I say use it or lose it. Drive on my friend. It is the only thing Enzo would have you do. I drive mine all the time-it too has a few nicks, but how could anyone park these machines?? They are designed to be driven!!!! Enjoy the drive before you're six feet under & too late!! |

I can be guaranteed a huge rock chip every time I go above 100. And since I see that speed at least 3 or four times every time I drive the car, well, you get the picture. The reason you have paint is to save the metal, yes -- from rock damage and oxidation, not as a show piece. So when you see a rock chip you know the paint was doing one of the jobs it was designed for. Keep driving dude..... |

I agree. Drive the damn thing. Mario, I have more rock chips than I can count- at least 30. My car got 98 points at Cavallino this year. Dont worry about it. |

But again, anyone shouting "Drive it" or "They're meant to be driven!" is preaching to the choir on this board. We are enthusiasts, even the collectors and concourse folks among us. I sense that there is a huge pool of owners out there who think of their 246 Dino or 250 GTO no differently than they think of their stock portfolio, inanimate and appreciating, or "liquidated". What got me thinking this way is I noticed in the FCA bulletin after the big meeting this year in Sebring that the winner of one of the categories (Michael Shaad...246 Dino) lives in my town (Knoxville)! And after talking Fcar BS for 8 months, I've never heard of the guy. Obviously a different kind of owner. And very prevalent, though quieter than the "drive it!" type of owner, which I am. I always hated to see guitars used as decoration, too, even in a Hard Rock. Should be played. And don't be beating them against your amps, either. Give it to someone who'll appreciate it, then beat your mike stand into the amps it you want. |

Rock chips are inevitable, so tell that guy to get bent. With my F-car, and EVERY sports car that I have owned, I have always stayed WAY behind or entirely away from trucks. Stick your hand out of the window going down the freeway anywhere near an 18 wheeler and you will soon realize how the front end of your car is being sandblasted by the truck. Seems silly, but I just hang all the way back in traffic or better yet just pass them. So far so good. 1,500 miles after the front end repaint and not even one chip! |

It seems as if you breathe on Ferrari paint wrong it chips I just spent quite a bit on paintwork for my car to fix some chips, I had just a few chips but many micro tiny pits all over, my car is perfect now so I ordered a 9 piece invincashield (3m Film) kit. |

The nice thing about my 31 year old Lotus is that rock chips are the LEAST of my worries. It starts, drives great and stops. That's 99% of the battle. |

There are Ferrari drivers, and Ferrari museum curators. The question is which one are you? I've got 36k on mine. I prefer the drivers myself. Art |

Bart, you're not alone. My 550 has a huge amount of stone chips & dings in the front......and this is AFTER the front end cap I had repainted for this very reason 18 months ago! It is also a 2000 model, and I have put 17,000 miles on it so far, so go figure. Ferraris are meant to be driven. |

Bart, paint chips are okay. A dirty car is okay. Worn seats are okay. However... ...dashboard leather pulling up exposing the yellow padding and staples is NOT OKAY :D <snickering>

>>After looking at my little thing, they asked me when I was going to repaint the beast.<< The way many people pump themselves up to their self appointed pedestal is by putting others down. Simply the age old technique of reminding about class distinctions. Very common. We are all left with two simple choices when acosted by the Class Definers, buy into their bullshit or laugh at them. |

I agree drive the thing and be damned with any critics, they are our cars and we can do as we like with them,to the next critic say "you pay to get it fixed" Best regards Dave McGuire |

Dont worry B, Spending your time trying to keep a car perfect takes away from the time spent enjoying what it can do. Like character lines or grey hairs, there is s a memorable story behind all of them. I'll take mechanics over cosmetics any day. DJS. |

>> It is driven and driven often. << Sure sounds like a Ferrari Driving Club spokesperson to me! "We Drive and Drive often" Bart - I salute you for driving the heck out of your 550. More owners should be like you... perhaps not as fast, but more owners should learn to use their cars as they were meant to be used... TO BE DRIVEN!! Forza Ferrari! |

Bart, I'm with Tyler - rock on brotha (and I'm sending this from 12h time diff from CA on a dialup! so that should tell you how much I approve)... Drive it, abuse it, enjoy it. If it breaks, fix it. I am in the same boat as you, windshield has been peppered, etc. Front looks sharp, but the chips are there. I say be proud of them! (Just think of Jim's picture after Daytona...) --Dan |

I think most people don't drive they're F- cars because they are worried about depreciation. They figure the more miles they put on the less it is worth. The only people who drive they're F-cars are the one's who can really afford it. |

Bart, I want to be the first to congratulate you on your stance. You are NOT alone, my friend. The damn things are cars, plain and simple. Drive them, use them, extract every ounce of meaning and enjoyment you can from whatever type of use pleases you. Paint them when YOU feel they need it. |

Bart I think you gave them the right reaction. It has bothered me that my F-car has approximately 12 rock chips (they have been touched up) and I'm going to exhibit it at Concorso next Friday. But, I'm assuming there will be other Daily Drivers on exhibit that are not perfect. I bought the car to drive it..sounds like you did too. They look great in the garage, but better on the road. |

I just left a place which has many Ferraris. After looking at my little thing, they asked me when I was going to repaint the beast. I asked "Why? They said "Look at the front end. It has many rock chips. It looks like a shotgun was used on it." I said, "OK. So what? I drive it. Going fast in the desert does do some damage. If I repaint it, it will get more chips in it. The only time anyone can see the front is when it is parked. If I am driving it, not many will see the front of my car." They did not understand I am not interested in spending many thousands of dollars just to make it look new. My car is not new. It is driven and driven often. I guess I should rip off the yellow buttons on the wheels, the Ferrari badge on the hood, and the name on the trunk. That way I will not embarrass the Ferrari non-driving owners. My thing is NOT a museum piece. I care not for shows. What I care about is driving it. I feel sorry for those who thing my beast is for show and not go. I should be ban from driving it. I hope to meet them on the freeway with my toy. PS: My windshield is about to be replace. My nice insurance agent will pay for it. It will be a Ferrari windshield. This is for safety reasons. |
