You're car is a bad A$$ mut. I think originality is overrated anyway. I keep my car in pretty much original up to now, but Borla exhaust, some of Nick's stuff, etc is gonna have to be done. I'll keep the original stuff, but I would like to change some things around to make it a better car, rather than 1985 technology. I'm never gonna sell my car anyway.

Ha Ha Ha, Hey Bret, Is my car A "Mut" because NORWOOD changed all of the engine management systems and added a turbo?
I personally like the looks of stock 308's They are very sharp and angular. The 288 is one bad a-- machine, but the rounded fenders seem like an afterthought to cover the required fatties.

We were more talking about people trying to pass it off as a 288, I agree with what you said in that if you passed it off as a 308 with aerodynamic work done then it would be cool. I would say you would be morally obligated to use those aerodynamic advantages too.

It doesn't matter what other people think of your car, if you like it...does it? I think (and know)
that as long as the conversion is done properly, everything fits perfect, and the paint job looks awesome people will like your car. It is still a Ferrari, just because you put some fiberglass parts on it does not make it a fiero...does it?
Don't forget they made a fiberglass 308, allot of people love those. As far as the fiberglass quality of the 288 GTO parts you purchase, the resins used for fiberglass now are better than what they used back then. Have you ever seen the quality of the stock Ferrari 348 front bumper, junk as far as fiberglass quality is concerned. I guarantee that the "fake" 288 GTO parts will be of higher quality. (as long as the parts are hand laid fiberglass with a tooling resin).
I wouldn't worry what other people think of me or my car. "Rescue" a 308 (one that needs paint job etc..) and have some fun. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Bret, you have hit on what I was really trying to get at in my question - as a street car are they precieved as "fake" GTO's or "modified" 308's? I love my GTSi but I have been toying with the idea of getting a second car (a GTB with the rebody) as somewhat of a more user friendly driver. Something for longer trips - less leaking, can keep the windows up with the air on so you don't get stuck somewhere when your windows decide not to come up again, that sort of stuff. I like the body style and as a track car I don't see a problem but I just wanted to know what people thought of them as sort of being a "copy" of another car.

Most of them don't extend the chassis, they just simple attach 288 style panels that are the sizes of 308 panels. I think they're kind of cool for a track car too, actually I was thinking about getting one a couple months ago for that purpose, but for a street car I think they're pretty much gay. Just weird to have a fake 288 for the street, like you said about passing it off, but for the track the aerodynamic advantages are a must. For a street car that you are gonna drive like you stole, in the middle of the night at ridiculously excessive speeds I think the 288 rebodies would be good for this also. And since it's already a mut, you could modify engine, suspension, everything with no regard for originality which is kind of cool.

A GTO rebodied 308 can be found for about $70-80k if it has the actual rear frame and wheelbase changes and the twin turbo. Many of these are faster than the original 288. Norwood does a really good job with these conversions for about $130k.

For $70-130k I would rather buy an original Ferrari. However, my next car will probably be a 308 for club racing and SCCA GT-2 rules allow you to use any Ferrari looking body (fiberglass) as long as you have the original 308 carb engine. I would get called in to the F.P.S. if I started rubbing fenders with an original body. The fiberglass would be cheaper and easier to repair, plus, as everyone knows, the 288 GTO is one of the best looking designs out of Pininfarina.

Umm...yes, the longitudinal engine in the GTO was not mentioned in my previous post (everyone knows the difference already, right?). Sorry, if I wasn't explicit enough.

I think there are GTO body kits without the need for chassis stretch.

I thought the 288GTO had a longitudinal engine -- one of the reasons for the increased wheelbase...

You're probably talking about aftermarket rebody kits. As far as I know, Ferrari never rebody 308s in 288GTO panels. GTOs may look like a 308 and share some components but they are very different. Also, to do an accurate rebody, the 308 chassis have to be stretched 4 inches to match the GTO's wheelbase.

I have no problems with 308s with 288GTO panels when they're used in racing applications (wider fenders to cover wider wheels and slicks). The problem is that some people might be trying to pass a rebodied car as the real 288GTO.

Was just wondering how everybody felt about 308's that had been rebodied to the 288 GTO? Ferrari has a long history of using one chassis and clothing it with many bodystyles, but somehow this has a different feel to it. Anybody else have that feeling or is it just me?
