

>>For the 2005 model year Porsche will be changing the front end of the current 911 to look more like the car we love.<< About friggin' time! After two models I think it's too late. The current one will probably be the last Porsche I buy. Not because of the mechanicals or performance, I think it's fantastic. But these model changes every 3-5 years is really starting to piss me off. I might as well just get an old 930 as well as a 911 from the 2.7 days and be done with this. Cheers |

FWIW.... For the 2005 model year Porsche will be changing the front end of the current 911 to look more like the car we love. Specifically, round headlights will be re-introduced (similiar to 993 style) and there will be no Boxster visual cues like the current car that is basically a Boxster from the seats forward.

Just before I traded my 996 cab for a 355 spider, somebody on this board said "you will have a thousand times more fun with the Ferrari". They were right. |

No doubt it'll be good for the money (best value at those dollars I can think of is the SL55), but it's still in a different league. Exact same consideration with 996TT vs. 360 Coupe - two radically different cars. Personally, I wouldn't want one. The turtle-look back end, boxster front and the god-awful interior (subjective, I know) aren't for me. --Dan |

Having owned a C4 Cab and now a Turbo, I don't think I'd get a Turbo Cab at all. Cheers |

I am presently debating whether to buy the TT Cab. I am #1 at my dealer for the TT Cab. My issues with the Cab. deal with late in the model production and the look alike C4S Cab not to mention all the other look alike Porsches including the Boxster. I wish I had a dollar for the number of times people asked me whether I like the Boxster (I owned a 996 Cab.) Ferrari understands Exclusivity and Passion. Porsche Performance for Profit. I prefer the former. BTW I peg the price of the TT Cab. close to $130,000.

it is not all that much cheaper. tricked out with the X50 power package i think it'll sticker around $155K or so in the US. when i originally bought my 996TT what i really wanted was a 996TT Cab, but alas. fwiw, as a previous owner of a 996 C2 Cab and a 996TT, i wouldn't imagine trading my F355 Spider for a 996TT Cab. doody. |

I think the availability of buying a turbo cab will tempt some people. Waiting 3 to four years for a new spider isn't the greatest. I'm glad I bought a 355 spider while waiting for a new spider. Having owned a 994 C4 cab, the 996 turbo cab will be a great car for the money, but it will never be a Ferrari. |

Hi, I recently came across this picture of a 996 turbo cabriolet taken outside the Porsche factory. Someone on a Porsche board had picked up his 996 in Germany and said there's a whole assembly line of turbo cabs in production already (the C4S cab was announced by Porsche AG, but the turbo cab has not been publicized yet). There was a picture taken for proof, which I have attached. Do you think this car will have the ability to snare spi(y)der sales? While it's probably not the same visceral experience of an F-car, it is cheaper and certainly offers formidable performance.. Sorry if the post seems a bit "off-topic," but I hope it serves of some interest. At any rate, I don't think any major car mags have published photos of production 996TT cabs yet. Of course, given the choice without consideration of price, I would still take a 360 spider...
