Martin/Sean -- I think many pre-'80 cars did get an "engine family + serial number" VIN, but IME there's no solid rule for that convention (my ex-'78's VIN was "model + serial number" -- 308GTS25375). |

Actually, it's a wet sump steel car. One of the early ones made in November 1976. (yes, I'm sure it's steel). The "VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION" plate under the bonnet says Engine Family Identification F106 A Thanks |

Your car should be F106??0???? Now remember the 1976 are fiberglass models and there are US deliveries which have a different engine than the Eur deliveries. Drysump vs wetsump. So you can find two different engine codes in the same year 308s in 1976 and some 1977. Would lve to give you the engine number of my 308GTB US delivery Fiberglass I had but those papers are already in storage! |

1976 will not have the ZFF part. That did not come till 1980. Your Vin will be the engine type plus the 5 digit serial number on the car.

Sean -- you can't (they didn't have standardized US 17-digit VINs before 1980). |

How can I determine the entire VIN number from a 1976 308 GTB? I found some VIN stuff at ferrariclub.com, but I'm missing some info. so far I've got the following...ZFFGA03A??020437 the ?? are supposed to designate the year, but the ferrariclub reference does not go back that far year wise. |
