Hey Heath ole' buddy, Call Nick at 360-332-7779 He will let you know how much you need to take out of your piggy bank to buy a set of test pipes. If your going to buy them, Nick is the guy to deal with. MAGOO

HEATH, I also checked with the service mgr. at Ferrari of Atlanta. He said that, less, unequal exhaust pressure on the pass. side was normal, especially on the 308 models. He directed my attention to the owners manual where it shows the supply pipes to the pass. side of the muffler makes more tight bends. He also said that owners who had their cars for a long time will come in and complain about it thinking something is wrong. However a cat can break loose inside and cause the same effect. So if in doubt remove the cats and check them along with the muffler. MAGOO

Hey, if any of you guys are interested, Nick now carries TEST PIPES for the older 70's 308's. MAGOO

John C. -- I'd agree with you that the practical reasons for going to the test pipes(s) are: 1)lowering the underbonnet/exhaust temperatures {which also "preserves" the cat(s) for later reinstallation} and 2) the more-aggresive acoustics -- a massive HP gain just isn't in the cards.
In a way, the more HP you've got stock, the less there is to be gained -- i.e., you'd notice a 5 HP increase a lot more on a 205 HP US carbed 308 than on your 328. I just replaced the precats on my TR with test pipes, and I sure like being able to hear the Tubi exhaust better now below 4K RPM.

STEVE
I CHECKED WITH FERRARI ATL. ON MODELS WITH ONE CAT CONV. THERE WILL BE UNEQUAL EXHAUST FLOW.

Steve,
Thanks for the clarification on carbed 308's. Learn something new every day. Yes, I meant at idle/low rpm. Although I can't really feel a noticeable difference without the cat (even at the track). It sounds a bit healthier/louder than with the cat and I got to believe is running cooler as well.

John C.,

Some models (e.g., US carbed 308s) have two cat converters (and therefore require two test pipes) while other models only have one cat (1 test pipe required). However, even on the models with two cats (and therefore) two muffler inlets, I'm not sure that the muffler internals are "symmetric" -- therefore, the flow from the two muffler outlets may not be equal even if all is OK.
You say there is "no difference in pressure from before" but if you mean the flow out of the muffler outlets at idle is about the same this is to be expected -- if there is a real benefit from an exhaust modification it would be apparent only at higher RPMs/loads.

I have an 86 328 with "unequal" exhaust pressure at start up and idle. I have changed to a "test pipe" and there is no difference in pressure from before. I think the reason for the uneven pressure at low rpm as to do with the way the exhaust is routed on cars with a single inlet pipe to the muffler (cat systems vs. non cat systems) with two inlets.
I am also confused about an earlier comment requiring 2 test pipes??

Anyone interested in a bypass for 328's I made my own. And can make them relatively cheaply. All stainless.Respond if you're interested. Can make many items...have full hi-tech machine shop.

Nick S. (Posts allot here) sells them and they have had some positive comments on this chat. The link is:

I am going to order a pair as soon as I get a new exhaust. Should be soon. If you order a pair of these, post how the install went.

Trent
Can you forward any info on where to obtain the Cat test pipes.
Best Regards

I have a 81 308GTBi and it also has unequal air flow from the mufflers. The driver side is about 1/4 what the passenger side pipe has.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am probably going to buy those $250 Cat "test" Pipes.

If you have unequal pressure, there is stuff blocking in the exhaust system. That stuff is what is inside the cats. Usualy a honeycomb structure or a sponge-like structure. These structures are covered in rare earth metals (like palladium, rubidium, etc...). When the hot exhaust gas flows over the surface of these metals A CATALYTIC reaction occurs and the exhaust gas turns into less-harmful gases, reducing pollution. Over time, from that heat and vibrations, the structures break-up and dislodge and block up exhaust piping, restricting flow. If you remove the muffler and hear rattling noises, thats crud from the cats.

Can any body educate me on Kat converters. I have unequal pressure comming out the exhaust. The other day I read a discussion about bypass pipes what is involved an were can they be obtained.after installation how about the slow down light? Is this an easy installation. what are the pros and cons. The car in question is an 84 Mondial Cab.
